No one could persuade her, so now the director's mother stood beside Zibai holding a bowl.
Qian Xingxing was not far from the two of them, so he naturally heard what the director's mother said. He glanced at Xiao Yi, who was already wiping his mouth with a handkerchief, and then heard the director's mother continue:
"Actually, I've told this kid many times that everyone has enough to eat, and he doesn't need to give his share to others." A hint of worry appeared between her eyebrows:
"But this kid is too stubborn. Maybe it's because he's the oldest, so he wants to take on the role of older brother. I feel really bad for him, but there's nothing I can do..."
As she was speaking, the director's mother lowered her head, and Qian Xingxing saw two drops of transparent tears falling into her empty bowl.
"Don't be sad, I'll go talk to him later." Minghui put down his bowl. In fact, this bowl of porridge was not enough for a young man, but the situation in the orphanage did not seem to be good, and the director's mother was under a lot of pressure, so no one said anything.
"It's okay. No need to bother you." Qian Xingxing thought the director's mother would nod in agreement, but he heard a completely different answer: "I know this child's temper. He feels that taking care of his younger siblings is a manifestation of his own self-worth. If you say something to him, it will only make him feel rejected. So it's better not to provoke him."
After saying this, the director's mother sighed softly, then looked at Minghui and said, "If possible, while I'm cleaning, could you please take the children to stay in the room? They can play with toys or read storybooks."
"Okay." Minghui nodded. "Can you do it by yourself?"
"Sure, let me do more while I can still do it." The director's mother nodded. At this time, the children had finished their porridge one after another and put their bowls on the table very obediently.
Minghui and Nanpeng led the children into the house, followed by Zibai and Qian Xingxing. Before closing the door, Qian Xingxing glanced towards the kitchen.
The director's mother went into the kitchen alone with a big pot and quickly closed the door.
"Brother, do you want to go in and take a look too?" A little radish-headed girl with two pigtails appeared out of nowhere, scaring Qian Xingxing.
The little girl had no flesh on her cheeks, was wearing a faded pink dress, and had dirty sandals on her feet.
Qian Xingxing noticed the "also" in her question, so he closed the door, squatted down, picked up the doll, let the little man put his arms around his neck and whispered, "Do you want to go in and take a look too?"
"I do." The little girl whispered in his ear, glancing at the other children. Seeing that no one noticed that she was whispering to the new big brother, she said happily:
"The director's mother said that on the day of our coming-of-age ceremony, we'll be able to go in and eat cake! After that, we'll have a new, beautiful home!"
What's the logic behind this? Qian Xingxing frowned and asked quietly, "What about birthdays? Can't I go in?"
"What is a birthday?" The little girl looked at him confusedly, obviously not knowing the concept of a birthday.
"It's the day you were born."
The two braids shook along with the movement of her head: "I don't know."
Qian Xingxing was stunned for a moment, then realized that it was normal for children in an orphanage not to know their date of birth. Perhaps that was why the director's mother...
The image of the director's mother with red eyes and tears in her eyes suddenly flashed through his mind. How could such a head of family who cared so much about these children not even tell them their birthdays because she didn't know their birth dates?
Maybe there are no conditions to celebrate birthdays, but maybe on each day when you take them in, give the child a bigger apple, or eat an egg...
The little feeling of disharmony that had been ignored crept into his heart unconsciously. He glanced at Zibai standing by the wall, who seemed to be talking to the young boy named Xiaoyi.
"You haven't answered me yet." The little girl reached out and tugged at Qian Xingxing's collar, startling him. Only then did he realize that he had accidentally neglected the child in his arms.
"I do." He touched the girl's head: "But I've already passed the coming-of-age ceremony."
Unexpectedly, his words did not make the little girl look disappointed. The little carrot-head looked at him strangely, and Qian Xingxing felt that there seemed to be a bit of disgust in that look.
Sure enough, the next moment, the little girl muttered, "We can find a way to sneak in! Brother, you are a little stupid."
"..." Qian Xingxing was obviously stunned this time, her eyes even glazed over for a moment, then she opened her mouth and asked, "How did you sneak in?"
"How should I know?" The little girl scratched her braids. "I thought you were an adult and would know how to do it."
Qian Xingxing, who was inexplicably trusted, felt like he was holding a hot potato in his hands, but at this moment he nodded and said calmly: "Okay, sir, think of a solution."
"Okay!" After getting his promise, the little girl immediately let go, jumped to the ground, and ran towards her good friends whimpering.
Qian Xingxing thought she would tell the news to other children, but she simply went back to play with everyone else, as if she had forgotten about it all of a sudden.
On the other side, Zibai was still talking to Xiaoyi. Out of some strange intuition or perception, Zibai always felt that this child named Xiaoyi could definitely give him some clues.
So even though the communication outside this afternoon was not successful, he still found the child as soon as he entered the room.
