Day 2: Outdoor Exploration

House number 202.

Xia Ning scavenged pineapple jars, a kitchen knife, bandages, a frying pan, and a raincoat.

House number 201.

They are largely the same.

At first glance, these houses may seem similar in terms of layout, configuration, and decoration, but the details reveal the different lifestyles of their owners.

Room 201 is clearly an otaku's house, filled with comics and figurines, and there's a life-size body pillow of a cartoon girl on the bed.

Xia Ning also found some fan fiction manuscripts on his desk; this guy is a pro.

If no disaster were to strike, these people would continue to live lives that are either boring, interesting, mundane, or open.

The house that now reeks of stench once housed vibrant life.

Xia Ning couldn't help but wonder what kind of reaction someone would have if they stepped into her rented room.

They envy her unrestrained life as an unmarried woman, dislike her lazy lifestyle, and of course, they are more likely to dislike her empty kitchen.

After looting the second and third floors, Xia Ning began heading towards the first floor.

There were clearly zombies wandering around on the first floor. Xia Ning could hear some unintelligible low howls through the stairwell door, and the sound of zombies bumping into things without avoiding obstacles.

Xia Ning gripped the baseball bat tightly in her hand and fearlessly opened the door, only to be met by three bloodied and mangled zombies rushing towards her.

Their movements weren't fast; each of them stretched out their hands and opened their mouths, revealing their yellowed teeth.

After Xia Ning struck them a few times, their bloody heads were completely turned into mud.

Trying to avoid the meat scraps, Xia Ning walked to the front door on the first floor, closed the door, and then dragged a sofa over to block the door.

There are no residences on the first floor, but there is a registration desk, a laundry room, a gym, and a storage room.

Xia Ning found a document at the front desk that read "Vaccination Notice," requiring residents to get vaccinated at a designated location to combat the novel coronavirus.

The back shows the records from the front desk staff: out of 6 households, only 302 chose to get vaccinated; the others did not register.

Because the vaccine is not free, the hospital only provides the service and citizens need to pay for the injection themselves. One dose of vaccine costs 1,000 yuan, and the residents of this cheap apartment are obviously unwilling to pay that amount.

Xia Ning could understand that the others were short of money, but the person she was staying at, 303, who had clearly developed symptoms and was willing to go to the north, also chose to refuse.

Xia Ning pondered for a moment and quickly guessed the reason.

The owner of 303 clearly knew some inside information. He probably knew that the hospital's vaccines were useless and that injections would not help at all. He believed that so-called preventative vaccines were mostly a way for private pharmaceutical companies to make money.

How could capitalists let go of money from the dead?

Xia Ning thought to herself that there was no need to explore the hospital; it was probably full of zombies, and she wouldn't find any useful medicine there.

The only way to get the serum is to go to the research institute.

There was some change in the laundry room, but it was useless in this situation.

Two muscular zombie men are hiding in the gym, offering Xia Ning no surprises whatsoever.

The warehouse was mostly filled with cardboard boxes, cleaning tools, and some bed sheets and duvet covers...

Xia Ning heard that guns are not banned in the West and wanted to find a gun, but unfortunately, there were none in the warehouse.

She suppressed her nausea and searched the zombies' bodies, but couldn't find any guns.

I only found half a pack of cigarettes, expired chewing gum, face powder, lipstick, wallet, condoms, and several unusable cell phones.

Come to think of it, why would someone with a gun be left here?

After checking all the apartments, it got dark.

Xia Ning returned to the 3rd floor, and found that room 303 was the cleanest.

She was used to having free access to supplies, and suddenly having to be frugal was a bit of a shock.

For dinner, Xia Ning ate two packets of instant noodles with mineral water, opened a can of yellow peaches, and then fed her younger sister some dog food.

The first day passed uneventfully.

Day 2

As soon as the alarm clock rang, Xia Ning immediately opened her eyes, turned it off, and chased away her little sister who was lying on her stomach.

As dawn broke, she had lived another day.

Xia Ning felt heartbroken when she saw that she had 2310 survival points. She could only console herself: having so many survival points was just for buying skill cards. It would be just as frustrating to upgrade a skill but not be able to use it.

With a stamina value of 175, Xia Ning didn't know if the 5-point drop was due to radiation or because she hadn't showered yesterday, causing a decrease in cleanliness.

At least the Misty Town had a poison debuff warning, but this place has none of that, focusing on a subtle and gradual approach.

Regardless, out of caution, Xia Ning still gave herself a vial of [Basic Detoxifier]. She wouldn't rush to add the nutrient solution; she'd see how she felt tomorrow.

As for the younger sister.

Judging from its shiny kettle-like appearance, it's probably unaffected.
