Sun Xinyi carried a soy milk in one hand and a steamed bun and a fried dough stick in the other.
Her mother and sister each carried breakfast, and the three of them walked into the house in the chilly morning air.
This is a dilapidated bungalow located in the suburbs of Shanghai.
The surrounding area was desolate, with a patch of overgrown grass next to the house, and the occasional howl of wild dogs could be heard, making it seem particularly bleak.
Sun Xinyi frowned, feeling somewhat helpless.
Life was tough for the family; the father, Sun Jian's, gambling addiction had plunged them into hardship.
After entering the house, she placed breakfast directly on the table.
"Dad, breakfast is on the table, go ahead and eat."
Looking up, he saw Sun Jian kneeling in front of Lin Yuan, his forehead pressed against the cold ground, his hands clenched tightly, and his face full of remorse.
His voice was choked with sobs as he poured out all his regret.
"Lin Yuan, I know I was wrong! I'll never gamble again, I swear! If I gamble again, may I die a horrible death!"
Lin Yuan stood to the side, arms crossed, his eyes filled with disdain and contempt.
He smirked, a mocking expression on his face.
"Sun Jian, I'm sick and tired of hearing you say that. Every time you lose all your money, you pull this same thing again. Then, the next time you win, you forget who you are!"
Sun Jian's body trembled slightly. He looked up at the three people who had just entered, his eyes full of pleading.
"Lin Yuan, I really am different this time. My wife and children are here, and I know I can't go on like this anymore. I beg you, give me a chance."
Lin Yuan snorted coldly, stepped forward, and looked down at Sun Jian.
"Opportunity? You think you still have a chance? You've gambled away your entire fortune and owe so much money. Do you think you can solve everything by simply saying you'll stop gambling?"
Sun Xinyi stood aside, watching her father and Lin Yuan confront each other, her heart filled with mixed feelings.
She bit her lip.
Dad, why can't you change?
It's always like this; it always disappoints us.
She couldn't help but say, "Brother Lin Yuan, my dad really wants to change this time. He... he only owed you money because he had no other choice."
Lin Yuan turned his head and looked at Sun Xinyi, a complex emotion flashing in his eyes.
“Xinyi, I’m not an unreasonable person. If your dad could really change, I wouldn’t be forcing him like this. But if he disappoints me again, I really can’t help you anymore.”
Upon hearing Lin Yuan's words, Sun Jian grasped at a straw and immediately kowtowed.
"Lin Yuan, I will definitely change, I will definitely change! I can't let my wife and children down again."
Sun Xinyi felt a pang of sorrow as she watched her father kowtow.
She stepped forward and gently helped her father up.
"Dad, don't be like this. We'll help you change. You must keep your word and not let us down again."
Sun Jian looked up at his daughter, his eyes filled with tears.
"Xinyi, Dad is so sorry. I promise I'll change this time, I promise I'll change!"
"Ding, the 'High-Ranking Person' quest has been triggered."
"Pay off the Sun family's debt within three hours, and you'll be rewarded with a stock market tip."
Lin Yuan stood aside, listening to the system's voice.
Seeing this scene, I felt a little sorry for her.
He sighed, turned and walked out the door, leaving behind the words: "I hope you can really change this time."
Sun Xinyi also looked at her father.
"Dad, this time we must work together to make this family better again."
Sun Jian nodded in agreement, a resolute glint in his eyes.
"I will definitely change this time, for your sake and for my own."
This move successfully won the sympathy of Sun Xinyi and the other two.
Lin Yuan scoffed at this, saying that one shouldn't believe a gambler's words.
It would be best if he could change his ways. He arranged for him to work in the South China Sea, away from Shanghai.
On the other hand, he had already made up his mind that if Sun Jian dared to gamble again, he would have his bodyguard Li Tianyi teach Sun Jian a lesson.
It would be best to demonstrate all eighteen of the most brutal tortures of the Qing Dynasty.
He refused to believe that Sun Jian wouldn't learn this lesson.
At this moment, Sun Jian was kneeling on the ground in the Sun family.
His hair was disheveled, and his face was full of wrinkles of regret.
As if his soul had been ripped from his body, he suddenly turned around and knelt down in front of his wife with a thud.
His knees slammed hard against the cold floor with a dull thud.
His hands were clenched tightly, and sweat dripped from his forehead like beads from a broken string.
"Honey, I was wrong, I was really wrong! I'll never gamble again, I'll never touch those damn dice again, please forgive me this once, just this once!"
His voice was choked with sobs, as if he were pleading or struggling in despair.
The atmosphere in the room was so oppressive that it was hard to breathe.
Sun Xinyi and her daughter Sun Yuxin, who had just turned eighteen, looked on with helplessness in their eyes.
Sun Yuxin clung tightly to her mother's arm, her eyes red, as if she had been frightened by the sudden turn of events.
Looking at her father kneeling on the ground, she felt a mix of emotions. She hated him for gambling away the family fortune, but also felt sorry for him kneeling on the ground like a child who had made a mistake.
Lin Yuan stood to the side, dressed in casual clothes, his hair neatly combed, his eyes revealing a sense of composure and calmness.
He looked at Sun Jian, a slight upturn of his lips revealing a contemptuous smile.
Does this guy always do this?
It seems that gamblers always apologize when they lose and get carried away when they win; they're such spineless cowards.
But on the surface, he still pretended to be kind and patted Sun Jian on the shoulder.
"Brother Sun, get up. Let bygones be bygones. Live a good life from now on and stop gambling."
