Chapter 55: Making Soap Beans

Xiaoguo didn't pay any attention to the two people who left and just thought they were passers-by.

After arriving at the noodle shop, Xiaoguo got off the donkey cart carrying Zhuangzhuang and walked into the noodle shop. Xu Ruyi had been waiting for Xiaoguo in the noodle shop. Xiaoguo put Zhuangzhuang down and asked Uncle Xu to look after him while he went to the street corner to pick up people.

Before leaving, he asked Ruyi to take out the bottom of the pot and let the aroma float down the street. Then he walked to the place where the stall was set up before. Before he got close, he saw a group of people queuing there. Someone saw Xiaoguo with sharp eyes and said, "Hey, little lady, why are you so late today?"

People were attracted by her voice and looked at Xiao Guo. Xiao Guo trotted over and explained, "Excuse me, everyone, please move to the corner. I opened a store with someone, so you can eat potato noodles anytime."

As soon as these words came out, people all said yes, saying that this was much more convenient. They followed Xiaoguo to Ruyi Noodle House and everyone looked around as if they had noticed this noodle house for the first time.

Ruyi moved the pot out as Xiaoguo asked, letting the aroma drift far away with the wind. In addition to the diners brought by Xiaoguo, it also attracted a group of people who came because of the aroma.

Xiaoguo helped to bring out the ingredients from the kitchen and watched Xu Ruyi make the fish balls. He helped her when she was too busy. The potato flour was still ten cents a bowl, which was what Xiaoguo and Ruyi had agreed on before.

Because today is a trial opening, we didn't prepare a lot of things. We will sell out all the food until tomorrow when it's sold out. Xiaoguo is helping out, and Uncle Xu is with Zhuangzhuang collecting the money. All the ingredients were sold out before noon.

In addition to those who took their own bowls home to eat, there were also customers who came to eat in the store. After seeing off the guests, Xiaoguo helped Ruyi move the dishes and chopsticks on the table to the kitchen. When they came out, Uncle Xu was counting the bills. They sat down and Uncle Xu finished the bills. After Xu Ruyi put down the abacus, he asked nervously, "How much did you earn?"

Uncle Xu pushed up his glasses, keeping the secret mysteriously. Seeing Xu Ruyi's eyes wide open with nervousness, he finally couldn't hold it in any longer, "Haha, excluding the money for the ingredients, I made a net profit of 120 yuan!"

"What!!" Xu Ruyi shouted in surprise and joy. It was such an unexpected number.

Xiaoguo was also shocked, but she had some idea in her mind. First of all, they prepared more ingredients than Xiaoguo and sold more, so the money was about the same.

Xu Ruyi excitedly held Xiaoguo's hand and shook it vigorously, "Sister Xiaoguo, this is really great!"

Xiaoguo was also very happy, "Yes!"

Xiaoguo didn't have much to do afterwards. After all, today was the first day of trial operation, and it seemed that the results were good. The diners waiting for Xiaoguo also knew that they could buy potato noodles at Ruyi Noodle House, so Xiaoguo didn't need to call customers anymore. Ruyi seemed to be able to get the hang of it, although she was a little unfamiliar with it at the beginning, but she got used to it later, and Xiaoguo felt relieved.

Before leaving, Ruyi thought about buying a few maids as she couldn't prepare so many ingredients by herself. Xiaoguo didn't give any advice. Although she was good at making potato flour, Xu Ruyi should still take charge of the store as she definitely knew more than her.

After sending Xiaoguo away, Xu Ruyi came to a shop that specialized in buying and selling maids and servants. Here, the maid's indenture also fell into his hands, which made him feel relatively at ease. After all, with the indenture in his hands, he would not have any second thoughts, otherwise he would run away like the employees he had hired before.

He spent six taels of silver to buy two maids around twelve years old. He learned about their backgrounds from the seller. They were maids who grew up in a wealthy family and were sold here because their family fell into poverty. Xu Ruyi saw that the two girls were capable and nice people, so he bought them, handing over the money and the indentures.

I brought the two of them to the noodle shop, arranged accommodation for them in the backyard, briefly introduced the environment, and gave them some instructions. After seeing that they understood, I went out to buy ingredients. After all, the shop would open tomorrow and there was still a lot to prepare.

Xiaoguo left the noodle shop. It was time for dinner, so Xiaoguo took Zhuangzhuang to a wonton stall. They ordered two bowls of wonton and ate them while they were still hot.

"Mom, are we going home after eating?" Zhuangzhuang asked vaguely while chewing rice noodles.

Xiaoguo heard it and said, "After dinner, mom will go buy some things and come back to make soap beans in the afternoon."

There was plenty of time, and the two of them finished their wontons leisurely. After paying, they pulled the donkey cart towards the street. Xiaoguo had seen the method of making traditional soap in a book before. The wood ash and lard needed for making soap nuts were already available at home. Traditional soap also required wine, but there was no wine at home, so they had to buy some. They also wanted to make some soap nuts with sulfur to use for bathing and washing their face, which could sterilize and remove grease. They also needed to go to the pharmacy to buy Polygonum multiflorum for washing their hair.

After buying everything they needed, Xiaoguo took Zhuangzhuang home. The donkey cart arrived at the door but they didn't go in. There wasn't much grass left at home, so they took the opportunity to cut a cartload of grass.

Zhuangzhuang came home with the cow and wanted to follow him, but Xiaoguo let him do as he pleased. He went home, got the sickle, and led the donkey cart to the river.

The grass here was more lush, so Xiaoguo cut the grass faster and soon the cart was full. Zhuangzhuang, who was leading the cow, had also eaten his fill. The donkey had also eaten a lot, and when they thought it was enough, they went home.

After returning home, Zhuangzhuang took on the task of unloading the grass. Zhuangzhuang hugged an armful of grass, walked to the wall and threw it down, and did not forget to feed the grass to the chickens and ducks. Xiaoguo saw that Zhuangzhuang could do it himself, so he went back to the house to get the pot and started to boil soap beans.

First, wash the soap beans with clean water, then put them in a pot, add water and start boiling. When the water boils, add wood ash and wine. When the water boils, cover it with gauze to filter, pour out one third of it into a ceramic jar and use it to wash dishes instead of detergent.

Take out half of the remaining liquid and put it in another pot. Add lard and sulfur. Bring to a boil, cover with gauze, filter and pour into a rectangular container. Place in a cool place to cool. After it solidifies, cut it to make saponin soap, which can be used to wash your face and take a bath. Add lard and Polygonum multiflorum to the remaining liquid, filter it, pour it out, let it cool and cut it before washing your hair. Polygonum multiflorum can promote hair growth and health.

After making the soap nuts, roll the soap nut residue left after filtering it into a ball and use it to wash clothes. Roll five balls in total and place them on the windowsill to dry.

At this time, Xiaoguo, who had just washed his hands, heard a chirping sound from the chicken coop. Out of curiosity, he went outside to check. Before he went out, he saw Zhuangzhuang running towards Xiaoguo excitedly with something in his hands. Xiaoguo caught him, looked at Zhuangzhuang whose face was flushed with excitement, and asked in confusion, "What's wrong? What's going on?" While asking, he took off the chicken feathers stuck on his head.

"Mom, mom, look!" She opened her palm and handed it to Xiaoguo.

There were two chicken eggs and a duck egg inside. Xiao Guo said happily to Zhuang Zhuang, "Did they lay these?"

"Yeah!" Zhuangzhuang nodded. "Just now when I went to feed the grass, I saw two chickens and a duck in the nest. They didn't come out, so I went in to take a look. When I lifted the nest, they were startled and ran out. There were three big eggs underneath!"

She handed it to Xiaoguo to see, and Xiaoguo raised his eyebrows, "Look! Mom said they would lay eggs in two days!"
