Just as Jiang's mother was about to tidy up the yard, she received a message on her phone that Jiang Mian and her companion would arrive in a few minutes.
She rushed out and found the water bucket that had been overturned for no reason when she got to the yard. Water was spilled all over the ground, making the floor look like a large ink painting.
Jiang's mother felt a throbbing pain in her temples. She glared at Jiang's father and said, "Did you kick this over?"
Jiang's father pointed to his pelvis and argued, "My bones haven't even fully healed yet, where would I get the strength to kick over the bucket?"
But judging from his expression that he didn't want to receive his future son-in-law, he was probably the one who did it!
Jiang's father didn't try to hide anything; instead, he had an irritating expression that said, "So what if you know? There's no evidence to prove it anyway."
"You just wait, I'll deal with you later!"
Jiang's mother was furious, but the two children were almost there, and now was not the time to argue or hold anyone accountable.
She hurriedly grabbed a mop and used it to clean up the dirty water.
The temperature is rising a bit as it gets closer to noon, but these water stains probably won't dry anytime soon.
Just as Jiang's mother put down the mop, He Yubai had already driven the car to the door.
Because Jiang's mother had tipped them off, both of them knew that Jiang's father disliked He Yubai to some extent.
Before getting off the bus, He Yubai couldn't help but feel nervous and wiped the thin layer of sweat from his forehead.
I didn't understand it at the time, but now that I'm involved, I don't know.
His heart was pounding with nervousness, especially after learning that Uncle Jiang didn't like him, He Yubai became even more flustered.
I used to think that when sons-in-law came to visit their wives' homes, even a tiger would be subdued like a cat. Now that I think about it, that description is indeed true.
Jiang Mian was about to open the door and get out of the car when He Yubai grabbed her arm.
The latter noticed his nervous expression and couldn't help but smile and comfort him, "Don't be afraid, my dad is just a little moody, he won't do anything to you. Besides, he has difficulty walking now, even if he wanted to hit you, he probably couldn't catch you."
This comforting reassurance seemed helpful, but it did not actually put He Yubai at ease.
Especially since the Jiang family's courtyard gate was not closed, his action of grabbing Jiang Mian's arm made the situation even more complicated.
Jiang's father, who was lying in the yard sunbathing, saw everything.
The other person's gaze was icy, his eyes filled with the message: You dare to mess around under my nose, kid, you're dead!
However, the next second, Jiang's mother blocked his view.
The elders have already come to greet us at the door; it would be a bit unreasonable not to get out of the car now.
He Yubai looked in the mirror to make sure his appearance was acceptable before he felt relieved and got out of the car with Jiang Mian.
While the mother and daughter were exchanging pleasantries, he cleverly took out the fruits and gifts he had bought from the trunk.
There were seven or eight bags in total; even if Jiang's mother wanted to pretend she didn't see them, it would be impossible.
"You're here, why bring so much stuff?"
Jiang's mother spoke reproachfully, but her expression showed great satisfaction.
As the saying goes, a mother-in-law is always more satisfied with her son-in-law the more she looks at him.
Especially since He Yubai is such a handsome young man, not only is he good-looking, but his family also owns a large company and makes a lot of money.
Standing together with Mianmian, the two of them found it very pleasing to the eye.
Jiang's mother was satisfied, and her smile widened. She took the things from He Yubai's hands and urged the two of them to come inside.
Throughout the entire ordeal, Jiang's father lay motionless in the rocking chair, as if he had no bones.
From the moment he entered the courtyard, He Yubai felt as if he were being locked onto by an invisible gaze.
The further you go in, the stronger the gaze becomes.
Needless to say, it must be Jiang's father watching him.
Despite feeling a chill run down his spine, He Yubai consciously walked to Jiang's father's side and took the initiative to greet him: "Uncle Jiang, hello. This is the first time Mianmian has brought me to your home. I didn't know what you and Auntie liked, so I took the liberty of buying some gifts. Do you like them?"
He Yubai knew that getting past his parents was the hardest hurdle to overcome in order to marry a wife.
He lowered his posture, not daring to show any of the airs of a young master.
He was afraid that Jiang's father would think he was a rich second-generation and associate him with those unambitious and good-for-nothings.
The gifts He Yubai presented included cigarettes, alcohol, and a number of medicinal herbs, all excellent gifts for a first meeting.
Jiang's father glanced at it casually, then gave a faint "hmm".
This made He Yubai even more nervous. What did this "hmm" mean?
He wanted to turn around and seek Jiang Mian's help, but before he could turn his head, Jiang's father suddenly spoke up again: "You should still call me Uncle Jiang. You should take these cigarettes and alcohol back with you. The doctor told me to rest well and not to touch these things."
Upon hearing this, He Yubai immediately became flustered.
He turned to seek Jiang Mian's help, only to hear Jiang's father's displeased tone again: "I'm talking to you, why are you looking at Mianmian?"
"I……"
He Yubai was on the verge of tears; it seemed like he was being directly targeted by Uncle Jiang!
"Alright, alright, go ahead and sunbathe. You're so quiet, you can't even utter a word. I told you to pretend to be mute when you were talking, but now Xiao He is talking nonstop."
Jiang's mother couldn't stand it anymore and interrupted, "Xiao He, come in and sit down. Auntie has already prepared the meal. You must be tired and hungry after driving all this way. Let's wash our hands and eat first."
Jiang's father glared at him, knowing he was going against him. "You know your daughter is about to be stolen away by this brat?!"
He Yubai was deeply moved when he saw Jiang's mother speak up for him.
As expected, mothers-in-law will still side with their sons-in-law!
Jiang's mother took the gift from He Yubai's hand and snorted at Jiang's father, "Now you're listening to the doctor. It's best if you don't touch cigarettes or alcohol. You'd better never touch them for the rest of your life!"
