Chapter 64: Going to the County to Buy Timber

After dinner, Xiaoguo asked Zhuangzhuang to take his uncle back to the house to rest while he went to wash the dishes.

Zhuangzhuang obediently stood up and helped Qin Anming back to the inner room.

Xiaoguo didn't rest because there was too much to do this afternoon.

First, tie the cow to the yard and get out of the house.

Then I had to go to the county. Qin Anming was still sick, so I had to get medicine for him, buy bed boards, and then come back to build a bed for myself, as well as daily necessities such as a wardrobe.

There was also cloth. His clothes were no longer wearable and the patches were almost covering them. He also needed to buy new shoes.

Thinking of this, Xiaoguo felt that time was very tight and she wished she could be broken into two halves. At this moment, she was extremely envious of Sun Wukong, who could blow out a monkey by plucking a hair. How great it would be if she could have this ability!

After collecting his thoughts, Xiaoguo continued to be busy. After tying the cow and the donkey together, Xiaoguo came into the house with a shovel. Fortunately, Zhuangzhuang and I were diligent in cleaning up the cow dung, so there was not much strange smell or cow dung in the house. In addition to the fact that we cleaned and opened the windows frequently, the cows rarely defecated in the house.

During the day, Zhuangzhuang would sometimes take the cows out to graze, and sometimes tie them up in the yard to bask in the sun. The only time he stayed indoors was at night.

Xiaoguo cleaned the ground with a shovel and piled the manure in the corner. The previous manure had been buried in the soil when Xiaoguo planted the second batch of vegetables. Now the manure was collected and it would be perfect for planting potatoes and cabbage in winter.

Soon the ground was cleaned by Xiaoguo. He drew a bucket of water from the well and sprinkled it on the ground. He continued to sweep the ground with the broom. After sweeping the house, he scooped up the water with a shovel and threw it out.

When there was no more water, he poured more water and repeated this three times. Only when the strange smell on the ground was completely gone did Xiaoguo stop.

Then he took a broom and swept away the cobwebs and dust in the corners of the wall. After the room was completely bright, Xiaoguo went out, washed his hands, and swept the dust off his body.

He went back to the room and wanted to say something to Zhuangzhuang and Qin Anming, but seeing that they were sleeping soundly, he stopped talking. He quietly opened the door and went out with the donkey cart. Before leaving, he closed the door for them to prevent someone from sneaking in and they wouldn't hear him.

Driving a donkey cart to the county, Xiaoguo was already very familiar with the county, and came to a pharmacy with a full range of good quality products.

As soon as Xiaoguo entered the store, the pharmacy clerk greeted her.

"Do you need a consultation or medication?"

Xiaoguo felt a little relieved when she heard the other party's polite tone.

"Get some medicine."

After hearing the purpose of Xiaoguo's visit, the waiter led Xiaoguo to the counter, where an old man with a white beard asked about Xiaoguo's illness.

"My brother caught a cold after being caught in the rain and has been coughing. He is also weak due to malnutrition, so I want to get some medicine to boil at home."

He listened and took notes with the brush in his hand. After writing down the last herb, he took the paper and went to the medicine cabinet. The old man skillfully picked up the medicine, weighed it, and finally wrapped it up and handed it to Xiaoguo.

"There are five sets of medicine in total, one set a day, simmer over low heat for an hour, and take before going to bed at night."

Xiaoguo wrote it down, paid the money, and also asked for some herbs for making soup, such as wolfberry, lily, dangshen, lotus seed, polygonatum and fritillaria.

Seeing a medicine stove in the corner of the pharmacy, Xiao Guo asked about it and the clerk said it was for sale. Xiao Guo thought about buying one too, so that she wouldn't have to use the clay pot at home to cook soup when cooking medicine.

Xiaoguo went out with a bunch of Chinese medicine, came to the pork stall, and asked for a lot of pork bones for making soup.

Riding the donkey cart to the county edge, Xiaoguo knew there was a family dealing in lumber.

Xiaoguo came to the door and knocked. A little boy about five years old opened the door and looked Xiaoguo up and down.

"Are you here to buy lumber?"

A crisp voice came, and when Xiaoguo saw him, she thought of Zhuangzhuang, so she said softly, "Yes!"

The little boy led Xiaoguo to the yard. You couldn't see anything from the outside, but when you came in, you would see that the yard was full of cut wood, with small pieces of wood placed even in the corners.

Xiaoguo really didn't know where to start. The little boy was walking in front of him, moving forward nimbly on the gaps between the woods. Xiaoguo didn't have his ability, so he could only stop at the gate of the yard and watch the little boy's back as he walked away.

"Dad! Dad! Someone is buying wood! Dad!"

Xiaoguo stood there, waiting for someone to come out.

With the little boy's notification, the owner came out soon.

"What do you need to buy?"

A beautiful woman came out of the house and looked at Xiaoguo and asked him questions.

"I need a bed, a closet, a desk, and a stool."

Xiaoguo told her what furniture she needed. The bed and wardrobe were for Qin Anming, and the desk and stool were for Zhuangzhuang.

After hearing this, the woman asked Xiaoguo to wait for a moment and went into the house to call someone. Xiaoguo guessed it was her husband.

Sure enough, a muscular man came out of the house, his body and hair covered with sawdust. After hearing his wife talk about the furniture she needed, he went straight to the target and took Xiaoguo to see the furniture.

He introduced a lot, but Xiaoguo was a little confused after listening to him, because the finished products he made were so exquisite, and Xiaoguo thought every one of them was good!

"I can't pull anything too heavy, so..."

Xiaoguo was confused by the problem and had no choice but to throw it to him and ask him to make a recommendation.

After hearing this, the man thought about it for a moment and recommended a set of furniture that was not too heavy but practical.

Xiaoguo paid the money readily, and the man asked his wife to help load the furniture onto the donkey cart. There were four pieces of furniture in total, costing a total of six taels and five cents. Xiaoguo paid the money readily and pulled the donkey cart towards the county center. She also wanted to buy fabric from Qin Anming to make clothes.

Sitting in the donkey cart, Xiaoguo looked at the furniture he bought happily. It was indeed worth the money and the price was very affordable. However, Xiaoguo felt that the workmanship and materials were absolutely excellent!

When they arrived at the market, today was not a busy day, so there were not many people. Only the shops were open. Xiaoguo went to the place where he bought cloth last time.

As soon as Xiaoguo entered the door, she was greeted by the same woman as last time. She recognized Xiaoguo and took her to see the latest batch of fabrics. Xiaoguo chose two pieces of stain-resistant fabrics as usual. Because Xiaoguo couldn't estimate how much fabric Qin Anming would need, she could only tell her Qin Anming's height and weight and asked her to help calculate the length.

The woman estimated the size skillfully, and Xiaoguo settled the bill and left. As usual, the woman gave Xiaoguo a set of needles and thread and several colored balls of thread.

After thanking him, Xiaoguo got on the donkey cart and went to a shoe store, where she picked out three pairs of shoes. When she was packing clothes in the morning, Xiaoguo saw what size shoes Qin Anming wore, so she told the owner the size directly.

Finally, under the owner's promotion, he bought himself two pairs of shoes. When the owner saw that Xiaoguo was so generous, he gave Xiaoguo two pairs of insoles as a gift. Then he paid the bill and left with the shoes.

Xiaoguo didn't dare to stay after buying things because he had to go back to assemble the furniture, so he hurried home in his donkey cart.

When he arrived at the door of his house, Xiaoguo saw Zhuangzhuang squatting at the door with his head down, moving the soil on the ground.

"Zhuangzhuang, why don't you stay in the house and play with your uncle?"

When Zhuangzhuang heard Xiaoguo's voice, he raised his head suddenly, and the joy in his eyes almost overflowed.

"Don't worry, mother. I come out every quarter of an hour and then go back. I won't neglect uncle."

Zhuangzhuang said this while puffing out his little chest and looking at Xiaoguo with his eyes narrowed into slits as he smiled.

Xiaoguo got the hint and understood it immediately, "Wow, how come my Zhuangzhuang is so sensible! It really makes me so happy. With Zhuangzhuang around, I can worry less!"

Zhuangzhuang laughed and said, "Mom is so nice!"
