Chapter 189: After the earthquake?
He Zhaojun felt as if she had been digging for a century, with cries and screams filling her ears. Suddenly, the residence of Prefect Peng Kun was ablaze with flames and filled with smoke, but she was completely unable to care.
She came to Shouchun because she didn't want any civilians to die in the earthquake and wanted to minimize casualties. But now, someone was buried alive in front of her in order to save her.
Suddenly, a huge tree slowly rose from the ruins of the collapsed house in front of them, propping up the still intact structure. "Madam Wang... step back quickly!"
He Zhaojun took a while to react before she realized that it was Li Fu who was talking to her. She quickly took two steps back and saw Li Fu holding a beam in his hand and jumping out from under a piece of roof tiles. He looked disheveled but not injured.
"That's great, you're okay." He Zhaojun's eyes turned red and she almost shed tears.
But what about the others? She slowly turned her head and looked towards the courtyard. Almost everyone was wailing and crying. It was unknown how many people were buried under the rubble.
At this moment, a man as strong as an iron tower ran up to her in the mess, looked her up and down, and then he felt relieved.
"Brother..." He Zhaojun couldn't hold back her tears when she saw He Chuan. She fumbled for tools while crying and said, "Don't cry... I need to save people!"
He Chuan stopped her and hugged her shoulders tightly: "Little sister! Calm down! You are a girl, and it won't be very helpful to find someone yourself. There are places where you are more needed! Leave these things to me!"
He Zhaojun suddenly understood and nodded after a while, her eyes gradually becoming determined: "Okay, then I will go organize the survivors, rescue the wounded, and make porridge and medicine!"
Li Fu nodded: "Then I will go with you and ensure your safety."
They hurried along, wishing they could grow wings and rescue all those trapped in Shouchun by the earthquake. The hastily erected camp was already filled with wounded people, many with broken limbs and maimed bodies, in excruciating pain.
"Zhaojun! Zhaojun!" Wang Yan, with gauze wrapped around her head, was escorted here. When she saw He Zhaojun, she burst into tears, "Am I disfigured..."
He Zhaojun didn't bother to check. She lowered her head and counted the injured while asking, "Are you feeling dizzy, nauseous, or having blurred vision?"
Wang Yan quickly shook her head: "No, I..."
"Come and help if you have nothing to do! Don't you see so many people need to be counted? You are lucky not to be seriously injured. What else do you want?" He Zhaojun handed her the pen and bamboo slips and stood up.
She shouted to the surroundings, "Be careful of aftershocks! Don't place objects high up to avoid falling and injuring you! Everyone, stay out of the house and stay in open areas."
Many women, children, and doctors responded and continued to rush about. Wang Yan glanced around, only to find herself the only one in a daze. Suddenly, she felt a bit bewildered.
She quickly grabbed the brush and, imitating He Zhaojun's actions, asked the injured person, "What's your name? Where do you live? How many other family members are there? Are they around?"
They sat there until most of the night. When it was dawn, Wang Yan could no longer hold on and yawned continuously. But when she looked up, she saw He Zhaojun organizing several women and children to distribute porridge, and she was very busy.
Wang Yan felt an indescribable shame suddenly surge in her heart. Back in the capital, she had believed herself to be a gifted daughter of heaven. How could a woman like Zhaojun be so crude and vulgar, and not a good match for Wen Ziduan?
But today she finally understood that her past self was just a clown: "He Zhaojun, I have something to tell you!"
Li Fu, who was standing next to him, was stunned and looked at He Zhaojun: "Didn't you say your name is Wang Zhaojun?"
