Chapter 20

Chapter 20

After sending Lin Qi off, Chen Yan got back into a taxi.

Outside the car window, the familiar street scene kept receding, the halo of neon lights like long, flowing ribbons. But his mood was completely different from when he came.

He leaned back in the back seat, replaying every detail of tonight in his mind.

From her sparkling eyes in the restaurant when she excitedly announced the "grand plan"; to her soft profile when she was listening to "Autumn Whispers" at the concert; and finally, under the dim light on the porch, her soft lips and that dragonfly-like kiss with a hint of cool evening breeze.

Every picture is extremely clear.

Just then, the phone screen lit up.

It is a forest dweller.

He clicked on the message and saw the words he had said to her several times before, and couldn't help but laugh. The light inside the car was dim, but his eyes were brighter than the neon lights outside the window.

He could imagine the cute look on her face as she expressed her concern, cautiously and pretending to be calm.

He didn't reply immediately, but waited for his heartbeat to calm down a little.

[Chen Yan: Still on the way, almost there.]

[Chen Yan: It seems like you stole this line.]

He made a teasing remark with a smile, and then, in a gentle and somewhat doting tone, put an end to this perfect Sunday.

[Chen Yan: Alright, mission accomplished, Lin Qi.]

[Chen Yan: Go to bed, it's late. Good evening.]

【Lin Qi: Good night~】

In the taxi, he saw the last "good night" she sent him, with a soft ending.

He smiled and didn't reply this time.

Some conversations should end in such a place that makes people feel warm and soft.

He put away his phone, leaned back in his seat and closed his eyes.

This Sunday seemed exceptionally long, long enough to leave a clear and profound mark on his uneventful life of the past thirty-five years.

The car stopped downstairs of his house.

He got out of the car, walked into the empty elevator, and opened the door to his home.

The room was just as quiet and tidy as when he left it. But tonight, he felt that there was something different in the silence.

It is no longer complete loneliness, but a kind of expectant and peaceful tranquility.

That Sunday night, Lin Qi couldn't sleep.

Turning off the lights and lying in bed, all the details of the day replayed uncontrollably in her mind, frame by frame, like scenes from a movie.

In the restaurant, the serious look in his eyes when he said, "We are the same, don't let each other down"; at the concert, the palpitation he brought when his warm palm covered the back of her hand; and the last kiss downstairs, which was as light as a dragonfly touching the water, but made her blood seem to freeze.

She thought she had always been a very sober and rational person, but in front of Shen Yan, the calmness that she was proud of seemed to collapse bit by bit.

He was like a silent puzzle solver, who could always easily see through her sensitive and contradictory core wrapped in optimism and straightforwardness. Even when she self-deprecatingly called it a "side effect", he used a more profound word "price" to give her the highest level of understanding and respect.

This feeling of being completely seen through made her panic, but she also felt an unprecedented sense of...peace of mind.

With such complicated and sweet confusion of thoughts, she fell into a deep sleep in the second half of the night.

On Monday, I was woken up by the shrill alarm clock.

The romantic weekend quickly gave way to the reality of the workday. A mountain of emails and a constant stream of meetings left her with barely any time for her thoughts to wander. Like a skilled professional, she quickly mobilized all her energy, handling each task professionally and efficiently.

The phone was silent all day. He didn't contact her, and she didn't contact him.

This wasn't anxiety over gain or loss, but a tacit understanding. They both needed time to recover from that overly wonderful weekend, to return to their own paths, and to allow their rapidly escalating emotions to settle slowly.

It was not until after get off work on Monday that Lin Qi dragged his tired body back home. The feeling that had been suppressed by work slowly surfaced with the quiet air.

She looked at the Bach record she had placed on the bookshelf and couldn't help but smile.

It turns out that a person's life can become so promising because of the appearance of another person.
