Hearing the commotion, Meng Dashan quickly ran out, first taking the basket Meng Zhao was carrying, and then retorting, "Who are you calling, you lazybones? Don't spout nonsense here. I came out and swept the snow before dawn. This is snow that fell again this morning."
Then he glanced at his front door and said, "Tsk tsk, your front door is so clean, how come I haven't seen your son and daughter-in-law come over to bring you anything?"
The man got anxious. "Who said we didn't deliver? My son and daughter-in-law delivered the things before the snow even started. My house is overflowing with stuff."
Meng Dashan got into a competitive spirit and picked up the basket to head to his house, saying, "Where is it? Where is it? Let me see. If there's too much to eat, you can share some with my family."
Meng Zhao stood helplessly at the door, feeling both amused and embarrassed. Xu Yunrong, wrapped in a thick cotton coat, ran out, ignoring Meng Dashan, and took Meng Zhao's hand, leading him into the house.
"Girl, don't stand outside the door, come in and warm up."
As he walked back into the house, he complained, "That Meng Dashan really doesn't know what's good for him. He's getting into a fight with someone in this freezing weather, leaving you out here freezing."
Meng Zhao helped Meng Dashan explain, "I'm not cold without my mother. Besides, that person just called my father a lazybones, which is why he got angry."
Xu Yunrong rolled her eyes. "Your dad wasn't angry at all. He was just showing off how filial you are. Last time you brought him that jar of wine, I told him to keep it for himself, but he insisted on inviting people over to drink it. Fine, he drank it, but then he got into an argument with them, saying it was a gift from my daughter and complaining that they drank too much. It made me so angry. Luckily, we're good friends, or they would have fallen out with him."
