Chapter 709 Big Tiger Becomes Someone Else's Tutor
The old lady put down the chicken feed in her hand, stepped back into the fence, and touched the chicken's rear end. Still, no eggs were laid, and she was somewhat disappointed.
Hearing Shu Yu's words, she washed her hands before smiling and saying, "Those two went to the Zhang family."
"To the Zhang family?"
"Yes, Da Hu has gone to be someone's tutor."
Shu Yu was filled with questions, "Are you sure?"
The old lady wiped her hands and said cheerfully, "It was that boy from the Zhang family who came to our door. He knew that Da Hu could read and write, so he thought he could teach them when he had some free time."
Shu Yu looked up at the sky. A child who had only been studying in school for less than two months was now acting as a teacher. It all seemed so fantastical.
The old lady said, "There are actually literate people in Zhengdao Village. Take the Shu family for example, they all come from wealthy families. But they all have to work, so if they wanted to teach, they would need the time and freedom. Although the Zhang family no longer needs to work in the wasteland, they still don't have the means to send their children to school."
“The Zhang family members can’t take the imperial examinations anyway, but if they can learn some characters, it will be easier for them to find a job in the future. Although Da Hu didn’t attend school for long, he is hardworking and diligent. In addition, with you and Young Master Meng teaching him from time to time, he already knows a lot of characters, more than those students who have attended school for a year or two.”
"I heard from Da Hu that when Young Master Meng came last time, he specially taught him some special learning method. Da Hu followed along and has made rapid progress these past two days, which makes him incredibly proud. Now, he's even confidently going off to be a teacher."
Shu Yu was overjoyed. "This is a good thing. Da Hu used to lack confidence in himself."
The old lady nodded, "Yes, we should all thank Young Master Meng, shouldn't we?"
Shu Yu, “…” felt that the old lady’s words were strange, as if they had a hidden meaning.
She coughed lightly. "Since they're not here, then I'll go wash my clothes by the river."
Shu Yu looked around. She had originally intended to fetch water and gather firewood, but the water tank was still full, and the firewood was piled up in a corner. The chickens had been fed, and the newly planted vegetables had been watered.
Looking around, the only thing that hadn't been washed was the basin of clothes under the eaves.
The old lady probably left it there because she saw that she was still sleeping at home and didn't feel comfortable leaving.
After Shu Yu finished speaking, before the old lady could refuse, she had already picked up the wooden basin containing the clothes and run away.
"Hey, you kid, you just woke up, why don't you eat something? You don't need those clothes."
The old lady chased after her, but her legs were not as nimble as Shu Yu's, and she disappeared in no time.
The old lady sighed. Fortunately, she didn't have many clothes, so she should be back soon.
She went back to the kitchen and decided to make lunch first.
However, by the time she had finished preparing the meal, Shu Yu still hadn't returned.
The old lady started to get anxious. How could washing clothes take so long? Could something have happened?
As she hesitated whether to go out and look for him, she saw a familiar figure walking towards her from not far away.
Shu Yu supported the wooden basin containing the clothes with her left hand on her waist, and carried a small basket with her right hand.
There seemed to be something inside the small basket; it looked quite heavy.
The old lady let out a long sigh of relief and quickly walked a few steps to greet her. "Why did you take so long to wash? Where did this basket come from, and what's in it?"
