I should be grateful to you both emotionally and logically. Please name your conditions; as long as it's within my ability, I will not refuse.
Duan Chenghong knew that his words had been hurtful; Xiao Jin might not have wanted anything from them.
But for him, nothing was more important than his wife and children.
However, Xiao Jin did not dwell on Duan Chenghong's promise.
Her expression was as cold as ice, and her sharp gaze swept around as if searching for something.
A moment later, she suddenly fixed her gaze on Duan Chenghong: "What's going on?"
Liu Xin and Duan Chenghong were stunned for a moment, and then they realized why Xiao Jin's emotions had suddenly changed.
They were so happy that they forgot about the injuries on their faces.
At this moment, Duan Chenghong and Liu Xin's clothes were disheveled, and they were covered in dust.
Xiao Jin could see clearly that it couldn't have been from working; there were clear shoe prints on Duan Chenghong's legs.
In addition, both of them had varying degrees of redness and abrasions on their faces, which Xiao Jin could tell at a glance were marks left from a fight.
If they were zombies, they would have been dead long ago.
Thinking of this, Xiao Jin's gaze swept around and finally settled on the tightly closed roller shutter door of the noodle shop.
The once ordinary metal door now bore shocking dents, clearly caused by a hard object.
In addition, one of the windows in the noodle shop was broken, and there were glass shards all over the ground. Many of the tables and chairs blocking the entrance were also broken.
Following these clues, Xiao Jin's gaze fell on the supermarket next door after a moment, a look of understanding flashing in his eyes.
Turns out they ran into people looting supplies!
That's true. The couple practically emptied the supermarket. When people go into the supermarket looking for supplies, the first thing they suspect is the store next door.
Thinking about it this way, Xiao Jin even found a target to hurt people.
Her gaze immediately turned cold!
Duan Ziyue, who was standing nearby, was so immersed in the joy of returning home that she didn't notice anything amiss.
Hearing Xiao Jin's words, she quickly crawled out of her mother's arms, cupped Liu Xin's evasive face, and wiped the red marks with her fingertips.
Duan Ziyue asked anxiously, "Mom and Dad, where did you get these injuries on your faces?"
No matter how much her daughter pleaded and begged, Liu Xin remained tight-lipped, refusing to utter a single word. Her eyes were filled with worry and determination. A heavy weight pressed on her heart—an endless concern for the safety of Duan Ziyue and Xiao Jin. After all, in this chaotic and complex world, people's hearts were unpredictable. She was truly afraid that those people's true colors were far more treacherous than they appeared, and that getting involved might implicate the two people she cherished most. Besides, those people had vanished like morning mist, nowhere to be found; what good would it do to pursue them further?
"Mom, are you talking about the people we rescued in the mountains yesterday?" Xiao Jin's voice was clear and firm, without any intention of hiding anything. He keenly sensed the strange atmosphere at home and decided to face the problem head-on, hoping to find a solution.
Seeing this, Duan Ziyue's curiosity and anxiety grew wildly, and she bombarded her with questions one after another: "Mom, what exactly happened? Tell me quickly! We risked our lives to save them yesterday, shouldn't they be grateful?" Duan Chenghong looked at his daughter's inquisitive eyes, and then at Liu Xin's furrowed brows, and finally gave in, slowly recounting the thrilling scene from yesterday.
It turned out that yesterday, they had encountered a group of seemingly lost travelers in the mountains and forests. Disregarding their own safety, they resolutely offered their help and rescued them from their predicament. Unexpectedly, these people showed no gratitude whatsoever. Instead, they quietly left in the dead of night without even saying goodbye, leaving behind only confusion and bewilderment.
Upon hearing this, Duan Ziyue's anger flared instantly. She slammed her hand on the table and angrily rebuked, "These ungrateful wretches! If we had known it would turn out like this, we would have just stood by and watched yesterday, so we wouldn't be so furious now!" Her voice echoed in the room, filled with resentment and indignation.
Liu Xin's expression wasn't much better; a bitter smile played on her lips, and her eyes gleamed with helplessness and frustration. In this world full of unknowns and uncertainties, they were nothing more than insignificant beings, yet they had encountered such a disheartening thing. "Who would have thought that we would run into such a terrible person? What bad luck!" she muttered to herself, her tone a mixture of self-mockery and lamentation at the unpredictability of life.
Time slipped by unnoticed, and it was nearly noon in the blink of an eye. Sunlight streamed through the window, dappling the room, but it couldn't dispel the lingering gloom. After Xiao Jin left, the house seemed even more silent. Everyone harbored their own thoughts, about the good and evil of human nature, about trust and betrayal, about the unknown and challenges of the future… All of this, like the afternoon breeze, gently brushed past, yet left a deep mark.
On that apocalyptic morning, the sky was a gloomy gray, as if even the sunlight feared the desolation and despair of this land. Xiao Jin, the valiant survivor, used his extraordinary skills to clear away the zombies surrounding the humble noodle shop before leaving, temporarily creating a safe barrier for this small area. The outside world, though still fraught with danger, held a rare moment of peace in this small space.
Liu Xin and Duan Chenghong, two fellow survivors in the apocalypse, sat in their noodle shop. Flames danced on the makeshift stove, the kettle bubbling and steaming, a stark contrast to the deathly silence outside. They secretly hoped that since their surroundings were temporarily safe, other survivors might muster the courage to leave their shelter and seek a glimmer of hope. Therefore, when a knock came at the door, they weren't overly alarmed; instead, they felt a sense of anticipation, as if it were the gentle knocking of a door of hope.
