If they didn't run fast, the boulder would crush them, leaving them bloodied and mangled, and they would die instantly.
Chang Lili looked at both sides of the road, walls, walls, and more walls. The huge rocks rolled over, leaving a piercing sound, and even the oil lamps on the walls were crushed to pieces.
The boulder was moving extremely fast and showed no signs of stopping. If it kept going like this, it would eventually catch up with them and crush them into a pool of blood.
What to do? What to do?
The walls on both sides rushed past, and Chang Lili suddenly felt a lightness in her body as Meng Yuxiu held her in his arms. She looked up, wanting him to put her down, but when she looked up, she saw his tense, pale face and his chin covered with light blue stubble.
At this critical moment, Chang Lili found Meng Yuxiu more handsome than ever before. He had a reassuring scent that she liked, and she, who had just been terrified, suddenly felt less scared.
She suddenly calmed down and looked at the boulder getting closer and closer to them. She couldn't help but reach out and grab Meng Yuxiu's shoulder tightly. She didn't want to see Meng Yuxiu lose his life.
“This is a formation, there must be a way to break it,” she whispered. Her mind raced, recalling all the books on mechanisms she had read late into the night a few days ago. Suddenly, her eyes lit up, and she exclaimed, “This is a rolling stone formation! Eastern position! Meng Yuxiu! Which way is east? There’s a life gate over there!”
Chang Lili gripped Meng Yuxiu's shoulders and clothes tightly with both hands, her eyes wide like saucers. Even though she wasn't running hard, she was panting heavily. As the boulder drew closer, she closed her eyes, wrapped her arms tightly around Meng Yuxiu's neck, and buried her head in his chest.
Suddenly, Meng Yuxiu moved to the side, and the boulder rolled over with a rumble.
Hearing the sound of the boulder pass by and grow ever more distant, Chang Lili opened her eyes in surprise.
What he saw was Meng Yuxiu's relaxed face, forcing a smile. He said softly, "It's alright now."
Chang Lili hugged him tightly, and her heart finally calmed down.
"I thought we were doomed," she said, still shaken.
Meng Yuxiu patted her back gently, as if comforting a frightened child: "It's alright now. Look, you've broken through the formation, and we've passed another checkpoint."
Chang Lili then showed a happy expression. She got off Meng Yuxiu and looked at the dark room. The dark room was very small, and it seemed to be used specifically to hide from the stone ball.
The rumbling sound faded into the distance. Chang Lili poked her head out and saw that the oil lamps had been knocked to pieces. Some were extinguished, some were teetering on the verge of collapse, and some had fallen to the ground, still burning stubbornly.
She peeked out for a while, her stomach growling with hunger, and thought the situation was truly miserable.
Meng Yuxiu smiled and pulled her out of the dark room, saying, "Don't rush, I think we'll be leaving soon. We've already passed so many checkpoints, and even if there are more, there won't be many more."
Chang Lili nodded weakly: "I hope so."
Meng Yuxiu grabbed her hand, left the dark room, and slowly walked forward.
Looking at Meng Yuxiu's resolute profile, Chang Lili instantly beamed with joy, snuggled up to hug his arm, and rubbed against him like a kitten.
Meng Yuxiu couldn't hide his smile as he said indulgently, "Even if you're like this, I don't have anything to give you right now. If you can chew it, just eat it."
He stretched out his arm, his smile growing even brighter.
"Who wants to eat your arm?" she said, raising an eyebrow. "I went through all that trouble to bring you into battle, not for this."
She spoke casually, but Meng Yuxiu suddenly leaned closer, his warm breath hitting her face: "What? If it's not to eat me, then what is it for?"
Chang Lili blinked, looking at the ambiguous expression on Meng Yuxiu's face, and unexpectedly smiled with satisfaction. Her face was flushed with shyness, but she said confidently, "It would be a waste to eat it. It will be very useful in the future."
After saying that, her face was so red it could bleed, and she finally turned her face away in embarrassment, muttering, "Besides, how could I dare to eat you? You are the Great General of Yun Kingdom. If I ate you, not only would I have a hard time explaining to the people, but I also wouldn't be able to explain to those girls who longed to marry you!"
Meng Yuxiu replied somewhat reluctantly, "When did you ever need to explain our affairs to unimportant people?"
Chang Lili felt a warmth in her heart upon hearing this, but before she could say anything, she saw a dazzling white light in front of her.
She blinked in disbelief, grabbed Meng Yuxiu, and exclaimed excitedly, "Did you see that? Did you see that?"
Meng Yuxiu smiled and said, "It's the exit."
Chang Li almost jumped up with excitement: "We made it through the traps! We're out! We're out alive! I'm going to join the Light Machinery Department!"
She happily hugged Meng Yuxiu, and even while hugging him, she still jumped around restlessly.
Meng Yuxiu smiled helplessly as he put his arm around her and asked, "Aren't you hungry now?"
Chang Lili then let go of him, clutching her rumbling stomach, and pulled him forward with a pained expression, constantly complaining, "How is this possible? I'm so hungry my stomach is practically sticking to my back, and you're injured too, let's get out of here quickly!"
As she spoke, she pulled Meng Yuxiu along and jogged towards the light, complaining as she went, but her steps were light and quick.
As she approached, the light intensified, and soon Chang Lili saw a door ahead, the light leaking out from the cracks in the iron door.
Compared to the checkpoints we had cleared before, this iron gate was truly shabby, but it was secured with a golden lock, which looked completely out of place with the rusty iron gate.
Chang Lili frowned as she looked at the small golden lock, puzzled. Out of the corner of her eye, she noticed another small object next to the door, which turned out to be another small forging furnace.
"What... what does this mean now?" she asked, puzzled. Judging from the situation, was she going to be asked to make a key again?
Meng Yuxiu stepped forward and took a look, then took out the forging furnace. He examined the coal, gold nuggets, and fine-toothed milling cutters inside, and said thoughtfully, "This is probably to remind us that everything should have a beginning and an end."
Chang Lili let out a breath and said, "Alright, then I'll also tell the person who set up the formation that since I chose the art of mechanisms, I will never regret it."
As she spoke, she bent down to get to work.
This was a piece of cake for her, though it would take some effort. As she worked, she murmured to herself, "Chan'er really doesn't seem like a mechanical doll. If such a mechanical doll could be made, it would be astonishing. But why hasn't such a skilled craftsman made a name for himself in history?"
While tending to the fire in the forging furnace, Meng Yuxiu casually remarked, "It is said that the person who set up the formation kept his name hidden and did not want anyone to know his identity, and that he spent most of his time on the run."
Chang Lili looked surprised: "Escape? Shouldn't someone as capable as him be living a life of luxury? How could he be living such a miserable existence?"
"I don't know about that. He seems unwilling to do things for nobles," Meng Yuxiu said indifferently.
“Mu Yun… Mu Yun… I feel like I’ve heard that name before,” Chang Lili said thoughtfully.
