Chapter 80 Anomaly Detected

Upon entering, Xiao Jin first saw a long corridor with cold, white light reflecting off the icy metal walls. No one spoke; they simply walked forward with their heads down.

Once inside, Xiao Jin realized that it wasn't just Asians; people of all races were present.

The laboratory is heavily guarded, with armed guards of all ranks, constant overhead cameras, and doors that require verification from time to time.

Now Xiao Jin completely abandoned her thoughts of causing trouble and quietly prepared to become a corpse transporter.

After moving things back and forth all afternoon, Xiao Jin was very curious whether they thought that doing odd jobs was the same as being a researcher.

Despite being a full-fledged researcher in the lab, she insisted on moving corpses, which prevented her from having time to check her surroundings.

Give her a chance, let her know what this lab is researching!

However, once inside the laboratory, the air conditioning above their heads was running continuously, which greatly reduced the stuffiness Xiao Jin felt.

As night falls, the sky becomes as dark as ink, and the stars are hidden behind thick clouds, as if even the horizon is draped in a mysterious veil.

The laboratory lights were turned on one by one, illuminating everything so clearly that no one could hide. Four people walked with heavy steps through the long corridor that seemed to swallow up all silence, and in the blink of an eye, they brought Xiao Jin to a new workroom.

Xiao Jin glanced up slightly and saw a large stove inside the room, with scorching flames inside. Two shirtless men were standing in front of the stove, each holding a long iron hook.

At first glance, the scene was quite terrifying.

At this moment, everyone standing in front of Xiao Jin took off their lab coats, and when they got close to the stove, the hair of the man in front of him even curled up slightly.

The lab coats were thrown into the incinerator one by one, and flames suddenly rose up, turning into blazing fire dragons.

This should be a garbage recycling area. They spent most of the day moving corpses, so their clothes definitely couldn't be brought into the experimental area.

Xiao Jin followed the actions of the people in front of her and threw her clothes in with great cooperation. Before leaving the stove, as she turned around, Xiao Jin's eyes suddenly fell on the ventilation duct above for a second.

I think I just saw something flash by, right there in the pipe.

Without probing further, Xiao Jin continued with her previous actions, her expressionless face deceiving the two workers tending the stove.

Therefore, no one knew about this little incident.

As the door opened and closed, a blast of air mixed with disinfectant and a faint smell of burning rushed in again. The cold air from the air conditioner instantly filled the room, freezing every cell of Xiao Jin's senses, and the scorching heat she had felt by the stove had dissipated.

Having shed his heavy exterior, Xiao Jincai finally saw the true faces of his good colleagues: two men and two women, representing various races including black, white, and yellow.

At this moment, however, they were given a shared color.

The four people had identical expressions, their eyes empty and distant, as if their souls had drifted away from their bodies, and their faces were frozen with the numbness and death of day after day.

When taking a step, the feet are like a ruler, with each step being roughly the same size.

After looking around, Xiao Jin began to adjust her expression and eyes. When she looked up again, her appearance blended perfectly with the group of people, and no one could tell that she was out of place.

With the steps of zombies, the group passed through one checkpoint after another, but in the end they still couldn't escape the pupil verification check. Fortunately, the result was very smooth.

The system does have some conscience after all!

The door in front of him seemed a little different; it was larger than any door Xiao Jin had seen before.

The metal doors slid to the sides, and then a huge space, as intricate as a honeycomb yet orderly, appeared before Xiao Jin's eyes.

On the four walls, doors are arranged closely together. Looking up, tiny figures, no bigger than sesame seeds, walk out of the doors and eventually converge in the hall below.

The hall was filled with rows of tables and chairs, and many researchers like them were holding plates with hot food on them.

As Xiao Jin walked, she subtly surveyed the vast space.

This should be the area where junior researchers operate; behind the wall are the dormitories, and below is the canteen.

Having spent an afternoon with a corpse, Xiao Jin had even figured out how to fake illness if these people really intended to eat without showering.

Following her good colleagues, Xiao Jin and the others walked from the edge of the lobby to the inside, and then entered an elevator. Its interior was simple yet technologically advanced, and the completely transparent shell allowed them to easily see the scene below.

With a soft hum, the elevator slowly moved upwards and finally stopped on a certain floor. The elevator doors opened, revealing a long corridor, with a semi-open design on one side and the researchers' rooms on the other.

They stopped in front of a door; they had arrived at Xiao Jin's dormitory.

As I swiped my card and pushed open the door, a familiar scent wafted towards me.

At first glance, the dormitory has no windows and relies entirely on lights to maintain brightness. The light seems to have been deliberately modulated into a sickly pale color, weakly penetrating the air and illuminating every corner, draping this space in a cold and lonely veil.

The air was thick with the lingering scent of disinfectant, which silently seeped into every breath, giving one the unsettling feeling that they were not in a warm and comfortable space to rest, but in a hospital ward.

The living room was also surprisingly simple and empty. Apart from a lonely sofa, there was nothing else around it. There was no TV, coffee table, or potted plants. There wasn't even a painting on the wall.

Behind this empty living room, a row of five tightly closed small doors stood side by side.

Thank goodness, Xiao Jin was relieved that the laboratory wasn't so ruthless; at least they gave her a single room instead of a bunk bed.

With an environment where she could be alone, it was much easier for her to do whatever she wanted.

After the others had entered their rooms, Xiao Jin headed towards the last door.

The access card was the ID card she carried; it opened with a simple tap. The interior was pretty much what Xiao Jin had imagined.

A single bed with a small bedside table next to it. On the wall stands a table and a simple clothes rack made of steel pipes, on which hang two white lab coats and a set of casual clothes.

The house was thoughtfully equipped with a small bathroom, which was only two square meters. Fortunately, it wasn't a public bathhouse, otherwise Xiao Jin would have seriously considered faking her death.

It's unclear whether Xiao Jin's ID card listed her gender as male back on Earth, or if that's why the system's default gender is also male.
