At the beginning, people had no accurate concept of disaster.
Vast swathes of death, like shadows spread across the building. Corpses—human, animal, plant—were scattered, the distinctions indistinguishable. Living beings, in various ways, despaired. In those first moments, there was nothing in sight but dead silence.
Will creates vague divisions in humanity, but once large numbers of superpowers awaken, these distinctions become as distinct as those between chickens and ducks. Just as in a group, attention is always drawn to the strongest creatures—the most powerful, the strongest, the largest, the most dazzling... And superpowers are the individuals among humans who wield the greatest power.
High-level psychics suppress low-level psychics, and psychics suppress ordinary people. The post-apocalyptic hierarchy is thus tacitly established, and the law of the jungle and the respect for the strong are even more so.
When the threat to survival subsided and the order of life began to function, the desires in human nature grew, driving them to pick up tools and weapons again and start exploring.
Bases began to be established, the superpowers set up the front lines, and ordinary people continued production in factories. A stable, simple social operation model was born. It was like a primitive tribe, but also like some kind of ideal world.
Until the scattered survivors began to share what they had, people became familiar with the world, and were no longer surprised or frightened by the mutated creatures. The emergence of various countermeasures increased the survival ability of individual humans.
Then, with external pressure and threats gone, internal conflicts began to erupt. Human needs are endless. In a sufficiently small society, the differences in individual gains and desires are enough to trigger a massive wave of criticism. Even if the context is magnified, this logic still applies within a group.
The "useless" civilizations lost in the disaster, their hidden dangers now fully exposed. The unbridgeable chasm between those with special abilities and ordinary people, the speculators profiting from it... the conflict reached a breaking point, and the line between those with special abilities and ordinary people was completely drawn.
In such an oppressive environment, hatred is no longer a matter of individual will, but an obligation attached to one's position.
Those who don't want to get involved wander around this land, like Gu Yi.
These "mercenaries" and "refugees" often mocked each other's plight, yet showed no shame in it. Within a castle like the base, they sensed the urge for intense, unproductive conflict to erupt. Most, fixated on their own small world, began to relax their vigilance against the outside world. Whether driven by a desire for exploration or the satisfaction of their own unique behavior, like a reckless disregard for conventionality, there will always be those who scorn all forms of order, willingly defying it to prove their own infallibility.
They have a strong premonition, a deep-seated sense of mission. Yet, when it comes to describing it specifically, they lack the words. It's a vague act, but surprisingly, this vagueness has so many instances of people being on the road.
Gao Zhou said it was a search, Lin Dandan commented on it as an escape, and Zhou Zhou thought it was a demonstration of possibility. Gu Yi listened for a while and first brought up the "Xingxia" incident from two years ago.
"What is that?" Xu Shiqing asked. This was something the original owner didn't know, and it was also something that the comic didn't depict. Or rather, it was something that the "author" deliberately cut out.
He could probably guess that what a "story" requires is a "story-like apocalypse," not a "real apocalypse." Death, in this context, is merely a superficial expression; the physical demise, on paper, is merely a number consumed. The true "apocalypse" lies in spiritual destruction, and this, in turn, is precisely cruel.
No one can accept the real doomsday world.
"It's just a beautiful dream." Lin Dandan replied concisely.
Zhou Zhou: "That's really beautiful." He said this as if he was being sarcastic, but his expression didn't give people that impression.
"Suppose you see an irresistible hope before your eyes, it's within your reach, and you absolutely cannot give up. But at this moment, you also have a vague premonition that this hope may lead to something you absolutely do not want to happen." Gao Zhou asked: "Shi Qing, what would you choose at this moment?"
"What do you mean by hope that's so powerful?" Xu Shiqing retreated strategically. After being dragged along and taught these people in turn, he had a general understanding of the delicate hearts of these four young intellectuals. So he thought about the original owner's memory and said, "This is just like entering a laboratory."
Several people nodded. They already knew that their new companion was not the type to trap himself in darkness. In fact, Xu Shiqing was surprisingly strong.
"When you walk into that room, you should be prepared to walk out." Xu Shiqing's speech slowed down, as if he was thinking: "You won't stay long. Turn back or move forward. That's it."
"Hope is not always there, it just appears again and again." Gaozhou is melancholy.
"So what's going on at Xingxia Base?" Xu Shiqing was frantic, his head spinning. "Don't you have a good relationship with them?"
Why do you look so disappointed?
"Revive China and return to our homeland." Gu Yi patted Xu Shiqing's curly hair. He looks cold and unapproachable, but he is actually a person with a good personality.
The original owner's memory contained no memories of life in peacetime. Xu Shiqing was silent for a moment. In fact, the comics had never described Gu Yi and his friends' youth in detail. After all, it was just a background.
However, for a young person, the days of youth are unforgettable, especially when the contrast between those times and now is so tragic.
