Chapter 1812 We Ran Away
Just as I was feeling sentimental, my left hand was suddenly grabbed.
Shu Yu turned her head and heard Meng Yunzheng whisper, "I'll take you to set off fireworks later. I brought them back from the prefectural city for you."
Shu Yu couldn't help but laugh, "I'm not a three-year-old child."
"It's too dangerous for a three-year-old to play like this. Someone like you is just right."
Shu Yu almost choked on the water she had just drunk, and glared at him as she turned around. Meng Yunzheng's lips curled up as he handed her the handkerchief, then paused and said, "There won't be much to do in the prefectural city after the New Year. With Qi Lie here, I can free up my hands. Then, we'll sneak back to Dong'an Prefecture."
"Why do you have to do it secretly?"
Meng Yunzheng sighed, "Lord Qi is eager for someone to share his official duties here. Even if we want to leave openly, he has to be willing to let us go."
If Qi Lie weren't afraid that Meng Yunzheng would quit if he were too heartless, he would have wanted to keep Meng Yunzheng in the prefectural city during the New Year holidays.
Shu Yu thought of Qi Lie, who couldn't return to Beijing for the New Year, and nodded in deep sympathy.
After the New Year's Eve dinner, Meng Yunzheng indeed brought out all sorts of fireworks and let everyone share them to set off.
The youngest member of the Meng family is Meng Han, and the little girl is especially happy this year. In previous years, her mother would invite her uncle's family over to make the house more lively. Her uncle's little cousin is a real show-off, and the entire Meng family is his domain, where he gets whatever he wants.
If she doesn't give in, she'll be lectured by her uncle, aunt, and mother, as if she, a grown woman, is arguing with a child. She won't be able to have a peaceful New Year.
This year is different. With her cousin and her sister Shuyu by her side, this is the Lunar New Year's Eve that Meng Han has been dreaming of.
She used to play with Shuyu, knowing that on such a day of reunion, Shuyu must miss her family very much.
The festivities lasted until very late, and the crackling of firecrackers could still be heard throughout the night.
The noise continued until dawn before it subsided slightly. Shu Yu changed into new clothes and got up to wash and dress.
On the first day of the Lunar New Year, with nothing much to do, Shu Yu decided to go for a stroll.
Unexpectedly, as soon as I stepped out of the room, Meng Yunzheng was already waiting there, holding a red envelope in his hand. "Happy New Year."
"Happy New Year." Shu Yu accepted it without hesitation, smiling as she squeezed it. Inside were probably silver notes, probably at least ten taels.
She thought one red envelope would be enough, but to her surprise, Meng Pei and Uncle Meng also gave her one during breakfast.
Shu Yu immediately felt embarrassed. "I turned 18 two years ago, why are you still giving me a red envelope?"
“In our hearts, no matter how old you are, you’re still a junior, a child. It doesn’t really matter whether you’ve reached the coming-of-age ceremony or not,” Meng Pei said cheerfully. “Just accept it. It’s not a big red envelope. It’s just for the New Year, a small token of our appreciation.”
Tao also offered a rare word of encouragement, saying, "Yes, and this is your first time in the Meng family. You haven't been able to go back to reunite with your parents because of us. This red envelope is a token of our appreciation."
Shu Yu was not one to mince words, and immediately accepted it without hesitation.
Not only her, but also Meng Yunzheng, Meng Han, and Meng Qi, who are not married, have them.
After leaving the flower hall, Meng Han opened her red envelope and was shocked to see that there were five taels of silver inside. Her eyes nearly popped out of their sockets.
She whispered to Shuyu, "In previous years, my brother and I didn't even get this much New Year's money combined."
