Everything's arranged, so let's get some rest. Nothing's more important than sleep.
I woke up feeling refreshed, as if the fatigue from the previous day was just an illusion.
The next day, the schedule was the same as yesterday. The newly arrived educated youth and the aunties pulled weeds. The weeds in the field were thriving; if they weren't pulled for a few days, they would grow back in large patches, squeezing out all the nutrients from the grain.
Today, Zhuang Zhimeng and Jiang Yanxia are still with Wang Zhaodi.
“Zhuang and Jiang, we’re assigned to the same group again today, that’s great! It’s quite interesting working with me, isn’t it?” Wang Zhaodi said confidently.
"Aunt Wang, we're happy too! We love working with you, it's never boring." Zhuang Zhimeng said this on purpose, knowing that Aunt Wang liked to hear it.
"Haha, that's right! I guarantee you won't be bored if you follow me. Young girls always have such pleasant voices, I love listening to them!" Wang Zhaodi laughed heartily.
“We’ll all work with Aunt Wang from now on. We’d love to follow her, it’s so much fun,” Jiang Yanxia quickly added.
The three were chatting enthusiastically and were just about to slack off when they turned around and saw the brigade leader's expressionless, dark face.
"Cough! Cough cough... cough cough cough..." Zhuang Zhimeng was so frightened that she choked on her own saliva.
The three of them immediately pretended to be working hard, as serious as they could possibly be, as if they wanted to find ants on the ground.
"Hmph!" The captain glared at the three men and left.
"I was so scared! I didn't even notice the captain coming over; we were so engrossed in our conversation." Jiang Yanxia looked terrified.
"It's okay! We'll just be careful next time! As long as he doesn't catch us again!" Wang Zhaodi said reassuringly.
Today, Zhuang Zhimeng and Jiang Yanxia still earned 5 work points, while Wang Zhaodi earned 8. That's not bad, considering Zhuang Zhimeng doesn't rely on work points to exchange for food, so she doesn't want to work herself to exhaustion.
Jiang Yanxia finished work early today and said to Zhuang Zhimeng, "Zhimeng, I heard some of the aunties say they're going up the mountain to pick mushrooms later. Let's go with them!"
“Okay! Let’s go with them and see what’s up on the mountain. Let’s go get the baskets from Uncle Li and go with them.” Zhuang Zhimeng had also been wanting to go up the mountain for a while.
After taking the basket, I found a few women who were going up the mountain and explained my purpose to them. They all agreed to come up the mountain with me.
Once they reached the mountain, the aunties told Zhuang Zhimeng and Jiang Yanxia which mushrooms were edible and which were poisonous, just in case they picked any they didn't recognize and got poisoned.
After that, everyone dispersed.
The mountain is covered in lush, green trees. There are so many mushrooms, scattered here and there. You can easily gather a whole bunch in no time. Even the dead branches on the ground should be picked up; nothing should be wasted, they can all be used as firewood!
"Zhimeng, look at this mushroom, it's so beautiful!" Jiang Yanxia suddenly exclaimed.
Zhuang Zhimeng turned her head to look and said irritably, "Hurry up and pick them back, then we can all lie down and relax after we've eaten them!"
"Huh?" Jiang Yanxia looked at Zhuang Zhimeng in confusion.
“Red umbrellas, white stems, all lying on the ground. Look at this mushroom, isn’t it like this?” Zhuang Zhimeng pointed to the poisonous mushrooms on the ground.
Jiang Yanxia saw that it was indeed true and was so frightened that she quickly let go, afraid that she would be poisoned if she touched it.
Zhuang Zhimeng told Jiang Yanxia what was going on, and then walked ahead to see if there was anything else she could collect to take back.
A short distance ahead, she saw a walnut tree. She really liked eating walnuts. She put her basket down and started picking them up. The ones on the ground were all dry, perfect for eating now. She picked up all the ones she could find, but there weren't many. She guessed it wasn't time yet; many were still unripe.
As I walked on, I saw some pine trees and picked up some pine nuts.
As she was picking them up, she suddenly felt something hit her head. When she looked up, she saw a little squirrel.
The little squirrel was happily munching on a pine nut. Perhaps it thought Zhuang Zhimeng was stealing its food and was getting revenge.
Zhuang Zhimeng's cheeks were puffed up with anger. She threw a pine nut at the little squirrel, which startled it so much that it jumped to the top of the tree.
He looked down at Zhuang Zhimeng, giving her a disdainful glance as if mocking her.
"Little thing, don't fall into my hands, or you'll be sorry! Humph!" Zhuang Zhimeng shouted at the top of the tree.
After teasing the little squirrel, Zhuang Zhimeng continued walking. As she walked, she suddenly saw a brightly colored chicken and thought it must be the legendary golden pheasant.
He picked up a stone from the ground and threw it. Thud! The pheasant fell to the ground with a bloody hole in its head.
Zhuang Zhimeng quickly picked up the pheasant, and seeing that no one was around, she put it in the warehouse, planning to cook it for a meal when she moved and hosted a party.
