Chapter 19 The Third Mental Hospital
Secret
There is something wrong with this information.
Gu Nian is a psychiatrist himself, so he is very familiar with the symptoms of various mental illnesses and the corresponding medications, and he also knows the prices of most medicines.
There was nothing wrong with the patients' medications in the medical records; some of the drugs were even imported. The problem was the cost of treatment. The cost of treatment for these patients was far too low.
If the charging standards were like this, the hospital would have closed down long ago.
Gu Nian read through the files one by one and discovered another commonality among these patients: most of them were financially disadvantaged and had unhappy families or marriages. However, this situation wasn't particularly unusual in a psychiatric setting.
After putting the documents away, Gu Nian walked out of the office.
As she passed the nurses' station, Gu Nian heard the sound of someone chewing something. Turning to look, she saw a nurse there, eating something. She was quite pretty, appearing to be a normal person, with no apparent deformities.
Noticing Gu Nian looking over, the nurse grinned, revealing rows of sharp teeth stained with blood and uneaten red meat. The pretty nurse lifted a finger from the table, tilted her head, and said, "Expert Gu, would you like some? This is delicious."
Gu Nian: "No, I'm not hungry."
The nurse couldn't help but say with regret: "Okay then." Then she put the severed finger into her mouth, continuing to make the "crunch" sound, with a look of enjoyment on her face.
Gu Nian thought she probably knew where the missing patients had gone. She walked over to the nurse, pointed at the remaining severed fingers on the table, and shook her head. "These aren't tasty enough. The best meat should be the one or two that's dear to my heart. They're the most delicious."
The nurse's eyes lit up as she nodded in agreement, then revealed a longing expression. "It's a shame we can't even get to eat that delicious meat. Even Director Zhou can't get to eat it. Expert Gu is indeed someone specially invited by the dean, and he's an expert on food."
Gu Nian finally took away a ring from one of the broken fingers, wiped it carefully and put it in his pocket, then began to make rounds under the title of expert.
Following Qi Kai's advice, Gu Nian reviewed the files and ultimately selected five patients who might be the core of the contamination. After rounds, she discovered that three of them had disappeared. Coming out of the last ward, Gu Nian ran into Director Zhou, who had returned from nowhere.
Director Zhou's belly seemed to have grown even bigger, and the limbs supporting his body seemed even thinner and longer. Seeing Gu Nian coming out of the ward, he looked inside with interest and asked, "What do you think of the patients in this ward, Expert Gu?"
Gu Nian shook his head: "Not yet, continue the treatment."
Director Zhou nodded, his long, slender hands embracing his ample belly. "Well, quite a few patients are being discharged today, so let's treat this one first."
Gu Nian nodded, and the two walked forward side by side.
As they turned a corner, Gu Nian's eyes were drawn to a framed photo on the wall. It was a picture of a middle-aged man with a square face. Below it was an introduction: "He's the director of the Third Mental Hospital." The introduction was filled with mostly flattering words for the director.
A self-made businessman, whose wife suffered from mental illness, established a mental hospital as one of his first acts after striking it rich. Inspired by his own financial difficulties, the hospital was opened exclusively to patients from impoverished backgrounds, charging a minimal fee for treatment. The introduction also cites several prominent media reports.
Director Zhou noticed Gu Nian's gaze and laughed, saying, "Our dean is truly a kind person, Expert Gu, don't you think?"
Gu Nian retracted his gaze and smiled. "A hospital can't be run by just one director. The hospital's success today is inseparable from the contributions of Director Zhou and everyone else."
Director Zhou burst into laughter, seeming to be quite pleased with Gu Nian's compliment.
After Director Zhou left with her big belly, Gu Nian's expression turned cold. She glanced at the man with a kind smile in the photo, turned around and went to Zhong Xingchi and Song Tian's ward.
When he opened the door, he saw Zhong Xingchi half leaning on the bed, swinging his legs and eating a banana. Song Tian, on the other hand, looked pale, having obviously been attacked by the magic sound.
Seeing Gu Nian come in, Zhong Xingchi sat up from the bed, pushed the fruit plate and said, "Come and try it. You know what, this hospital is really good. There are fresh fruits to eat." Seeing that Gu Nian didn't move, he added, "Don't worry, I checked everything. There is no problem with these fruits. They are delicious."
Gu Nian shook her head and didn't go to get the fruit. After thinking for a while, she asked Song Tian, "You've lived here for a few days. What do you think of it? I mean, when nothing happened."
Song Tian recalled and said, "Actually, before the incident, this place was pretty good. The meals were nutritious, and there were desserts and fruits after meals. There were also nurses who took care of me every day. Sometimes I felt like I wasn't in a hospital, but in a high-end nursing home."
"But there is a problem. The management here is too strict. The time for eating, sleeping and activities is fixed. You have to go back to the room when it is time to take medicine, and there will be roll call every night. Otherwise, I would like to stay here." Song Tian looked bitter when he said this. At the beginning, he was not prepared and was forced to take some medicine. He didn't know if it would be okay.
Gu Nian asked, "Have you taken the medicine this time?"
Zhong Xingchi said, "No." He reached under the pillow and took out a few white pills. "These are what we two secretly hid just now."
Song Tian quickly asked, "Doctor Gu, do you think this medicine is okay?"
Gu Nian took the pill and looked at it carefully, then shook his head: "There are too many similar pills. I can't recognize it just by looking at this one. It would be better if it had the outer packaging."
Song Tian also knew that it was unlikely that he could recognize the pill just by looking at it. He was thinking about going to the hospital for a checkup when he got back. Suddenly, he remembered something and slapped his thigh and said, "I remember!"
He quickly said, "I've tried to escape several times before. I almost got caught once, so I temporarily hid in an old man's ward. There was a lot of trash under his bed, and there seemed to be a medicine box in it. But I was so busy hiding at the time that I didn't notice what was written on it."
Although I don’t know if this is what they are looking for, it is still a clue.
As they were discussing, Qi Kai came over, pushing a cleaning cart. After coming in, he took away the tools on it and placed a stack of documents underneath.
"I went to the archives room and found the information of the hospital staff. I haven't found any problems yet. You can take a look too." Qi Kai distributed the information to everyone.
Zhong Xingchi flipped through a few copies and said, "There's really nothing wrong with them. They're all doctors who graduated from professional colleges, have high salaries, their parents are still alive, and they have wives and children. It seems unlikely that they could be the core of the contamination."
Song Tian, standing by, tsk-tsk-tsked, "I wish I were that rich. You didn't see that parking lot full of luxury cars. They really are rich."
Gu Nian raised her head: "Are they all luxury cars?"
Song Tian scratched his head. "It's a bit of an exaggeration to say they're all luxury cars, but most of them are indeed quite expensive, and the anti-theft systems are also very good. I can't even steal one and run away."
Gu Nian directly took the remaining information in front of her. She looked through it very quickly as if she had a precise target, and her expression became more and more solemn.
Zhong Xingchi was about to ask when Qi Kai stopped him, and they waited quietly.
After reading the last piece of information, Gu Nian looked at the three people and said, "I have a guess, but it still needs final confirmation."
The last link is also the most critical one.
Qi Kai asked directly: "How do we need to cooperate with you?"
Gu Nian said, "I need to go to the ward where Song Tian hid before and get those medicine boxes. If I'm not mistaken, that old man should be the teacher of the octopus monster."
"The other party may know the secret of the hospital."
The pollution was still spreading, and time was urgent. Qi Kai didn't ask any more questions and said directly: "I will go with you. Time is running out. As the pollution spreads, the core of the pollution will become stronger and stronger."
Zhong Xingchi and Song Tianze said, "Then we will cover for you."
With that, the two of them ran out of the ward, shouting as they ran towards the outside of the inpatient department. Hearing their movements, many patrolling monsters followed them out and were attracted away.
After there was no more noise outside, Gu Nian and Qi Kai came out and went straight to the fifth floor.
Unfortunately, there was another monster in the corridor. It was the octopus monster that Gu Nian and the others had the most contact with. At this moment, the octopus monster was lying at the door of a ward. One tentacle pushed the door open, and the other tentacle carried a tray of food inside.
Soon, the plate of things was thrown out, and an old man roared: "Get out, get out of here, I'm not your teacher!"
The octopus monster seemed enraged, its tentacles dancing wildly and slamming against the door with a loud bang. However, the people inside remained unmoved.
Gu Nian’s guess was correct, the person locked up inside was indeed the octopus monster’s teacher.
Qi Kai said: "I'll go and lead it away, and then we'll meet in the ward."
Qi Kai deliberately made a noise in the corridor, and sure enough, the octopus monster was quickly attracted. After the octopus monster chased Qi Kai away, Gu Nian came down the stairs from the upper floor and entered the corridor.
When he arrived at the door of the ward, Gu Nian noticed the plate of things that had been thrown out. It was raw meat.
Half an hour later.
Zhong Xingchi and Song Tian had been taken back to the ward, and Qi Kai had also shaken off the octopus monster, taken a detour, and returned to the ward under the pretext of cleaning.
But this time, there were two more monsters guarding the ward door.
As the three of them were anxiously waiting, they heard Gu Nian's voice coming from outside: "I heard the patient escaped, so I came to see what happened. This is the director's instructions."
Soon, the door was pushed open and then closed again.
Gu Nian walked in and whispered, "There's something wrong with this mental hospital. They're admitting patients under the guise of charity, but secretly they're involved in the organ trade."
"What those patients take are not medicines, but nutritional preparations."
