042 | (Forty-one) Should we find another owner?
Xie Qingyan ignored Su Xingmao's text message and dozed off at her desk for a while. When the bell rang for self-study, she quickly looked up and peeked towards the back door. Her reaction was so fast that no one knew whether she had fallen asleep or not.
Once she confirmed that no teacher was coming to keep her after school, she immediately dragged Zhou Hanyu and Shen Huaixu to the cafeteria for a meal.
The school cafeteria has many food stalls, but the taste varies greatly. There are only a few truly delicious options, and everyone knows that. If you arrive late or are too slow, you can only watch others' food with envy.
After passing several teaching buildings, she arrived at the cafeteria, panting. While queuing for food, she looked around listlessly. Through the noisy crowd and the shadowy figures, Xie Qingyan could see Su Xingmao two windows away from her. His figure was tall and slender, disappearing into the back of the queue, standing out in the crowd.
Xie Qingyan couldn't help but feel smug. With his snail-like pace as he walked out of the classroom, he was lucky if he could even get a scrap of leftovers.
Xie Qingyan had already sat down and eaten more than half of the meal.
They carried their trays and, at a leisurely pace, sat down at the adjacent table.
Every now and then, a girl would tug at his sleeve, point at him, and whisper, "That's Su Xing Mao."
Xie Qingyan rolled her eyes, and the food she was chewing suddenly got stuck in her throat, making it difficult to swallow. She quickly threw down her chopsticks, picked up her water glass and gulped down a few mouthfuls, sneering coldly.
When we were in school, everyone had a positive view of good students. If a good student was also a little bit good-looking, they were even more outstanding. They could give a speech under the national flag and be regarded as a role model and be admired by everyone.
"You two enjoy your meal, I have to go now." Xie Qingyan left her two close friends behind and went ahead alone.
She didn't plan to go back to the classroom.
Jinzhong is an old campus. Although it is a century-old prestigious school with a strong faculty, its facilities are outdated, its staff is thin, and there are no extra spaces in the dormitories for day students. If you stay at school at noon, you must also be disciplined during the lunch break. You must keep quiet in the classroom and not disturb others.
Xie Qingyan was getting fed up with these tedious school rules. The nearly two-hour lunch break was far more stressful than getting caught using her phone in class…
She simply slipped away to the art building, ran into the art classroom to play games and find some peace and quiet. Xie Qingyan was not a boarding student, and the art building was rarely visited at noon, so this tactic always worked.
As is customary, Xie Qingyan climbed to the second floor, swaggered into the art room, and then it was time for her to have her own personal time.
The art supplies in the art room were scattered, and most art students had free and unrestrained personalities, so their desks had very different styles.
A light dust of leaden gray floated in the air, and the canvases were covered with crisscrossing hatching lines and faded paint marks. Several canvases still had large areas of unfinished color sketched on them.
There was no podium or blackboard; in the center of the main hall was a reclining plaster statue of a woman, plump and pale.
The ivy covering half the wall blocked out most of the light and shadow, which fell into the classroom as fragmented, fleeting glimpses of light. In a beam of light, countless tiny dust particles quietly danced.
As soon as Xie Qingyan sat down, the door latch clicked open again, and dust particles, like shattered light, were struck and danced in the air. The figure in the blue and white school uniform cut through the halo of light and shadow with sharp lines.
She refused to listen, so he had to come to her in person.
Meeting her surprised gaze, Su Xingmao lowered his head and calmly asked, "Why didn't you reply to my messages?"
Xie Qingyan took ten seconds to accept being cornered in the art room by him. She choked on her words, then raised her head defiantly, showing no sign of weakness: "Why should I go just because you tell me to?
Su Xingmao seemed to be stumped by her question. He remained motionless and silent for a long while before finally speaking: "Do you want to go out and play with Zhou Jianyang?"
Xie Qingyan was stunned. She was annoyed by this. She hadn't even seen what was written on the paper, yet they were still accusing her.
Seeing that she didn't answer, he took it as a yes and then asked again, "You think I'm boring, right?"
"Xie Qingyan," Su Xingmao called her name in a deep voice.
The three questions, each uttered with increasing emphasis, gradually became more pressing: "Does the kitten want to find another owner?"
