Li Xianlai went back and forth several times before Xu Nuo finally finished watering the vegetable garden. Her eyes sparkled as she looked at the garden, hoping that a bunch of food would soon emerge from the yellow soil.
Her tall figure stood in the light, blocking the scorching sun. A few stray hairs fell across her forehead. She reached out and tucked them behind her ear, whispering, "Let's go inside. It's too hot outside."
Xu Nuo hummed in agreement and let him lead her inside.
The yard seemed to have been specially renovated; the corner of the wall that had been smashed had been repaired, and the pebbles and sawdust on the ground had been cleaned up.
Li Xian's house used to be dilapidated and small, and the kitchen door was drafty. Now the door has been replaced with a new one, the windows have been nailed shut, and there is a blue printed thermos on the table, as well as a new set of bowls and chopsticks.
It was exactly the same as the one Xu Nuo used at home, obviously specially bought for her by Li Xian.
Seeing that she was staring at those things and seemed a little nervous for some reason, Li Xian tugged at the hem of his clothes with his fingertips. Just as he was about to speak, he heard Xu Nuo exclaim in surprise, "How come they're so big?"
Xu Nuo held the bowl and looked it over, noticing that it was a size larger than the one she used at home. She assumed that Li Xian had bought a larger size, but she never expected that he had deliberately bought a larger size.
Xu Nuo would only eat half a bowl of food each time, so Li Xian picked out a large one from the supply and marketing cooperative.
After putting down the bowl, Xu Nuo walked to the other side of the kitchen, where there used to be an empty shelf, now filled with salt, sugar, oil, flour, and most surprisingly, a brand new, unopened box of malted milk powder.
Xu Nuo turned to him with a smile and asked, "How much stuff did you buy?"
The water boiled, bubbling away. Li Xian carried the thermos over to pour some water, saying in a low voice, "Not much."
His gaze fell on the cascading hot water, and his lips unconsciously tightened.
He didn't feel like he was missing anything when he was alone, but after Xu Nuo stayed here for two days, he realized that he was missing everything.
I was afraid she would be hungry, afraid she would be cold, afraid she would feel wronged here.
The day he took her back, he went to the supply and marketing cooperative and bought a bunch of food, household items, and all sorts of other things. The sales clerks were shocked and thought he was there to buy wedding items.
I've never seen him buy wedding items like this before.
People found it strange that someone who looked like a poor, shabby young man was so generous with his money.
Li Xian was tall and stood out conspicuously by the stove. Xu Nuo, having nothing else to do, skipped over to open his door and discovered that the once quiet room was now filled with many things.
The crossbows on the wall were all put away, and dried grass to repel mosquitoes was hung up.
A pure white mosquito net was placed on the bed to keep out mosquitoes in the summer.
Li Xian's bed is made of solid wood. Now, there is a cotton quilt under the mattress on the hard bed board. There is a lot of cotton used. It feels better than the bed that Xu Nuo has at home. There is also a slightly thinner soft quilt on top.
The quilt doesn't look like it came from a supply and marketing cooperative; Li Xian must have bought it on the black market.
Xu Nuo reached out and poked the new pillow, then turned to look at the things on the table.
New towels, new cups, new toothbrushes, and a round mirror and comb in a plastic case, pressed under a bar of soap.
Neatly placed on the corner of the table, quiet and warm.
The half-open door was pushed open completely, and Li Xian walked in. He glanced at Xu Nuo and asked in a low voice, "Is there anything you need?"
The way he asked it made it sound like she was going to live here permanently. Xu Nuo reached out and poked his arm, jokingly saying, "Anyone who didn't know better would think you were decorating your wedding room."
