Chapter 491 Shu Yu's Treatment
Shu Yu had no idea that the moment she raised her head at the city gate that day, it would lead to this series of events. She also never expected that her family, worried about her, would actually mobilize the entire family to follow her.
After the exiled group left Dong'an Prefecture, the road became difficult to travel.
Although it was an official road, the surface was smooth and wide. However, the heavy shackles on their feet severely slowed them down.
But the escorting officials kept urging them on, showing no mercy whatsoever.
This made the Shu family members, who originally wanted to keep an eye on Shu Yu and find an opportunity to cause her trouble, lose all interest and only care about getting on their way.
Of all the people, Shu Yu was the most at ease.
The handcuffs on her hands felt light, and although the shackles on her feet had some weight, she noticed that they were still much lighter than those on others.
By noon, the officials were tired from walking, so they found a shady place to rest.
The entire Shu family was exhausted and sat motionless on the ground. Shu Yu, however, still had time to look around until a hand appeared before her.
She looked up and saw that it was the leading officer, so she immediately stood up.
The officer said to her expressionlessly, "Here's your rations. Take them and eat them first. I promised your family, and I will definitely keep my word. Eat up. These steamed buns are cold, but you'll have to make do with them. We'll have something hot to eat when we have a fire tonight."
Shu Yu accepted it. "Thank you."
The leading officer waved his hand and returned to his seat.
Other officials were also given rations, but the rest of the Shu family received dry, coarse flour buns or tasteless, hard biscuits.
The amount was very small, after all, the people who were exiled were all given a ration of only eight ounces of food per person per day, and even less for those under fifteen. As long as they were kept from starving, that was enough; there were no better conditions available.
Shu Yu was only fourteen years old, but she had two white steamed buns in her hand and a water bag next to her, just like the officials and constables.
The Shu family members were indignant and glared at her angrily once again.
But they dared not say anything, since the leading officer had made it very clear that they were being treated specially because the couple had given them money.
At this moment, the old lady of the Shu family even began to resent her two married daughters. Because of the Shu family's connections, they had married well in their early years and were now the heads of the household.
Even a tiny bit of money slipping through their fingers could easily amount to five taels of silver, or even fifty taels. If they gave them a little, their journey to exile wouldn't have been so difficult.
However, after the Shu family's incident, they tried their best to sever ties with the Shu family and didn't even visit their mother in prison.
Shu Yu felt the bright, burning, jealous gaze, but she didn't care and continued eating her steamed bun.
This steamed bun... actually has a sweet taste.
To be honest, although she went through imprisonment and exile, her food expenses these past few days seem to have been quite good.
After eating and resting for a while, the officials urged them to continue their journey.
As evening approached, the group finally arrived at the post station.
The post station was located outside the city, and apart from this post station, there was practically no other human habitation in the vicinity.
The officials seemed to be in good spirits, urging the group to go inside.
The dinner was indeed better, but of course, the Shu family ate the same food as at noon.
