"Clang!" The sound of weapons clashing was chilling. A spark pierced the darkness. Meng Yuxiu parried the curved blade that was attacking him with his sword. Then, he reacted quickly and kicked backward, knocking over an assassin who was trying to sneak up on him. The vicious kick knocked down a dead tree next to him and sent him crashing to the ground, kicking up a cloud of dust!
The intense commotion ignited everyone's fighting spirit. At first, everyone was still wary of poison, but now that Meng Yuxiu was like this, those staring at him had fierce killing intent in their eyes.
"Wait!" A sharp cry rang out, and everyone abruptly stopped in their tracks, their hands raised to strike the knife. They all looked in astonishment at the man who was stumbling down from the carriage, supported by his arms.
"Don't fight, don't fight, let's talk this over, everyone."
Chang Lili, who was bound hand and foot after getting off the carriage, now looked rather dashing, except for a bit of grime on her face. She could still smile even when faced with several pairs of fierce eyes, as if she could wave a fan if given one.
Immediately afterwards, Bai Cha followed and came down.
The assassins were all taken aback when they saw the two men emerge.
Chang Lili caught her breath and said, "Didn't you want to see Meng Yuxiu? He's already here. If you two start fighting over a disagreement, won't all your efforts be wasted? Speak quickly, or it will be too late."
Before they could even ponder the meaning of Chang Lili's words, everyone who was frozen in place heard the faint sound of horses' hooves pounding the ground.
Someone's here!
"Meng Yuxiu, you cheated!"
Meng Yuxiu twirled the Mengli sword and sheathed it, saying, "You used unjust and immoral methods, and you still dare to blame me? Besides, she's not one of my people. The Bai Cha girl you kidnapped is the main character tonight, and you're the ones who alarmed the prefect."
Immediately afterward, the leader of the assassins' eyes flickered with an inscrutable light, and finally he said, "Go!"
Suddenly everyone stopped fighting, mounted their horses, and the cover of night quickly disappeared.
Chang Lili and her companions also left before the army arrived, leaving only a lone carriage in the once tense woods.
The Duanzhou Commandant who arrived looked around, and the inspecting soldier took down several cut ropes from the carriage and said, "Sir, these were found in the carriage."
Upon seeing this, the captain asked in confusion, "What's going on? Did they release the people, or did they take them with them?"
He reined in his horse, glanced around, and said, "Chase! They can't have gone far. We must find Bai Cha tonight and ensure her safety."
Having identified a direction, he led his men in pursuit.
Meanwhile, on the way back to the city, two horses were walking at a leisurely pace.
The people on horseback were the three from the grove earlier: Meng Yuxiu, Chang Lili, and Bai Cha.
"You really came all alone? You're taking too much risks."
"Too many people are unsafe. They are cautious and don't want to reveal their whereabouts. If I force them, you will be the ones in danger."
Chang Lili thought it made some sense, but she was still a little apprehensive and said, "It's still too risky."
Meng Yuxiu did not answer, and the three of them remained silent for a while.
They walked all the way to the end of the road, where a carriage was parked, and a man stood beside it—Xu Yuandao, a man of exceptional talent and elegance.
Meng Yuxiu dismounted and said to them, "We'll take this carriage back later. The whole city is being searched right now."
Chang Lili wanted to ask how to resolve the matter from tonight, so she dismounted and went to fetch Bai Cha. Fortunately, Xu Yuandao reached out, so she walked over to Meng Yuxiu and asked, "So how do we resolve this? Do we have to expose your identity to investigate those people?"
Meng Yuxiu shook his head and said, "No."
"Then what should we do?"
"Come here. I have something to ask you," Meng Yuxiu said. "Please take care of Miss Baicha while you're away."
Chang Lili followed with a solemn expression. The two stood behind the carriage, and she said anxiously, "What should we do? This matter has blown up so much. That prefect will definitely not let it go. Even if Bai Cha goes back now, he will definitely investigate. I think... ah!"
Before she could finish speaking, she felt a sharp pain in her cheek and cried out in pain. She glared at Meng Yuxiu, who was pinching her cheek, but when she saw Meng Yuxiu's gloomy face, she swallowed hard, feeling guilty.
Are these things you should be worrying about?
"Your problems are my problems, I'll help you share the burden," Chang Lili said vaguely.
Meng Yuxiu sneered and said, "Help me share my burdens? Do you know how I felt when I came looking for you?"
He had never been so panicked in his life. He had dealt with barbarians for several years and knew better than anyone how ruthless they could be.
Chang Lili couldn't possibly be their target, so taking her away meant they could kill her at any time.
When Chang Lili was taken away by them, Meng Yuxiu felt as if a hand was gripping his heart tightly. He didn't dare to breathe too hard, for fear of shattering his precarious peace.
Chang Lili glanced at Meng Yuxiu and saw that his face was terribly gloomy. He hadn't looked this gloomy when he was fighting ten people by himself. She hurriedly said, "I was wrong, I was wrong. I was just thinking that they were going to take Bai Cha away. We couldn't just let them take away such a weak woman like her."
Weak woman?
Meng Yuxiu looked at her thin arms and legs; any barbarian warrior could easily break them. How dare she try to be a hero?
"What can you do there? They're using Bai Cha to threaten me. Going with them is just suicide! Do you understand?"
"Yes, they only care about your confidante, General. I am an insignificant person."
Meng Yuxiu was stunned, staring at her twisted face, and almost laughed out of anger.
He coughed and said sternly, "What am I supposed to do if they really do something to you? Slaughter their entire tribe to avenge you, then forget about you and go back to the capital to marry some random woman?"
Chang Lili glared at him: "You dare!"
Meng Yuxiu chuckled, released her from his embrace, and said, "So, be careful in everything you do, and don't take any more risks on your own."
After a night of thrills and terror, Chang Lili finally breathed a sigh of relief in his familiar and warm embrace, grabbed Meng Yuxiu's clothes, and closed her eyes.
She wasn't afraid at the time, but she became a little weak when she returned to Meng Yuxiu's side.
With no one around, Chang Lili tiptoed and kissed his cheek, saying, "I knew you would come to save me. Besides, I have hidden weapons on me, so they can't hurt me. I just wanted to save Bai Cha and also see what they were up to. After all, they are your enemies, and I'm afraid they might do something to you."
Even the strongest anger in Meng Yuxiu dissipated upon hearing her gentle words, leaving only a lingering fear. He tightened his arms around her, kissed the top of her head, and said, "No one can do anything to me. You are my greatest weakness. Never put yourself in danger, understand?"
