Chapter Twenty-One: He's Sick

Xu Nuo turned around happily, but was startled: "Li Xian, what's wrong with you?"

She had never seen him like this before.

Even though he was severely injured, he remained as stubborn as a rock. Now his face was extremely pale, with the ashen look of someone who had been ill for a long time, and his lips were pale and purplish.

Xu Nuo felt that he looked so fragile, as if he might die at any moment.

Li Xian, his eyes red, leaned against the door, barely managing to stand, and spoke with difficulty, "You...how could you..."

He thought that once Xu Nuo returned to the city, she would never come back to this place.

Xu Nuo stood on tiptoe and reached out to touch the forehead, but he leaned back to avoid it and lost his balance, falling straight backward.

Xu Nuo quickly reached out to pull him, and he pulled her to the ground with him.

Li Xian gritted his teeth and reached out to protect her head.

Xu Nuo took the opportunity to reach out and touch his forehead.

It's so hot.

"You have a fever." She got up and reached out to help him, but he was already nearly unconscious and she couldn't move him.

"Li Xian, Li Xian." Xu Nuo patted his face, but he didn't react at all.

The burning was terrifying. Xu Nuo was afraid something might happen, so after thinking for a moment, she pried open his mouth and placed her hand on it.

One drop, two drops, three drops...

Li Xian felt a touch of coolness fall into his burning throat, followed by a warm sensation that spread throughout his body, as if he had taken some kind of magic pill. His pain vanished instantly, replaced by a lightness and comfort he had never experienced before.

After a while, he opened his eyes.

Xu Nuo stared at him nervously, her face pale, and asked anxiously, "Are you alright?"

Li Xian's gaze fell on her hand, examined it for a while, then shook his head, his voice returning to its original tone: "It's nothing."

Xu Nuo breathed a sigh of relief, her mind went blank, and her body went limp as she collapsed.

Li Xian caught her, his voice deep: "What's wrong?"

Xu Nuo shook her head weakly: "I'm fine, just a little dizzy."

So sleepy.

Li Xian helped her up, reaching out to touch her forehead. She didn't have a fever, but her complexion was very bad. His gaze then fell on her hand, and he hesitated before speaking, "You..."

Xu Nuo looked up at him sleepily, her eyes still misty and sweet. He swallowed hard, but ultimately didn't ask.

He shook his head: "It's nothing."

Li Xian's gaze fell on his fingers, his lips pressed tightly together in a cold, hard line.

Before retrieving the body from the water, he took off the handkerchief to avoid soiling it, only to find that the originally deep, bone-revealing wound had been reduced to a small, shallow red mark.

It healed in just one day.

And when he returned the next day, there was a red bean sprout outside his door, covered with bean pods.

He stared at it silently for a long time before carefully stepping over it, afraid of tripping.

He didn't want to find out what her secret was, but he was afraid that her innocent nature would not be able to hide it from someone with ulterior motives.

After a while, Li Xian asked her, "Are you having nightmares again?"

Her overwhelming drowsiness subsided a little, and she shook her head.

Strangely enough, I haven't had any more nightmares since I went back.

A hint of warmth appeared in Li Xian's silent eyes, his cold, hard lips softened, and he said softly, "That's good."

Xu Nuo felt that his expression was a little strange, but she couldn't quite put her finger on it. After a while, she asked him, "How did you get so sick?"

Li Xian didn't answer. Seeing her weak and powerless appearance, his eyes darkened. He picked her up and placed her on the edge of the bed. He then took out a package of oil paper from the drawer and handed it to her. Xu Nuo reached out and took it.

It's a packet of rock sugar.

She picked up a piece and put it in her mouth, not letting him off the hook: "You still haven't told me why you're so sick."

He looked like he was about to die.

His eyes paused for a moment, then he said softly, "There was a bit of a breeze at night."

"Did you go into the mountains again late at night?"

His eyes were lowered, and his voice remained very soft: "No."

After resting for a while, Xu Nuo felt less dizzy, so she stood up, walked to the door, brought in the small basket, and showed it to him like a treasure: "Look, this is something good, it was made by Xu Yan."

Li Xian's gaze lingered for only a moment before settling elsewhere: "No need."

Xu Nuo glared at him: "What do you mean you don't need it? You saved me and even helped me get rid of the ring. Yes, I haven't had any dreams since then."

She had clearly forgotten that night when she came back, and how she had nightmares that woke her up crying. It was only because she lost the ring that she stopped having nightmares.

Li Xian's gaze remained indifferent; he still refused and shook his head.

Xu Nu pouted and then recounted the reasons for accepting his offer: "You also gave me a lot of quail eggs."

"Um."

"What? Hurry up and come here, I haven't eaten yet, I'm hungry." If persuasion doesn't work, then let's get to work.

Xu Nuo reached out and grabbed his sleeve, trying to pull him away, but couldn't. She turned back and said, looking quite aggrieved, "I'm dizzy."

Li Xian's fingertips trembled, and he moved.

When they went to the kitchen, Li Xian went to boil water, while Xu Nuo sat on the small wooden table to wait. As she waited, she asked him, "Have you seen the red beans I planted?"

He nodded.

"Am I amazing?" she said smugly, her eyes crinkling with laughter.

He nodded, "That's impressive."

The way she planted them wouldn't have made them grow at all, let alone have the pods sprout up overnight.

Seeing that Li Xian showed no surprise whatsoever, as if her red bean seedling was meant to grow that way, Xu Nuo asked curiously, "Have you ever grown red beans before?"

He nodded.

Xu Nuo asked curiously, "It was planted in just a few days?"

Li Xian shook his head.

The seedlings need to be soaked in water until they emerge, then planted in soil. After planting, pests need to be removed and fertilizer applied. It will take several months for the seedlings to bear fruit.

He said, "It will take several months."

"Then why aren't you surprised that the red beans I planted are growing so fast?"

He turned his head and asked very seriously, "Why?"

Xu Nuo raised her eyebrows smugly and said, "Because I'm a fairy, I have fairy powers."

Li Xian smiled and nodded seriously: "Mm."

You believe that?

He nodded.

You really believe that?

Xu Nuo looked at it intently, and Li Xian nodded, his expression serious.

She frowned at him, her voice sweet and soft: "You idiot."

You believe even this?

Li Xian smiled silently, said nothing, picked up the boiling water to scald her bowl, and remembering that she was terribly afraid of getting burned, he scalded another bowl, alternating between the two to cool her down.

He brought the water to her.

"Aren't you hungry?"

Xu Nuo wasn't actually hungry, but under Li Xian's watchful gaze, she picked the smallest purple jade dumpling and nibbled on it in small bites.

"Which one do you want to eat?" she asked him.

He shook his head. Xu Nuo had expected this. Just as he was about to speak, she swiftly picked up a piece of pastry and stuffed it into his mouth.

Li Xian felt hot water being poured over his head, and his face flushed red instantly. She was at it again.

The pastries that have already been eaten are sweet and soft, and have a familiar aroma.

Xu Nuo sat back down, puffed out her cheeks, and glared at him: "Why are you being so fussy about eating?"

She scolded him, but for some reason his face, which had just cooled down, felt hot again.

Xu Nuo said, "You saved me once, took me to throw away the ring in the middle of the night, and gave me a lot of quail eggs. What's wrong with eating a few pieces of cake? How can I dare to ask you for help again or take anything from you after this?"

Li Xian didn't speak, but listened silently, his thumb and forefinger rubbing together.

It seems that this can dispel certain inappropriate thoughts.
