Chapter 6 Dispute

When Zhang Yuying was young, she was very vain and fond of beauty, and she loved to apply vanishing cream. At that time, everyone in Jichuan County knew her thick curly hair, which stirred up a waft of sweet fragrance when she walked.

She loved dancing, and was very beautiful and pretty, a beauty in the art troupe. Later, she met a boyfriend in the army and was about to get married, but after he slept with her, he broke up with her, saying that she was a country bumpkin, coquettish, and restless, and that he wanted to go back and marry the girl of equal status that his parents had found.

And so Zhang Yuying was left behind. She was a wild, unrestrained young woman, known to everyone in the county, and young men looked at her as if she were the bicycle craze of the time, or the rural fantasies of extravagance.

They pursue such women, but do not respect them and will never marry them.

What's more, in order to be with the boyfriend who abandoned her, Zhang Yuying even rebelled against the best marriage arranged for her by her parents. The doctor in the health center later married another girl from the same village and lived a stable and prosperous life.

Comparing the two, people can't help but gossip. Land people are conservative at heart, following the old rules passed down for thousands of years, farming, taking care of their husbands and raising children. The wind of the new era passed like a rainstorm, fast, too fast, and those guys buried in the soil have not been soaked yet.

So Zhang Yuying was born in the wrong era, she was too out of line, and so she had to bear the consequences. People said she was frivolous and overestimating her own abilities, that she had wild ideas, that she wanted to cling to the city dwellers, escape this land, and couldn't wait to break away from her roots.

Such rumors hurt Zhang Yuying's family like a knife in that era. Under pressure from public opinion, Zhang Yuying's marriage was hasty, full of coping and unquestionableness.

Her parents no longer believed in her and would not allow her to make her own decisions about what kind of family she wanted to have. They had given her such freedom before, but they had seen and endured the price. This process made the couple realize that giving her freedom was wrong in itself.

So Zhang Yuying married Zhang Chengxiao, whose original name was Xu Chengxiao. He changed his name to marry into the family.

However, the Zhang family really didn't want to see their daughter who had gotten into trouble, so they asked Zhang Yuying and her husband to go to Xujia Village.

Just like that, Zhang Yuying's name and her flamboyant youth were buried in the dust raised by the wedding car.

A married woman is no longer sought after. In fact, because of her youthful deeds, Zhang Yuying has endured more difficulties, ridicule, and harshness than other women.

Until she became pregnant.

That was supposed to be a happy event.

.

Zhang Chengxiao was originally a loyal and honest man. He had no elders or relatives at home, and grew up eating at hundreds of families in Xujia Village. As a result, he was particularly hardworking and had a good reputation.

He was very happy to marry Zhang Yuying. The young man thought that Zhang Yuying was pretty and beautiful, so it was okay for him to give his heart to her.

But Zhang Chengxiao didn't expect that his wife was so beautiful.

Gradually, he began to become suspicious, always feeling that the men in the village wanted to put a hat on his head. Over time, no matter how good Zhang Chengxiao's temper was, it would be distorted into narrow-mindedness and violence by the malicious rumors and speculations of outsiders.

As the Zhang family contacted Zhang Yuying less and less, Zhang Chengxiao became more and more daring. He went from treating her like a treasure to beating and verbally abusing her in just two years.

The neighbors around the Zhang family all knew this, and no one wanted to get involved in such family affairs.

Li Cuntong's arrival rattled Zhang Chengxiao's nerves. Zhang Yuying was a rare literate woman of her generation. Zhang Chengxiao was aware of the gap between him and her, and knew they had nothing in common. His inferiority complex had always lingered in him, slowly brewing into violence over the past two years.

A feeling of frustration built up inside him. Zhang Chengxiao was still the well-regarded young man from the Zhang family, Uncle Zhang, from Xujia Village. However, the villagers knew him too well, and since he had no elders at home, they inevitably looked down on him and made fun of him.

This made Zhang Chengxiao even more irritated, and he vented his feelings on Zhang Yuying. Perhaps he also knew that he had no advantages, no merits, and could not keep Zeng Jingchuan's most beautiful girl.

So when Zhang Yuying said she was pregnant, his first reaction was that she was cheating on him.

And they almost paranoidly pinned the blame on Li Cuntong because Li Cuntong was very similar to Zhang Yuying's two boyfriends, intellectual, good-looking, and popular.

However, Li Cuntong was an educated young man respected by the village chief. He also taught the children in the village, so Zhang Chengxiao did not visit him directly.

So he watched coldly as Zhang Yuying happily told him about her pregnancy and went to prepare things for the baby. Her joy made Zhang Chengxiao hesitate for a moment, but it was like a candle in the night, blown out by the gossip of the village.

"Zhang's boy, your wife seems to be going out to see Mr. Li..." Lin Xufang kindly reminded him. The aunt and several men following her showed an irritating expression.

Zhang Chengxiao's anger exploded instantly.

.

Xu Shiqing frowned. He had never gotten along with Zhang Chengxiao. Most of the time, it was Xie Chongyue who contacted the other party and then told Xu Shiqing the information.

"Uncle Zhang is not an easy person to get along with." Xie Chongyue swallowed the adjective "stupid and cowardly" and changed his words, then continued vaguely: "That's how Aunt Zhang lost her child and her fertility."

"...He went too far." Xu Shiqing said.

"People who have too little self-esteem and can't see themselves will be like this," Xie Chongyue said sharply. "After that night, Uncle Li's wife was also frightened and died in childbirth."
