Chapter 401 The Gossipy Villagers
Old Master Yuan's face instantly turned ugly, and the Yuan family members took a step back, their expressions somewhat embarrassed.
Village Chief Chen snorted coldly, "You said it yourselves yesterday that no matter how poor or rich he is, it has nothing to do with you. Now that you hear he's gained the favor of the adults, you want to rush back to acknowledge him as a relative? You're dreaming."
The other villagers echoed, especially those who had previously been on good terms with Yuan Shanchuan. They were all gloating, "Yes, we all saw it with our own eyes. You were so ruthless yesterday, demanding money to sever ties and trying to kick him out of the house, not caring whether Shanchuan was seriously injured or not. You were capable of such cold-blooded things. Surely you wouldn't be so shameless as to try and take advantage of the situation now?"
"With so many witnesses yesterday, this severing of ties is no joke. If you can just back out whenever you want, things will descend into chaos."
"That's right. You've already taken the house and the money. Shanchuan has been generous enough. Don't push your luck."
The Yuan family members were forced to back down, unable to lift their heads, by the barrage of comments from the crowd.
From what everyone was saying, Hu Li roughly understood what had happened.
He glanced at the Yuan family with some disdain and said to Village Chief Chen, "Let's go, don't bother with irrelevant people."
"Yes, sir, this way please."
Village Chief Chen quickly led the two officials forward. The villagers of Daxu Village were really curious about what reward Yuan Shanchuan had received, and some of the more agile ones immediately followed.
The Yuan family members stood at the very back, their expressions shifting constantly.
Yuan Lao Er and Yuan Lao San both looked at Yuan Lao Da with some reproach and whispered, "Big brother, I told you this severing of ties was too serious. There was no need to escalate it to this point. Look at this..."
"Shut up."
Old Yuan glared at them, but he wasn't entirely without regret.
Although his goal was the treasure buried in the yard, he felt uneasy ever since he dug up the box and saw that it wasn't the gold and silver jewelry he had expected.
If only he had known, he wouldn't have broken off ties with the fourth brother. He could have found another way to slowly dig things out of that courtyard.
This is also the fourth brother's fault. He didn't tell the county magistrate that he might be rewarded earlier, which made him panic and use the worst method.
The Yuan family members looked at each other in bewilderment. In the end, they couldn't resist leaving the women to take care of the household while the others went over to see how much silver the county magistrate had awarded Yuan Shanchuan.
After hearing Hu Li's words, Da Niu left the crowd and ran towards Shangshi Village.
His face was full of excitement, and he even slipped and fell because of the slippery road due to the rain.
But none of that mattered. Da Niu ran quickly toward Lu Erbai's house.
The courtyard gate was open at the moment, and several neighbors were even sitting under the eaves talking to Lu Sixing.
With such a big event happening in the Yuan family of Daxu Village, the villagers of Shangshi Village naturally heard about it as well. Even though it was raining, it didn't stop them from getting the gossip quickly.
Well, the weather was bad today, and it wasn't easy to do anything in the fields, so I wandered over to the Lu family's door and asked Lu Sixing what was going on.
Some people cared about her, but there were also a few who just wanted to watch the spectacle.
When Da Niu ran in, panting heavily, he made such a commotion that everyone under the eaves turned to look at him.
