In the police station.
Captain Li took out two evidence bags and placed them in front of Ji Linting.
In one of the bags was my old cell phone that I had thrown in the alley, with traces of blood on it.
The other was the small cloth bag containing my ashes, which was now covered in mud.
Captain Li pointed at the two items and looked directly at Ji Linting. "We found these in the blocked sewer. We've hired professionals to repair and boot up the phone. Did you find out the victim's last call was to you?"
"What did she say to you then?"
Ji Linting stammered, as if he had just remembered the plea for help I had asked him the last time I called him. After a long pause, he answered truthfully and with difficulty, "She...she said there seemed to be someone behind her...someone chasing her with a knife!"
Captain Li paused tapping his hand on the table, his expression suddenly serious. "Then why didn't you go over there later? Why didn't you call the police?"
Ji Linting opened his mouth, but felt as if there were thousands of needles stuck in his throat, leaving him speechless.
But Captain Li did not ask too many questions.
Their focus now is to find my body so they can identify the murderer.
And their first suspect was Ji Linting.
But now they have no direct evidence to prove that Ji Linting killed me, so they want to find some clues through interrogation.
But the sadness in Ji Linting's eyes didn't seem fake. At this moment, he grabbed Captain Li's hand with red eyes and asked nervously over and over again, "She's not dead, right? If we haven't found her body, then everything is fine, right?"
Captain Li remained skeptical despite his out-of-control appearance.
He said that death could not be determined until the body was found, and only then did he calm down the man who seemed to be in a state of collapse.
Then he turned on the computer and played the surveillance video not far from the alley where the incident happened for Ji Linting to see.
It clearly records the entire process of me being beaten, dragged and thrown into the alley by his group of good neighbors.
As the footage played, Captain Li's expression grew increasingly serious. "So, Dr. Ji, did you instruct your neighbor to throw the victim into the alley, leading to her death?"
Captain Li spoke loudly, and anyone with normal hearing could hear it.
But at this moment, Ji Linting stared at the picture on the computer screen with his eyes wide open, his face full of horror.
He originally thought that I had gone to the neighborhood to cause trouble, causing Qiao Zhixian to suffer injustice and be pointed at by the neighbors.
But now it seems that I was the one being bullied by those neighbors and became a rat crossing the street.
For a moment, he felt as if his heart was being tortured, and the pain was so severe that he could hardly breathe.
In just a moment, his tears fell.
He stared with his eyes wide open in a self-deprecating manner, staring at the scene of me being grabbed by the hair and arms and thrown into a dark alley by a group of people.
Suddenly, his blurry and confused eyes froze, his pupils trembled, and his lips turned pale as if he had seen some horrifying scene.
Captain Li's hawk-like gaze captured the change in his expression and asked suspiciously, "What happened?"
The next second, Ji Linting stood up from his chair, pointed at the computer screen with trembling fingers and shouted loudly, "Pause! Pause!"
Captain Li frowned, but still helped him pause the video.
As the surveillance footage paused, the trembling in Ji Linting's hands instantly spread throughout his body, and even the flesh on his face began to tremble.
Because he saw clearly that the white dress I was wearing in the surveillance video was exactly the same as the dress worn by the woman he cruelly cut open the liver in the operating room last night!
A terrible idea suddenly emerged in his mind.
"No, no!"
He yelled at the top of his lungs, as if the louder he yelled, the less likely he was to kill me.
The heartache was overwhelming, and he was like a fish stranded on the shore, breathing in the fresh air but feeling suffocated.
There was a taste of rust in his throat, and the next moment after he shouted, a mouthful of blood spurted out of his mouth, and even he himself was shocked in disbelief.
He never knew he would react so strongly to my death.
In the end, I collapsed to the ground holding my little cloth bag on the table and cried loudly for no apparent reason.
I once told him that the small cloth bag embroidered with the word "wish" was a gift from him before he lost his memory. It is said that the words on it were also embroidered by him himself.
He didn't expect that I still have this little cloth bag today.
The thought that he might have killed me with his own hands and dissected my body made him feel as if his whole heart was being cut out alive.
After being questioned, he, as my former spouse, took my belongings and hurried home.
As soon as he entered the house, he saw Qiao Zhixian scolding Ji Xing for not doing housework well. He was so angry that he went up and slapped Qiao Zhixian in the face.
There was a crisp "pop" sound, followed by Ji Linting's furious roar, "Where did you put her body? Did you know that she was the one who donated the liver and let her die on purpose?"
Finally, he shook Qiao Zhixian's shoulders frantically, as if he wanted to crush her shoulders.
"Where did you bury her?"
Qiao Zhixian was so frightened by his violent shaking that the color drained away from her face. Knowing that her secret was exposed, she stammered and told him the specific address.
At that time, my soul was sadly watching my son who had spoken harshly to me being obedient in front of his stepmother. All I could think about was the cute and obedient appearance of my youngest son Chenchen.
Just then, I saw Ji Linting coming back with my small cloth bag, and I excitedly wanted to grab it.
There was still a glass bottle containing Chenchen's ashes inside, and I didn't know if it was broken.
But no matter how I, a ghost, jump around, how can I snatch anything from the hands of a living person?
