Xia Ning was no stranger to loneliness and conflict. She stroked the cat with one hand and covered her mouth with the other, yawning.
The further north you go, the colder it gets.
Xia Ning pulled out a sweater and put it on; she seemed to have heard the sound of a helicopter last night.
She looked down at the car's navigation system but still couldn't find the research institute; however, she did see a hospital.
A small square, nestled in the forest.
Something unusual must be going on.
Xia Ning immediately decided to go and explore.
She changed into her outdoor gear, packed it away, slung her emergency bag over her shoulder, tucked a gun into her pocket, and gripped her trekking poles as she headed toward a small hospital in the remote wilderness.
An hour later.
Xia Ning arrived at a single-story house covered in vines. There were no signs on it, and it blended into the wilderness, like an abandoned building.
Surrounded by tall trees, Xia Ning probably wouldn't have thought there was a hospital here if she hadn't had a map and was driving by.
In fact, it shouldn't even be called a hospital.
Its existence seems to be solely for self-preservation.
After Xia Ning went inside, she found neither people nor zombies; the first floor was decorated with agricultural products as a smokescreen.
She used the ultimate lock pick on its last attempt and opened the door to the basement.
Upon reaching the second basement level, Xia Ning finally saw various enclosed rooms and laboratories, but they were all deserted.
There were no sophisticated instruments or research materials in sight, only empty spaces, empty shelves, empty tables and chairs, empty test tubes...
The place was deserted, completely different from the research institute Xia Ning had imagined.
Fearing some hidden danger, she frequently took out her car.
Surprisingly, there was nothing there.
No doctors, no patients, no government agencies, no death laser beams...
The deserted atmosphere even disappointed Xia Ning.
Little sister: "Meow~"
It started scratching at the corner of a table.
Xia Ning: "Are you hungry?"
My little sister is scratching and grabbing.
Xia Ning: "Are your paws itchy?"
Little sister: "Meow!"
Xia Ning: "Do you need to pee?"
My little sister was meowing as she scratched.
Xia Ning: "..."
After a moment's thought, Xia Ning lifted the table, sawed off the table legs, and successfully retrieved a voice recorder from inside.
Xia Ning gave her younger sister a thumbs up: "We'll have dried fish tonight."
She turned on the recorder, and a strange male voice came through.
"I'm infected, and I don't have long to live. My body hasn't shown any complications, but my mind has changed. I can't face death calmly. I've been working on research day and night, feeling anxious and nauseous... We've tried everything, but the results are hopeless... There's no cure for the zombie virus... It shouldn't exist on this planet... If humanity is destined to be extinct, then my death is insignificant..."
