Chapter 570 The Fog Demon's Persistence

Dead silence... a deathly silence as thick as solidified asphalt.

Xiao Jin's consciousness did not seem to be completely asleep; like an undercurrent lurking beneath the ice, a trace of vigilance always hung above the abyss.

Then, it came.

It is not a sound, but a feeling.

A dull, madly malicious tremor, like countless heavy footsteps pounding the bones of the earth, came from a distant abyss.

First it seeps through the cold, thick soil, and finally it permeates the bones and muscles, reaching the soul.

Thump...thump...thump...

Like the ever-growing war drums echoing from the depths of hell! Accompanying them were low chants, like ancient murmurs.

Xiao Jin's eyelashes trembled violently in the darkness! But the next second, all sound vanished into nothingness.

………………

For the next few days, the players mostly stayed huddled in their rooms, waiting for the game to end.

It seemed as if everyone had subconsciously forgotten about the fight that night.

Those who gained the upper hand were not smug, and those who lost still greeted each other with smiles.

The mutated fog demons, however, did not seem to give up, and would occasionally gather groups of infected to attack the base.

Woo-woo-woo!

The air raid siren, sharp enough to tear your eardrums, blared out without warning!

That sharp, desperate, and extremely penetrating sound instantly tore through the stagnant silence of the entire base, like countless steel needles piercing the eardrums and brains of every sleeping person!

The entire underground air-raid shelter was like it had been thrown into a pot of boiling oil! It instantly boiled over!

"Enemy attack! Enemy attack!"

"All combat personnel! Immediately move to defensive positions! Repeat! Immediately move to defensive positions!"

"Non-combat personnel! Get into deep bunkers! Quickly! Quickly!"

"Close the gates for channels A3 and B7! Start the power grid at maximum power!"

The piercing sound of broadcasts, the chaotic footsteps, the terrified cries, the resounding slam of metal gates closing, and the overloaded hum of the power engine...

Countless sounds were forcibly mixed together by the death-defying alarm, forming a huge, suffocating storm of chaotic noise that swept through every passage and assaulted everyone's nerves!

At that moment, Xiao Jin was lying on her back in bed watching a TV series on her tablet, with a plate of grapes on the bedside table next to her! The large, round, purple grapes looked tempting, with glistening water droplets hanging on them.

Moreover, the grapes were chilled when they were stored in the space, and when they were taken out and placed outside, they exuded a cool aura.

Upon hearing the sound, Xiao Jin decisively rolled out of bed, her movements swift and silent, like a cheetah poised to pounce, and she reached the door in a few steps.

In the past few days, the mutated mist demons that came to attack caused some difficulties, but they did not cause much damage to the base. But today is different.

The base's alarms had never sounded like this before, and the soldiers outside were in a state of panic.

When I opened the door, the hallway outside was already in complete chaos.

The panicked survivors screamed like headless flies, stumbling and shoving as they rushed toward the passageway of the deeper bunker, roughly pushed and yelled at by the guards.

The soldiers, fully armed and with their faces painted, looked fierce, like black torrents rushing upstream towards the various elevators and defense points leading to the ground.

The pungent smell of sweat, the terrifying stench of urine, and the cold metallic smell mingled together, making one want to vomit.

"Wen Jin, something's happened. A lot of Fog Ghosts have arrived."

Just as Xiao Jin stepped outside, Yu Liu called him back. He had detection equipment, so he knew what was happening outside.

With this incident at the base, the other players naturally couldn't stay cooped up in their rooms any longer, so one by one they grabbed their weapons and came out.

"Yes, I plan to go take a look." Xiao Jin nodded calmly, and then his figure moved quickly through the gaps between the chaotic crowd and the soldiers' ranks, like a nimble fish.

Her goal was clear: the elevator platform leading to the nearest ground observation point.

Xiao Jin was extremely fast. In no time, he dodged the crowd and ran onto the platform. When he encountered a wall of people, he simply teleported through it.

Before the people next to her could react, they saw a figure flash and disappear.

The elevator platform emitted a heavy hum, carrying the last batch of reinforcements and Xiao Jin, breaking through layers of heavy protective gates and rising rapidly.

When the platform finally came to a stop, the heavy alloy door slid open—

A gust of wind, carrying the heavy stench of blood, gunpowder smoke, charred flesh, and a strange, indescribable sweet and pungent smell, rushed in like the breath of hell! It instantly dispelled all the smells brought up from underground.

But the sight before them made even these battle-hardened soldiers gasp in shock!

Outside the main entrance of the base's massive air-raid shelter, the once spacious and solid buffer plaza has now been transformed into a living hell!

The searchlight's enormous, pale beam of light resembled the angry finger of a god, frantically scanning and cutting through the impenetrable darkness.

Where the beam of light reached, there were countless figures, surging like a rotting tide! Hundreds, thousands! No, even more!

Their clothes were tattered, their limbs were twisted and deformed, their skin was covered in large patches of festering purplish-brown, and their eye sockets were sunken, burning with an inhuman, turbid and insane dark red light!

The most unbelievable thing is...

Even though the poisonous fog has been there for almost a month, these people don't look particularly thin; their exposed skin still appears quite elastic.

So how did these people survive when there was a shortage of food and clothing and most supplies were contaminated with toxins?

No one dared to think about it further.

Now, these infected people have been completely controlled by the Fog Ghosts, and all they feel towards ordinary survivors is hatred and greed!

They charged forward fearlessly, braving the fierce firepower raining down from the base's outer defensive towers, a barrage of metal-like fire!

Large-caliber machine gun bullets easily tore apart and shattered the infected in the front row!

Limbs and torsos mixed with a thick, dark red liquid splattered everywhere, while fragments of internal organs and bone fragments were splashed onto the cold concrete and fortifications like dirty raindrops!

However, the soldiers at the base didn't pay much attention to these infected people. What they were really worried about were the mutated fog ghosts hiding in the crowd, and the large horde of fog ghosts lurking in the fog.

Sure enough, taking advantage of someone leading the way, the shadows within the mist began to move swiftly. Immediately afterwards, large numbers of mist demons burst out from the red mist.

"It's the Fog Demon!!!"

The infected below changed their expression drastically and pointed at the Fog Ghost, shouting.

Even though they had already given up and were completely resigned to their fate, people still couldn't help but feel fear when they saw so many fog ghosts.

The next second, the Mist Demons began their indiscriminate attack. Neither the infected nor the base's troops could escape their claws.

The base commander on the high platform silently clenched his hands, while the other soldiers also looked reluctant.
