Day 12: Gathering of Heroes

day 12

"Ah—babababababa."

Xia Ning held her hot coffee and yawned widely.

In order to fully implement the "follow the crowd" action policy, she started jet lag mode and didn't go to sleep until after 8 a.m.

After taking a sip of coffee, Xia Ning drowsily began making a heat-resistant suit, a skill she had learned while browsing the flea market in the garage.

So-called heat protection clothing is more accurately described as cooling clothing.

Basically, you just cut out a vest from sturdy fabric, sew four or five pockets on the front and back, and then stuff pre-frozen ice packs into the pockets, and that's it.

They are similar in function to hand warmers.

Faced with the sudden rise in temperature, people are using all sorts of methods to cope with the situation.

A handheld USB mini fan is nothing compared to that.

Last time Xia Ning went to the water truck at the entrance of the community to get water, she met a young man whose body was covered with fever-reducing patches.

Wow, that's even cooler than driving a Ferrari! People even spontaneously made way for him.

The aunt standing behind Xia Ning was dumbfounded, muttering repeatedly, "What kind of family is this, daring to be so extravagant?"

Then several middle-aged women surrounded the young man and asked him if he had a girlfriend.

What magical realism!

Listening closely, good heavens, the man was none other than the "famous" Donkey Brother Li Le.

Xia Ning was almost certain that Li Le was a player.

Those who have the means would have already moved into luxury villas. Living in Xia Ning's neighborhood, before being punished by her parents, she is probably living alone like her and has made preparations in advance.

With power shortages, many places have resorted to diesel generators, and gas stations have gradually ceased operations. As a vital resource, fuel is strictly controlled and must be used wisely.

The government is currently in the appeal stage, and although entry and exit require registration, it has not imposed strict restrictions on people's travel.

However, given the current situation, even if you were given the option to leave, you wouldn't be able to get out.

I don't dare to drive my private car with the little bit of gas left.

In this weather, people have to stop walking on the main road after a short while.

When Xia Ning read other people's post-apocalyptic works, whether novels or TV dramas, most of them started with looting and vandalism, depicting a chaotic and dark society where people had to carry knives when they went out.

But when Xia Ning looked out the window, the surroundings were quiet, like a ghost town.

When the weather isn't so hot, there are still children playing. Now, everyone basically stays at home or in the underground warehouse. Only when they collect supplies do they appear in a large group like zombies taking to the streets, and then disappear in a large group again.

The water trucks in their community start supplying water at 6:00 AM and stop at 8:00 AM, but they usually finish before 7:50 AM.

Everyone's rushing home to enjoy the air conditioning, so even if there's some friction, they'll just exchange a few words like "What's your building number?" and save their breath for later, when the power comes back on, they'll start arguing online.

Xia Ning found it quite interesting.

With her limited understanding, the government will be creating a large number of jobs for her in just a few days.

If it's too hot to go to work, then we'll work from home. Initially, we'll definitely receive salaries; once cash becomes less valuable, we'll use supplies to offset the cost.

No matter how bizarre the job is or whether it can create value, the first thing they'll do is keep you tied down.

People can be poor, but they must never be idle. If there are too many idle people, public security will definitely be in big trouble.

The current orderly appearance is due to most people observing, but it doesn't mean there aren't many people with ulterior motives.

Xia Ning has more and more free time now, and is spending more and more time thinking.

She thought, no wonder the game's anti-addiction system suddenly stopped working. There were so many new free games in the game library, the TV series she was watching were no longer available for early access, and several popular VIP dramas were now free.

At the time, she naively thought that the programmers had stopped working and there was a bug that they couldn't fix in time.

Many people online shared Xia Ning's idea, and netizens spread the word, quickly looking for loopholes, believing that finding one was a great opportunity.

Then I realized it wasn't a bug at all; it was something the state tacitly approved, or more likely, a government order.

The meaning is very clear: You guys keep saying you want to be lazy and do nothing, go ahead and do whatever you want, just don't cause any trouble for me.

Moreover, they didn't say it outright or issue any announcements, but deliberately let online trolls spread the word, perfectly capturing the common people's desire to get a bargain, especially one they discovered themselves.

After thinking it through, Xia Ning made a decision.

As a model citizen, she chose to obey the will of the state and act in accordance with public duty, deciding to watch ten episodes of his soap opera first.

Tsk tsk tsk.

When it comes to melodramatic stories, Thailand has to be the best.

Look, the third female lead got hit by a car and did a Thomas spin, flying five meters away, rolling three and a half times on the ground, and still managed to drag the male lead to recite 500 words of dialogue without even panting.

Wow! Wow!

Xia Ning was engrossed in watching the melodramatic soap opera, and she didn't miss the 8 PM episodes in the residents' group chat either. She was multitasking, thoroughly enjoying the gossip.

[Homeowners' Chat Group]

Yunyun's Mom from Building 8: Xiaoshu, I heard your family received dozens of bottles of mineral water. Where did you buy them?

-

In the face of water scarcity, Yunyun's mother's words have stirred up a great deal of controversy.

The supermarket owner who sold the water back then is kicking himself; if he had just waited two days, the price could have tripled!

Sure enough, within two seconds, five or six people appeared and tagged Shu Qilan, asking her where she bought the water, how much it cost, and if she could share some with her.

Xia Ning shook her head as she watched; Shu Qilan really wasn't very popular.

We live right across from each other. When I saw her deliver bottled water, couldn't I just ask her about it in person? Or at least we could chat privately.

By insisting on asking in the entire community's residents' group chat, Shu Qilan was put on the spot.
