Chapter Seventy-Nine Entering the Village

The two followed Li Hong and walked a short distance before they saw a bean field. Several villagers were gathered in the middle, talking about something. They all turned around when they heard Li Hong call out.

Li Hong said, "I went over to call for help."

Xu Nuo nodded, and Li Hong returned shortly after, bringing Luo Chen with her.

Xu Nuo got lost in the mountains a few days ago and then went straight back to the city, so the two haven't met yet.

Upon seeing her, Luo Chen couldn't help but feel a little excited, yet his eyes also betrayed a hint of guilt.

There was a woman in this Luxian village who, after being rescued from drowning, ruined her reputation and, in tears, drank pesticide from the production team and committed suicide.

Although Li Xian kept the matter well hidden and no rumors had been heard so far, and presumably no one else knew, Luo Chen still felt guilty.

After they walked a little further away, Luo Chen asked her in a low voice, "Are you alright?"

"It's okay."

Luo Chen carefully observed her expression and, seeing that her face was unpredictable and showed no sign of sadness or distress, breathed a sigh of relief and said, "I had no choice that day. I thought Li Xian was familiar with the mountains."

He hesitated to speak, "I just went to see him, but don't worry, nobody knows about this. You don't need to worry about ruining your reputation, and besides, I don't think Li Xian is the type to go around like this..."

Xu Nuo interrupted him and said in a low voice, "Brother Luo Chen, don't worry. Li... Li Xian is a very good person. He saved me and didn't do anything to me. Don't worry."

This had always been a thorn in Luo Chen's side, and now that the person involved had personally brought it up, he finally felt better and nodded, "That's good, that's good."

"By the way, Li Xian said my sister injured her leg. How is she now?"

Luo Chen said, "She injured her leg, but it's not serious now. She's very worried about you and has been wanting to go to the city to see you, but she's been busy with farm work these past few days and her injured leg makes it inconvenient for her. If you're not in a hurry, why don't you go to the commune canteen to see her?"

Upon hearing that Xu Yan was at the commune canteen, Xu Nuo asked curiously, "Can she still work with her injured leg?"

Luo Chen nodded: "Yes, the captain asked Su Mei to go and help as well."

"Alright, then I'll go find Xu Yan. By the way, this time it's Comrade Su Zhao who needs to see you."

Su Zhao had been standing to one side. When he saw Xu Nuo waving at him, he quickly went over, smiled at Luo Chen, and extended his hand: "Hello, Comrade Luo Chen, I am Su Zhao."

Although Luo Chen and Su Zhao did not know each other, they had heard of each other before. Luo Chen was full of doubts and wondered why this person would come all the way here. He immediately asked, "I wonder what business Comrade Su Zhao has with me?"

Su Zhao looked troubled, but in reality, he found it difficult to speak: "Could we talk privately?"

Luo Chen nodded.

Li Hong went back to work, and Xu Nuo walked to the commune canteen by herself.

The cafeteria was very close, and Xu Nuo arrived in no time. Xu Yan was sitting on a chair, busy with something, and was both surprised and delighted to see Xu Nuo.

A pair of eyes were fixed on her, seemingly wanting to say something but holding back.

Xu Nuo knew what she wanted to ask, so she leaned closer and whispered, "You get back to work, and I'll explain later."

It was almost lunchtime, and Xu Nuokan and Xu Yan were still busy, so they decided to go to Li Xian's place. Anyway, Li Xian wouldn't eat at the commune canteen, so he should be back soon.

Li Xian lived closest to the foot of the mountain. He didn't encounter anyone along the way, only the rustling wind and the occasional birdsong.

Xu Nuo walked slowly and leisurely. Just as she was about to turn into the side road, someone suddenly pulled her back.

There have been plenty of dirty deeds in the mountains, and Xu Nuo was startled when she heard a familiar voice: "It's me."

Li Xian looked like he had just finished work; he was still wearing that tattered jacket. He looked down at her, his lips pursed, his eyes deep and foggy.

She said happily, "How did you know I would come looking for you?"

Li Xian didn't answer, but asked her in a low voice, "Why are you here?"
