Chapter 784 Prohibition of Elder Abuse
"Did he come back by himself?" the old man asked again.
Wen Shuyi nodded: "That's right."
"Tsk." The old man glared at Wen Shuyi and said, "The one Yuanmao mentioned before, the one we bumped into at the second son's house, didn't I tell you to find an opportunity to meet her? Didn't you see her?"
"I saw it."
"You saw him?" the old man asked excitedly. "How was it?"
"I think it's great."
"Then let the second brother bring it back! I'm so anxious my hair has turned white! If you have it, why don't you bring it back right away?"
"Then let's talk about this in a bit," Wen Shuyi said, glancing at the old man's hair and reminding him, "Your hair is white because you've reached a certain age."
Downstairs, the table in the dining room was already set with food. When the old man saw Jiang Yuanliang, before his son could even speak, he preemptively said, "Don't come back alone next time!"
Jiang Yuanliang was both amused and exasperated: "Fine, I'll bring people back next time."
The old man paused as he sat down, then half-squatted and looked at Jiang Yuanliang with surprise in his eyes.
Has this kid changed his ways today? He agreed so readily, and even took the initiative himself.
After slowly sitting down, he finally asked, "What? You're not going to argue this time? Didn't you keep denying it when your older brother brought it up last time?"
“The second brother didn’t deny it,” Jiang Yuanmao said, speaking up for his younger brother.
But the old man said, "That doesn't mean he admitted it either. Not admitting it is the same as denying it."
Everyone nodded with wry smiles, going along with the old man's wishes.
The old man looked at Wen Shuyi, trusting his eldest daughter-in-law more than his son: "Shuyi, haven't you met her? How was it?"
Wen Shuyi sat upright, her posture exceptionally elegant. She tilted her head slightly to look directly at the old man and said softly, "I've met him. He's a good person, with his own career, and he's good-looking and has a good personality."
"A career? A successful businesswoman?" the old man asked.
Wen Shuyi smiled and nodded: "I guess so, but it's a small company, it can't compare to ours, but we don't care about that, right? We mainly look at character and appearance."
The old man nodded; the Jiang family didn't care about family background.
"When are you going to bring her back? If you think she's good, set a wedding date as soon as possible. Hurry up, you might still be able to catch the 39 train, otherwise you'll really be 40."
Jiang Yuanliang smiled helplessly and said, "Dad, I'm only two months away from turning 40. No matter how hard I try, it won't be that fast!"
"This is fast? You've been dragging this out for forty years. If I had known it would be this difficult for you, I should have arranged a suitable marriage for you when you were born."
“Dad, don’t rush.” Wen Shuyi spoke up at the right time, bringing the topic back on track: “It’s definitely a good thing. Jingjing is a very good person and very suitable for living together. Yuanmao and I both believe that Yuanliang will be happy with her.”
"However, there is a fact we need to make clear to you."
The three of them straightened their expressions simultaneously. The old man glanced at them and snorted, "What actual situation? What do you need to consider when marrying into our Jiang family?"
"I'll give whatever dowry her family asks for, as long as it's a car, a house, or gold, I won't even blink an eye."
"It's not these fathers, it's..."
"Sister-in-law," Jiang Yuanliang interrupted Wen Shuyi, taking the initiative to say, "I'll talk to Dad."
Wen Shuyi glanced at Jiang Yuanliang, seemingly understanding his thoughts. Jiang Yuanliang's personal statement would better demonstrate his importance and firm determination, so he nodded slightly.
Jiang Yuanliang didn't beat around the bush, since he knew he had to say this sooner or later, so he blurted out, "Jingjing is a few years older than me, has had two children, and they are both adults now."
"What?!"
The old man's voice rose sharply, his eyes widening: "Married?"
"No, she's never been married!" Jiang Yuanliang quickly explained, "She's not married."
"Two children without being married?" The old man was so angry that his voice became hoarse. It was better if they were married!
"Dad, Jingjing's story is complicated. She had a tough time when she was young and married the wrong person. Her son was born before the man died in an accident. She raised three children on her own. She is a very resilient and great mother."
"Three, three?" The old man raised his voice again, "Didn't you just say two?"
"She even picked up an abandoned baby, which shows she's kind-hearted!"
"No way!" The old man slammed his hand on the table, firmly rejecting the idea: "Absolutely not! With your qualifications, you could find any woman in the world, let alone China. Are you out of your mind to find a single mother with three children and then eagerly become her stepfather?"
"Let me tell you, there's no room for discussion on this!"
Jiang Yuanliang persisted, saying, "Dad, I'm not discussing this with you. I'm telling you about Jingjing's existence. I love her very much, and I want to be with her. She is truly a very good and outstanding person."
"She's outstanding, she's kind, she's good in every way, but that has nothing to do with our Jiang family." The old man's attitude was also firm: "But she's not suitable for you. Think about your identity, your status, is it appropriate for you to marry a woman like that?"
"What's wrong with it? Isn't it the best outcome for the two of us to choose each other?"
Seeing the father and son start arguing, Jiang Yuanmao and Wen Shuyi exchanged a glance, signaling that it was their turn to step in.
Jiang Yuanmao spoke first to comfort his father: "Dad, don't get so worked up. In all these years, Yuanliang has never brought up any woman to you so formally. The fact that he did this today is a kind of progress, isn't it?"
"Progress my ass!" the old man cursed angrily. "He's gone a bit too far with this step. What did he do with that step?"
“Dad,” Wen Shuyi followed up, “I was shocked when I first found out about these things, so I made a point of learning more about Shen Jingjing. She’s really a good person. So, if she’s a good person and Yuanliang genuinely likes her, isn’t that enough? I don’t think anything else matters. After all, being with the person you love is the most important thing, since it’s Yuanliang and Shen Jingjing who will be living together in the future.”
"You said the options you arranged for Yuanliang before were all quite good, but Yuanliang didn't like them. Wasn't that just forcing him? It might be fine for a short time, but does that mean he has to spend most of his life with someone he doesn't like?"
"Oh, Shuyi!" The old man couldn't bear to get angry at Wen Shuyi, but he also had some complaints about her: "Whose side are you on? The three of you... this... it's forbidden to mistreat the elderly!"
"Of course I'm on your side. I'm only saying this from your perspective." Wen Shuyi continued, "You see, you used to hope that Yuanliang could get married soon, but he hasn't gotten married yet because he hasn't met someone who is both suitable and likable. Now that he has met someone, you're against it. If this back and forth continues for a few more years, Yuanliang will become an old man."
"Furthermore, Yuanliang only met a woman like this once in forty years, a woman who makes him want to get married. If you cut this off, aren't you afraid that he'll have to wait another forty years for the next one? Or wait until he's eighty to get married?"
