Manager Zhao put down his teacup, stroked his beard, and smiled.
"Has Boss Meng changed his mind? Working at Chunfenglou is much better than setting up a stall at the dock."
Manager Zhao's tone was slightly boastful, as if he wanted Meng Zhao to see the difference between the two and make the right choice.
"Sigh, I appreciate Mr. Zhao's kindness, but let's not bring this up again. I really have no such intention."
Then he changed the subject, "Let's talk about the business I need to discuss with Mr. Zhao."
As he spoke, he took out the small jar he had been holding, removed the seal, and gestured for Steward Zhao to come forward and examine it.
Manager Zhao had long been curious about what Meng Zhao was talking about, so he got up and went closer to take a look.
Meng Zhao noticed that when he stepped forward, he first exchanged a glance with the man next to him who had not spoken, his expression showing a hint of respect.
Manager Zhao reached out and pinched a little starch, rubbing it between his fingertips. From a distance, it looked similar to flour, but upon closer inspection, it was much whiter.
The feel when kneading with your fingertips is also very different. Flour has a light texture and is very smooth when kneaded, while this stuff, although also very fine, has a noticeable astringent feel.
"Boss Meng, what is this?"
"This ingredient is called starch. It can enhance the flavor and freshness, as well as make the ingredients tender and the soup thick. It is my secret recipe for cooking."
Manager Zhao asked curiously, "Is this used for making pastries?"
"We'll have to try it out to see how to use this thing properly. I wonder if we could borrow it from the kitchen of Chunfenglou?"
Manager Zhao first glanced at the man who was looking at the starch, and after the man nodded, he replied, "Of course, Mr. Meng, please follow me."
