Chapter 6: Bitter Summer (Part 2)

Xu Shiqing was stunned and didn't reply for a while.

"Do you have any intention?" Xie Chongyue laughed in anger.

"?" Xu Shiqing didn't understand, but it didn't stop him from feeling aggrieved. After all, he was right. In his opinion, Xie Chongyue was completely wasting his future in Shengjing City. It would be better for him to return to Sichuan Province.

As his teacher and friend, there is nothing wrong with Xu Shiqing thinking this way.

"...Who cares about your concern?" Xie Chongyue felt a tear of despair crept into his heart. He hadn't learned to surrender to another's heart, so naturally, he didn't understand the need to lay down his weapons and avoid hurting them. If the other person's reaction wasn't what he hoped for, or if his fantasy was shattered, Xie Chongyue's instinct for self-preservation would drive him to raise his thorns. He forgot that hedgehogs can't be hugged. To be hugged, one must, like a rose, shed his thorns.

"You don't understand me at all, just like you don't know how angry I am right now!" Xie Chongyue said, "And all this is caused by you!"

They confronted each other in Xu Shiqing's new home.

This was the hottest night in June, which was likely to make people irritable.

Xu Shiqing was also angry. Being accused for no reason would make even a clay Buddha angry. "What have I done? We've only known each other for two years! You say I don't understand you, but do you know what kind of person I am?"

"How could I not know? Are you someone who is difficult to understand?" Xie Chongyue said with a forced smile: "You have no sense of propriety, are stubborn, and picky. At the age of 28, you don't care about anything except solving cases. How many people in the bureau flirt with you are like blind people."

"Someone is flirting with me?" Xu Shiqing was stunned. "You must be mistaken. How could a lesbian be interested in an older man like me?"

“…”

Xie Chongyue was furious, thinking to himself, "I've stopped so many romantic opportunities for you. Do you think you can still concentrate on solving cases at the police station without me?"

"What are you so angry about?" Xu Shiqing's emotions came and went quickly, and he calmed down visibly, as if he didn't care about anything. "This is the best choice."

"You're wrong," Xie Chongyue said. "Not to me."

Perhaps when popularity reaches a certain level, the mind will suddenly calm down, just like the turbulent undercurrent beneath the calm sea surface -

"I care about you as a friend, but you don't seem to think so." Xie Chongyue is only six years younger than him, and they usually get along as friends.

"..." Xu Shiqing said: "I don't care about you."

"Do you know that because you get up too early, you never make it in time to buy breakfast?" Xie Chongyue didn't know why he said that, but he wanted to say it. He vaguely felt that the atmosphere on the scene was a rare opportunity, a good time to say this: "I remember, I know you often skip breakfast, so I always bring you some."

He said, "I saved the green radish in the office that you almost killed because you liked to rub its leaves when you had nothing to do. The food in the cafeteria was not to your taste, so I contacted the kitchen and got a chef. I rotated eight major cuisines for you for a month and observed what you liked one by one."

"What about you? You wanted to send me to Sichuan Province, thinking it would be good for me, but you didn't ask me whether I was willing to leave Shengjing." Something was surging in Xie Chongyue's eyes, heavy, like the boundless night outside the window at this moment.

His eyes were fixed on the person in front of him, making Xu Shiqing feel uncomfortable and want to take a step back.

He didn't know anything about what Xie Chongyue was talking about.

But this action seemed to stimulate the young man in front of him. He was too young, and his emotions were obviously unstable at the moment. Xu Shiqing saw that he took a big step forward almost at the same time as he raised his foot.

Their chests were about to touch. Xu Shiqing was startled and subconsciously moved back, but his calves hit the edge of the sofa and he fell backwards in an instant.

At the critical moment, Xie Chongyue reached forward and grabbed his sleeve.

Then the two of them fell into the sofa together.

.

"Hello?"

Xie Chongyue stood in the fire escape.

"You're with the people over there?" Xie Huaian asked, but then he said, "I think you're crazy. You know it's impossible, but you're still doing it. Do you want to rebel against Tiangang?"

"I don't have that unrealistic idea." Xie Chongyue tightened his grip, feeling like smoking a cigarette. "He was stabbed twelve times. He must have died."

"...You little bastard!" Xie Huaian, nearly sixty years old, still spoke with a powerful voice. "You're always doing stupid things!"

His voice trailed off. "I remember it clearly."

"Do you really like it that much?"

Xie Chongyue was quiet for a while, then said, "I know what to do. That's what he expects of me...but I really want to see him again."

"He still blames me," he said. "It's been six years, and he hasn't appeared in my dreams once."

"Even if I got in there, he wouldn't see me."

"They said they had seen him, but he wasn't there."

"It's not necessarily what you think. What if he's not here?" Xie Huaian said, "Don't let your imagination run wild, you idiot. Just go wherever you want to go. If you do enough missions, you'll eventually run into him."

"You know your brother is researching this, and Xu Shiqing has become one of them. You'll see him one day."

"...Okay." Xie Chongyue seemed to smile. He had matured a lot, and almost lost the recklessness of his youth. "I will be alive, don't worry about me."

After hanging up the phone, Xie Chongyue stood in the fire escape for a while. Summer had passed for a while and the temperature in Shengjing had dropped long ago, but he still felt like he was in that hot afternoon.

Countless times, Xie Chongyue thought, if only he had not been so impatient at that time and had slowly entangled with Xu Shiqing.

It would have been better if he hadn't been so eager to force the other party to give him an answer.

I regret it.

He thought, regretting why he continued the kiss. If Xie Chongyue hadn't continued the kiss, Xu Shiqing wouldn't have slapped him. Xie Chongyue wouldn't have responded with the same distance out of anger when Xu Shiqing deliberately avoided him later.

He is too reckless, too self-centered, aggressive, stupid, and arrogant.

That afternoon, the first Sunday after the accident in the quarrel, they were supposed to spend time together at Xu Shiqing's house. This had happened so many times that it had almost become a habit.

But it all ended that summer.
