Chapter Seventy-Nine: The Peerless Sword

He took Chang Lili's hand, raised his hand, and swung his long sword at the two assassins.

The two assassins tried to block with their knives, but the longsword broke the knives in two and instead struck the two men in black.

Before they could utter a sound, they collapsed to the ground, turning into corpses, their eyes still wide with shock and disbelief.

Meng Yuxiu was surprised. He hadn't expected that this sword, which not only looked extraordinary and wasn't cut by the assassin's knife, would easily break the assassin's knife instead.

The man in black and Chu Moyu were stunned, while Chang Lili, panting, said with relief, "That's great, that's great..."

“Lili…this sword…” Meng Yuxiu asked in confusion.

Chang Lili raised her head slightly and could vaguely see Meng Yuxiu's chin. Her forehead was covered with beads of sweat, but she smiled and said, "This took me a long time to make. I failed many times, but it seems that I finally succeeded this time."

The men in black stopped attacking, their eyes filled with surprise as they exchanged glances.

Chu Moyu looked at Chang Lili, his eyes no longer filled with disdain, but with naked scrutiny and sizing.

Suddenly, one of the men in black rushed out, brandishing a knife and heading towards Meng Yuxiu. In just a moment, the short knife in his hand was cut in two.

The moment the longsword pierced him, another man in black swiftly pulled him away, and then they all ran towards the edge of the enclosure.

With his dagger severed, the man in black, who was being dragged along, said unwillingly, "Are we just going to leave like this? This is a golden opportunity!"

It was a woman's voice, and the person who had grabbed her also spoke in a woman's voice: "Didn't you see the sword in his hand? We have no chance anymore."

Upon hearing this, no one said anything more, and they all focused on following her away.

But her brows furrowed, and Chang Lili's words echoed in her ears again and again.

None of the guards survived, and Meng Yuxiu was too exhausted to give chase. His robes were almost soaked in blood. As he watched the man in black disappear, he braced himself with his sword, knelt down, his face pale and his breathing unsteady.

"Meng Yuxiu, how are you? Imperial Physician! Where is the Imperial Physician?" Chang Lili cried out in panic.

But there was no sign of the imperial physicians anywhere; apart from the corpses, there was hardly anyone left in the hunting grounds.

Finally, Chu Moyu carried Meng Yuxiu onto the carriage. After returning to the General's Mansion, the people in the mansion went to the palace to fetch the imperial physician.

Although Meng Yuxiu suffered serious injuries, they were mostly superficial and did not affect his vital energy. He just needed to recuperate for a while.

Chang Lili, however, continued to stay in the manor to watch over him and take care of him.

Strangely, ever since Chang Lili fed Meng Yuxiu medicine once, the maids and servants in the mansion would always hand the medicine bowl to Chang Lili whenever Meng Yuxiu was about to drink his medicine.

They also secretly told Chang Lili that this was because Meng Yuxiu hated drinking bitter medicine, and the servants dared not force him, so they could only ask Chang Lili for help.

But she didn't notice the sly look the maid gave Meng Yuxiu before leaving after handing the medicine bowl to Chang Lili.

"I say, you're a great general, what kind of hardship haven't you endured? Why are you afraid of bitter medicine?" Chang Lili said, stirring the brown medicine with a spoon, puzzled.

Meng Yuxiu sighed and said, "It's precisely because I've suffered so much that I can't take any more."

He obediently opened his mouth and drank the spoonful of medicine that Chang Lili had put to his lips.

Chang Lili fed him a spoonful but then refused to feed him anymore, saying with dissatisfaction, "I see you're drinking it quite well. You said you were afraid of the bitterness, but you didn't even frown and drank it by yourself."

As he spoke, he shoved the bowl of medicine into Meng Yuxiu's hands, but Meng Yuxiu showed a pained expression: "Ah... the wound..."

Startled, Chang Lili took the bowl back: "Are you alright? Or... let me feed you."

The scene then shifted to Meng Yuxiu lying half-reclined on the bed, with Chang Lili reluctantly feeding him medicine spoonful by spoonful. Despite the bitter taste, he seemed to enjoy it immensely.

Looking at the dignified General Meng, with a childlike smile on his tough face, Chang Lili's helplessness turned into a faint and serene smile.

This moment was too peaceful and beautiful for her.

I remember a few days ago, Meng Yuxiu came back from the hunting grounds covered in blood.

Chang Lili was in a daze. She really thought that Meng Yuxiu would die. The fear in her heart was like a raging wave that swallowed her up.

She only came to her senses when she heard the imperial physician's diagnosis, tears welling up in her eyes.

When she saw Meng Yuxiu open his eyes and say "It's alright," she realized that Meng Yuxiu was such an important person to her.

Seeing him injured and slowly recovering, and feeling even more anxious and joyful as I watched my mother-in-law injured and recovering, was truly remarkable.

"This sword is quite unique. Did you forge it?" Meng Yuxiu asked, looking at the longsword on the table.

Chang Lili said smugly, "What? You don't believe me? I told you I created it. Why would I lie under those circumstances?"

Meng Yuxiu said with a smile, "I don't disbelieve you, but I realize I underestimated you. You probably don't have this kind of talent. Perhaps you are a genius."

Chang Lili was amused by him and rudely poured the little medicine in her mouth into his mouth directly down his throat.

Meng Yuxiu coughed a few times but didn't pursue the matter. He asked curiously, "How did you forge such a fine sword? And... what was the purpose of forging this sword?"

His tone was calm, but his eyes revealed anticipation.

"You said I'm a genius, I was just playing around when I was bored!" Chang Lili put the empty bowl aside and said without thinking.

Disappointment showed on Meng Yuxiu's face, but he still managed a faint smile: "Thanks to this sword, thank you to the genius swordsmith Master Chang for forging this sword, otherwise I, the great general, would have been ambushed by someone else instead of dying on the battlefield."

Seeing that he actually believed it, Chang Lili became anxious again and simply said, "I put a lot of effort into making it, and failed many times. It was specially made for you."

Meng Yuxiu suddenly raised his eyelids and looked at Chang Lili, his once calm eyes now showing ripples.

"Made for me?" A smile spread across his face, but his eyes remained fixed on Chang Lili, seeking a definite answer.

Chang Lili nodded, feeling both helpless and amused.

A joyful smile suddenly bloomed on Meng Yuxiu's face, leaving even Chang Lili stunned.

He just smiled, like a naive child who had received candy, but he didn't say a word. It was as if if you ignored him, he could just sit there and laugh for hours.

"Aren't you happy to receive this peerless sword from me, a genius swordsmith? Let me tell you, I meticulously controlled the proportions of steel and iron, forging it layer by layer. It's the only one of its kind in the world," Chang Lili said proudly as she stood up and paced around.

Meng Yuxiu simply smiled at her, and after she finished speaking, he said in a slightly deep voice with infinite gentleness, "Thank you, Lili, I like it very much."

Chang Lili saw her own blank expression reflected in his eyes, and her face flushed red.

"No...it's nothing, you're welcome, it was nothing...I'll go out now." She hurriedly grabbed the bowl and ran out of the room.
