Chapter 13: Storytelling

Zhuangzhuang exclaimed, although he was not quite sure what stewed potatoes with pork ribs tasted like, but hearing his mother's description it sounded delicious.

Xiaoguo put the chopped ribs into water and put in a slice of cut ginger to remove the fishy smell. After the water boiled, she took out the ribs and rinsed them with water. She added oil to the pan and put in rock sugar while the oil was still hot to stir-fry it into a sugar color. Xiaoguo asked Zhuangzhuang to stand further away so as not to burn him. When Zhuangzhuang stood far enough, Xiaoguo poured the ribs in. There was a "swish" sound and Zhuangzhuang's little nose smelled the air. It smelled so good.

After the ribs are colored, pour in hot water, then add spices and salt, and put the steamer on top. Xiaoguo finds a basin and scoops two spoonfuls of rice from the rice jar, adds water and puts it on the steamer and covers the pot with a lid. After everything is done, Xiaoguo asks Zhuangzhuang to add firewood.

Zhuangzhuang, who had been waiting on the side, sat down quickly and added a large handful of firewood. He smelled the fragrance and asked his mother, "When will it be cooked?"

Xiaoguo thought for a while and said, "Add the potato vermicelli after three quarters of an hour, and then wait another quarter of an hour." Add the potato vermicelli after 45 minutes, and wait for just 15 minutes.

Zhuangzhuang counted them one by one with his little hands, but how could a three-year-old child count them clearly? Xiaoguo said nothing, went back to the house and got a small candle, "When this small candle burns out, the rice will be ready."

Zhuangzhuang then nodded ignorantly. Zhuangzhuang wanted to stay and make a fire, and Xiaoguo did not refuse. If the child insisted that he leave the room, he would definitely not be happy. He was blowing the candles hard, thinking that if the candles burned faster, the rice would cook faster. Xiaoguo looked at Zhuangzhuang with amusement and left the kitchen without saying a word.

It was already getting dark, and white smoke was coming out of the chimneys of every household. Xiao Guo thought it was about time, so she returned to the kitchen. She just happened to see Zhuang Zhuang running out and calling her, "Mom, the candles are almost burned out." Zhuang Zhuang's cheeks were flushed with excitement.

"Okay." Xiaoguo was pulled by Zhuangzhuang to the stove. They lifted the lid of the pot, and a burst of hot steam came out, accompanied by a strong aroma that hit their faces. Zhuangzhuang's stomach was growling at this moment, and so was Xiaoguo. They were not very hungry at first, but when the smell came out, the stomachs of both the big and small started growling.

The rice is cooked. In this weather, it won't be too cold to cook it out. Seeing that Zhuangzhuang is very hungry, I picked out two pieces of meat for him first, and then Xiaoguo put in the chopped potatoes and vermicelli.

Xiao Zhuangzhuang sat on the bench, the firelight from the stove shining on his face. He picked up a piece of pork ribs with his little hands and blew on it. Xiaoguo sat beside him and looked at him lovingly. When the ribs were no longer hot, Zhuangzhuang handed them to Xiaoguo and said, "Mom, you eat it."

"You eat first. Mom will eat later."

After making sure that his mother really didn't want to eat, Zhuangzhuang started eating.

The mother and son sat in front of the warm fire and played for a while. When the meal was ready, they carried the dishes and rice back to the house. Xiaoguo was influenced by Zhuangzhuang's appetite and ate two big bowls of food. Zhuangzhuang also ate a big bowl.

After eating and washing the dishes, the two went to sleep on the kang. The ancients had no entertainment, so they went to bed after eating, and lay down if they couldn't sleep.

Because he was too full to eat, Zhuangzhuang tossed and turned and couldn't fall asleep. He said to Xiaoguo pitifully, "Mom, I can't sleep."

Xiaoguo stood up and let Zhuangzhuang lean on her arms. She gently rubbed his stomach with one hand and said to him, "Mom will tell you a story."

"Okay, okay." Zhuangzhuang nodded impatiently.

Xiao Guo thought about what story to tell and decided to tell the story of Little Red Riding Hood and the Big Bad Wolf. "Once upon a time there was a little girl whose grandmother gave her a red hat..."

Listening to Xiaoguo's soft whispers, Zhuangzhuang slowly closed his eyes. When Xiaoguo finished telling the story, Zhuangzhuang fell asleep. Xiaoguo put Zhuangzhuang down, slowly got up and went out.
