Although Director Ma nodded in agreement, Liu Li truly understood what "resistance" meant when she actually started working on it.
When Xiao Zhao and Xiao Li from the technical department followed Liu Li and moved the parts of the first "dynamic balancing device" to the old C620 lathe in the second workshop, the workers around them slowed down their work and craned their necks to look in their direction. Their eyes showed a mix of curiosity, suspicion, and amusement, but not much trust.
The master craftsman in charge of this bed, surnamed Zhao, was in his fifties and had worked in the workshop for most of his life. His skills were impeccable, but he was a bit stubborn and inflexible. He stood to the side with his arms crossed, watching Liu Li and the others work, his face expressionless, occasionally letting out a snort.
"Master Zhao, could you please remove the cover plate on this side of the spindle box so we can install the sensor base?" Liu Li said politely.
Master Zhao strolled over slowly, picked up a wrench, and muttered as he tightened the screws, "This old bed is riddled with problems. Can a mere lump of iron really fix it? I doubt it."
Young and impetuous, Xiao Zhao couldn't help but retort, "Master Zhao, this device has been verified in the ministry's projects, and the effect is excellent!"
"The ministry is the ministry, and we are us!" Master Zhao rolled his eyes. "Can we afford to take care of this old guy with those fancy gadgets? What if we don't cure his cough and it turns out to be tuberculosis!"
Liu Li quickly stopped Xiao Zhao with her eyes, took the cover plate that Zhao had removed, and said with a smile, "Master Zhao, you are very experienced. When we install it later, I will need your help to check and see if there is anything that is not suitable."
The installation process was a bit bumpy. When fixing the base, one screw hole didn't align and needed to be slightly enlarged. Master Zhao immediately seized the opportunity: "See? What did I tell you? It doesn't fit! This bed is older than all of you; the dimensions are way out of standard!"
Liu Li remained silent, picked up a file, and carefully adjusted the hole. Her hands were steady, and her movements were practiced; she was clearly someone who frequently worked with machinery. Master Zhao watched without saying anything more, but the critical look in his eyes lessened slightly.
Another problem arose during wiring. The workshop had significant electromagnetic interference, causing the homemade sensor signal to be unstable, resulting in erratic waveforms on the oscilloscope. Xiao Li spent a long time troubleshooting, but the results were unsatisfactory.
"How about it? It's not working, is it?" Master Zhao leaned closer again. "I told you this old-fashioned method is unreliable! We still have to rely on the ears and feel of our master craftsmen!"
The progress suddenly stalled. The workers watching nearby began to whisper among themselves, and comments like "futile efforts" and "a waste of time" could be faintly heard. Xiao Zhao and Xiao Li were a little embarrassed, and sweat beaded on their foreheads.
Liu Li was anxious, but she knew she couldn't act rashly. She asked Xiao Li to continue checking the wiring and grounding, while she picked up a multimeter and measured each section, checking the anti-interference measures in the manual one by one.
"Master Zhao," she suddenly asked, "which DC motor in our workshop has the most interference? Is it that old gantry planer at the east end?"
Mr. Zhao was taken aback, not expecting her to ask this, and subconsciously replied, "Ah...yes, that thing, once it's turned on, my radio starts making a squeaking sound."
"Try moving its power cord a little further away from our signal line," Liu Li instructed.
Xiao Zhao quickly ran to fix it. After a while, the previously messy waveform on the oscilloscope became much clearer and more stable!
"All done!" Xiao Li shouted excitedly.
Looking at the stabilized waveform, and then at Liu Li's calm face, Master Zhao opened his mouth as if to say something, but in the end he didn't say anything. He just silently handed the wrench in his hand to Xiao Li, who needed to tighten the screws next to him.
The first screw was finally tightened. But this was just the beginning, Liu Li knew. The greater resistance came from people's long-standing habits and preconceived notions. Breaking these was harder than tightening a hundred screws. She needed more patience and more tangible results.
