58. Gilded Lovers
While adjusting to my new company and new boss, I packed my bags and prepared to leave. I got busy, entered a state of flow, and felt free from worries. I couldn't bear to throw away some of the other things in my house, but I had a few particularly lush plants that I'd been nurturing for a few years, so I had to order a Lalamove delivery to a friend's house in the city.
After finishing all this, Vivian had an appointment with Feng Simiao.
During this period, the two of them were busy with their own things and rarely saw each other. But since they were about to leave the city where they had been staying for a long time, they naturally had to say goodbye to their old friend.
The two met at a vegetarian restaurant in the North District of Sanlitun Village. This restaurant, originally from Hangzhou, wasn't particularly popular there, but it became a popular spot with lines lining up every day.
Strange, isn't Hangzhou said to be a food desert?
Feng Simiao specifically requested this place, and it just so happened that Vivian was taking a new colleague to her old employer that day to catch up with the old colleague they would be working on a project with. Seeing the two of them chatting happily, she left early and took her computer to the restaurant to reserve a table.
She ordered a pot of tea and waited leisurely. After all, modern oxen and horses have their own reins, and with a computer, anywhere can be an office.
Feng Simiao slowly approached as the surrounding tables gradually filled with guests. She was exceptionally thin, a size zero, and now, with a bulging belly, it looked as if she was about to give birth.
"Oh my God!" Vivian hurriedly stood up and helped her sit down. She couldn't help but reach out and carefully touch her proudly protruding belly. "Why didn't you tell me?"
Feng Simiao showed a motherly smile that was unfamiliar to her: "I couldn't tell you in the first few months. After that, you became busier and busier, and you didn't care about me anymore. I wouldn't even ask you out."
Calculating the time, it turned out that Feng Simiao didn't drink at the wedding for a reason: "No wonder..."
She originally thought that the guests simply didn't dare to urge Feng Simiao to drink like they would for an ordinary bride.
"Then...is there anything I can't eat?" Vivian asked cautiously, growing nervous. She had no experience with this sort of thing.
"The black truffle fried rice and quinoa pepper and tofu are delicious. For dessert, I have to go for the taro. I chose this place because I can eat almost any of their dishes. Oh, and you treated me today. I was so bored because you didn't see me for so long."
Although this restaurant has always been popular and is located above a number of luxury stores, its prices are very affordable. After all this time, Feng Simiao still maintains the habit they have always had.
Vivian suddenly felt a little emotional, and her eyes became sore.
She blinked, almost crying. Not only because Feng Simiao was still considerate of her, but also because time seemed to be speeding up visibly. Not long ago, the two of them were carefree, only knowing how to eat, drink and have fun, but in the blink of an eye, Feng Simiao was about to become a mother.
"What's wrong? I asked you to treat me, but you're so angry?" Feng Simiao joked.
After she became pregnant, she still had a name on the company's payroll, but she never went to the office again, essentially focusing on her pregnancy. This was normal; children were always more important than anything else, especially for her.
But Feng Simiao hadn't originally planned to have children so soon. She'd always loved to travel. From her time studying abroad until her marriage, every vacation she'd spent was spent venturing around the world. While others were still taking budget airlines and red-eye flights, she indulged in first-class flights and five-star hotel stays. With the exception of South America and Antarctica, which she considered too far away, she'd already explored every other exciting destination.
Feng Simiao and Lin Yang had been in love for years, and marriage was inevitable. They were a perfect match, both talented and beautiful, and she had never doubted that. But she had originally considered marriage a mere formality. They had already lived together, their lifestyles accustomed to each other. A marriage certificate was simply a legal basis for the distribution of property, not unlike a partnership agreement.
She planned that the two of them would be free and playful for at least a few more years.
But I didn’t expect that just after we started planning the wedding, the next question would be: When are you going to have children?
This is a natural thing to do, even for her parents who have always doted on her, because she is now an "adult" and can no longer act willfully.
When asked about her annoyance, she even regretted agreeing to get married so quickly.
Her boyfriend was great, and so was marriage. But if they hadn't gotten married yet, having children wouldn't have been on the agenda. But she had already embarked on this path of no return, and there was no reason to refuse.
She doesn't hate children, but she doesn't look forward to it that much either.
Who knew that before the wedding even took place, she would be pregnant? This was a surprise to both families, and the parents were overjoyed. This unborn child was destined to live a life of luxury.
But Feng Simiao felt that he was not as happy as before.
Feng Simiao's mind was in turmoil for a moment, and Vivian saw a slightly troubled look on her face.
This expression rarely appeared on her face before. Because she was a darling of heaven, she could have whatever she wanted, without having to suppress herself or the so-called delayed gratification.
Seeing Weiwei's questioning look, Feng Simiao sighed deeply, "My pregnancy reaction was very severe. I vomited violently every day for the first few months. I vomited everything I ate, until I vomited blood. It got better later. I went out today because I had to see you. But Lin Yang was still worried and asked me to be home before nine o'clock."
"Are you feeling unwell now?" Vivian also became nervous, worried that if anything happened today, she would be the culprit.
"It's okay. He'll pick me up at nine. The hardest part is over. We'll be unloading the cargo soon."
Vivian couldn't help but frown.
She had always thought that using the word "unloading" to describe childbirth was frivolous, as if the female body was just a container. But now she understood that for someone who vomited day and night without stopping, it was indeed like lifting a heavy burden.
A strange emotion arose in her heart.
Even an enviable girl like Feng Simiao had to endure the pain of childbirth with her body every day, like a rolling nail board, and no one could replace her.
She couldn't say anything about the topic, but fortunately, they hadn't seen each other for a long time, so they had plenty of topics to talk about, from gossip about former colleagues to Feng Simiao's mild complaints about her mother-in-law. As they chatted, Feng Simiao's expression relaxed: "I haven't felt this relaxed in a long time. Lin Yang is so annoying. He told me not to go out for the past few months."
"You are so thin, you really need to be careful. Lin Yang must be very happy, right?" Vivian lowered her head to pick up some food and comforted him in a half-hearted manner.
But there was no response from Feng Simiao.
She raised her head and saw two lines of tears silently sliding down Feng Simiao's cheeks.
"What's wrong? What's wrong?" She hurriedly moved from the opposite side to Feng Simiao and put her arm around her shoulders.
"It's okay, it's just a hormone imbalance." Feng Simiao sniffed, "It's been like this a lot lately."
"Are you really okay? If you have anything, you can tell me." After years of friendship, she understood Feng Simiao. It was rare for Feng Simiao to hesitate like this. This kind of behavior meant he had something he wanted to say, but was hesitant.
Feng Simiao checked the time. Lin Yang wouldn't be here for a while. As if she had made a great decision, she swiped through the photo album on her phone and handed it over.
It was a densely packed collection of more than a dozen WeChat chat screenshots. Looking through them, it turned out that a friend of Feng Simiao's had recently run into Lin Yang in Shanghai. As they were about to greet him, they saw him enjoying a meal and drinks with a beautiful woman. The friend, persistent enough, had followed them all the way, secretly taking photos and reporting back to Feng Simiao, until they entered a hotel.
It's not really that weird. Or rather, it's too vulgar.
Such a common affair should not happen to someone like Lin Yang.
"Then... have you asked him?" Vivian asked cautiously.
"No. I guess he'd deny it even if I asked. Entering the hotel doesn't necessarily mean anything. Just sitting in the lobby bar is also possible."
"...That's true. Actually, it might not have really happened. Don't think too much about it." Vivian herself didn't believe these words of comfort.
Feng Simiao held her hand and looked at her intently: "Do you really think so?"
Vivian avoided her gaze and stared at the ends of the chopsticks, as if there was some secret on them: "I just think...it's not good to make a decision on things like this without asking clearly."
"What decision?"
Vivian suddenly realized that she had misunderstood and Feng Simiao was not prepared to make any decision.
Perhaps because of hormones, the purity of love is no longer her highest priority in life. She is no longer a little girl who can do whatever she wants, she will soon become the mother of Lin Yang's child.
The children are a partnership established with each of them contributing 50% of the capital, and the equity cannot be changed, withdrawn, or cancelled.
At this moment, Vivian was very much like Zhao Xinmei in "Fortress Besieged". After saying bad things about Sun Roujia to her old friend Fang Hongjian, she suddenly realized that the two of them were already married and were a family.
Feng Simiao, who is loved by everyone, is just an ordinary wife at this time, complaining about the troubles of her husband's infidelity.
What happens after talking?
Of course it is "Actually, he is very nice to me."
Vivian suddenly felt upset, and the bowl of mango sago in her hand suddenly became tasteless.
Fortunately, Lin Yang arrived at this time. His tall figure was still dashing, and his face was still so frank and kind.
Weiwei stood up and greeted Lin Yang. Perhaps because of her particularly serious expression, Feng Simiao winked at her and shook his head very lightly.
Of course, Vivian wasn't so tactless. She calmly handed Feng Simiao's hand to Lin Yang, and the three of them walked out of the restaurant together. The car slid silently over, and the driver got out to open the door for them. Lin Yang carefully helped Feng Simiao into the car.
In the eyes of others, they are still a respectable couple. In fact, they are naturally a golden pair in life.
Vivian watched the car drive away, and she couldn't help feeling mean in her heart: She thought she was the only fake one with gold plating, but who knew that their love was also only covered with a thin layer of gold.
She felt a flicker of emotion. The last time she watched them drive off like this was when Feng Simiao insisted on bringing her and Eric together. The four of them had dinner nearby and stayed there until late at night. He walked with her under the shadows of the trees, and she suddenly felt her heart pounding like thunder, and she fled in panic.
At that time, the two pairs of men and women were full of vigor and vitality, and the world seemed to be slowly extending to infinity.
Today, the small courtyard where the four of them had their meal has been demolished, and the dirty and messy street behind it, which used to sell cheap beer and spicy hot pot, has been turned into a clean and bright model block.
So much has happened in less than a year.
She couldn't help but call him.
