Chapter 23 He was just one step away from losing her!

Chapter 23 He was so close to losing her!

Pei Jiuyan was cleaning crabs in the yard. The seafood that Qin Suisui brought back from the beach yesterday was kept in a large bucket, and they had to eat it in the next couple of days.

Hearing the noise outside, Pei Jiuyan looked up and saw a tall, slender young man wearing gold-rimmed glasses standing at the door, peering into the courtyard. Seeing him look over, the man immediately smiled and said, "Hello, comrade! Does Qin Suisui live here? I'm her distant cousin; I need to speak with her about something!"

Pei Jiuyan's sharp eyes narrowed instantly. He sat there, but his aura seemed to be much higher than that of the man standing there. He raised his eyes slightly to look at the man in front of him. Why didn't he remember that little girl having any distant cousin?

The moment Pei Jiuyan's gaze fell upon him, Sun Ruwen felt as if he had been pierced by an ice sword, feeling chilly and extremely uncomfortable.

Just as he was thinking he might have come to the wrong place and was about to leave, Qin Suisui, who had heard the noise, came out of the house. When she saw Sun Ruwen, she was stunned for a long time before she remembered his name: "Brother Ruwen?"

Upon hearing those three words, Pei Jiuyan raised an eyebrow slightly.

Sun Ruwen nodded vigorously, "Yes, yes, it's me! It's so good that you still remember me, Sui Sui!"

Qin Suisui was filled with mixed feelings and really didn't know how to face Sun Ruwen.

Sun Ruwen is Yang Jiankang's wife, the child of Sun Yun's sister, and Sun Yun's nephew. He is only two years older than Qin Suisui and often went to the Qin family's house with Yang Jiankang when they were young. However, Sun Yun's sister later remarried and moved to Guangzhou, and Sun Ruwen went with her. After that, they lost contact.

Qin Suisui had long forgotten about this person; if she hadn't seen Sun Ruwen in person, she wouldn't have remembered him at all.

Seeing that Qin Suisui still remembered him, Sun Ruwen was happy, but he didn't forget the important matter: "Sister Suisui, I came here today on behalf of my aunt! Do you know that something happened to their family?"

Qin Suisui's clear eyes were fixed on Sun Ruwen. Sun Ruwen assumed she didn't know, so she continued, "My uncle was framed by his mortal enemy for stealing state funds and was executed. My aunt's family was also implicated and sent to Qiongtan Island. They're probably near that wild jungle by now. She knows I'm a sent-down youth on Qiongtan Island, so she asked someone to send me a message, telling me to come find you..."

Sun Ruwen's speech grew slower and slower as he realized something was amiss. Not only had his younger sister, Sui Sui, not invited him in to sit and talk, but she also showed no emotion whatsoever when she heard about the misfortune befalling her aunt's family. Logically, her aunt's family and their own family were very close…

Qin Suisui crossed her arms and looked at Sun Ruwen: "Why did she send you to find me?"

Sun Ruwen steeled himself and relayed his aunt's instructions: "She told me to come to this military region to find you. She said if you're here, it means you're married. She said your spouse is..." He turned to look at Pei Jiuyan, meeting his cold gaze, swallowed hard, and then mustered his courage to continue: "She said your spouse definitely has a way to help them. Even if they can't rescue them, they can at least make their lives a little better..."

Qin Suisui sneered: "Did she tell you that the things her family sold on the black market included not only state assets but also my family's belongings? Did she tell you why they didn't pick me up and take me to Qiongtan Island as agreed that night? Did she tell you that her whole family not only didn't plan to send me away, but also planned to drug me and send me to the bed of Yang Jiankang, a leader in his fifties?"

The three powerful questions stunned the three people present.

Pei Jiuyan was the first to react. His aura instantly turned cold, his deep, pool-like eyes froze into ice, and his hands, like iron clamps, quickly locked onto Sun Ruwen's neck, forcing him back against the wall.

Liu Qianyun's eyebrows shot up: "What?! If it weren't for your Qin family, Yang Jiankang's family would have starved to death eight hundred years ago! How dare they treat you like this!"

Sun Ruwen only came to his senses when Pei Jiuyan choked him until he couldn't breathe. His face showed fear, but his eyes were full of confusion, as if he really didn't know anything about these things.

Qin Suisui hadn't expected Pei Jiuyan to react so strongly. She quickly stepped forward and grabbed Pei Jiuyan's arm, saying, "Ayan, let go! What if someone sees this?" Pei Jiuyan was a soldier, and if someone with ulterior motives saw his actions, who knew what trouble it might cause.

Liu Qianyun also rushed over: "Ayan, don't be foolish, let go quickly, don't get yourself killed instead of avenging Suisui!"

Pei Jiuyan's eyes were bloodshot, his heart filled with regret. He hated himself for being so clever as to think she would mind Zan Zan's existence and thus reduce contact with her. If he had paid more attention to the Qin family and to her, he could have brought her over before the Qin family's misfortune, preventing her from almost falling into Yang Jiankang's trap.

Just thinking about the deeper meaning behind Qin Suisui's words made Pei Jiuyan so angry he wanted to kill someone. He was so close, so very close, to losing her!

He became caught up in his emotions, and the force in his hands increased.

Just then, he heard Qin Suisui's voice in his ear: "Brother Ajiu, look, I'm fine, aren't I? Let go!"

Qin Suisui was also frightened. If she had known Pei Jiuyan would lose control because of this, she wouldn't have brought it up. If it affected his future, she would be guilty of a terrible sin. She called Pei Jiuyan several times but he didn't respond, so in desperation she could only call out "Brother Jiu."

Pei Jiuyan released Sun Ruwen's neck, but his expression remained icy. He took a step back and stood beside Qin Suisui, holding her hand tightly.

Qin Suisui was taken aback. Her hands were not the slender and long type. On the contrary, each finger was not long, round and thin, like tender white scallions. Her nails were also neatly and rounded, making her whole hand look particularly small.

Pei Jiuyan held it in his hand, feeling as if he were holding a piece of soft, warm silk, so soft that it seemed he could melt it with the slightest pressure.

Sun Ruwen slid off the wall to the ground, sitting there coughing for a long time before he recovered. He looked up at Qin Suisui with red eyes: "Sister Suisui, I really didn't know any of this. You know, I moved to Guangzhou with my mother when I was fourteen. If I had known these things, I..."

There was nothing he could do; when the accident happened, he was far away on Qiongtan Island.

He sat there for a while, looking somewhat dejected, before slowly standing up. He dusted off his clothes, straightened them, and bowed deeply to Qin Suisui: "Sister Suisui, my aunt and uncle made a mistake. Don't worry, just pretend I was never here today."

Then he turned around and bowed to Pei Jiuyan, who was standing next to Qin Suisui. He didn't say anything, but he knew that if Pei Jiuyan hadn't held back just now, he would already be meeting Marx with his strength.

After bowing, Sun Ruwen turned and got on his bicycle, ready to leave. Then, remembering something, he suddenly turned back and smiled at Qin Suisui: "I came in a hurry today and forgot to bring you anything good to eat. If you still want to call me your brother, I'll bring you some local specialties from Guangzhou next time. By the way, the place I'm working in is Hongqiding Brigade, which is next to Guangmingding Brigade. You can come to me anytime if you need anything. I'll give you an explanation for that matter."

After saying that, he got on his bicycle and rode away without looking back.

Whether it was Qin Suisui's imagination or not, she felt that when Sun Ruwen finished speaking, the coldness that Pei Jiuyan had just suppressed seemed to spread again.

But she didn't have time to think about it, because Liu Qianyun had already pulled her in and wanted to know what had happened that day.

Qin Suisui didn't hide anything and told her about the situation at home on the day of the accident, as well as her parents' arrangements for her. She only concealed the fact that she had awakened and about the space. She only said that she had waited in the cellar for a long time, but Yang Jiankang did not come to pick her up, so she secretly went to the Yang family and overheard the couple plotting these things.

Liu Qianyun was heartbroken and tears streamed down her face. She knew all too well how Sui Sui had been spoiled and pampered as she grew up. She didn't know what kind of torment she had endured when her family was destroyed overnight and she was betrayed by the people she trusted.

She held Qin Suisui in her arms, cursing Yang Jiankang's family as she went, secretly determined that she would never let them get away with it!

Pei Jiuyan remained calm as if nothing had happened. He washed the seafood outside and then cooked it himself, steaming a pot of seafood stew according to Qin Suisui's preferences. He also stir-fried a plate of spicy squid and spicy clams, and fried eggs with oysters. The main dish was shrimp and crab congee, served with large steamed buns brought back from the cafeteria.

After finishing the meal and cleaning up the dishes, he prepared the bathwater for Qin Suisui. Only after she had taken a bath and gone to bed did he gently get up and open the mosquito net.

Under the moonlight, Qin Suisui's sleeping face resembled a slowly blooming water lily, serene and gentle. When no one was watching, Pei Jiuyan's eyes were devoid of any coldness, filled only with tenderness. He couldn't help but gently stroke her face, feeling her soft breath on his palm, and only then did he feel a little more at ease.

Fortunately, she was quick-witted enough to escape their trap and arrive safely by his side. But this doesn't mean their crimes can be erased! He will avenge her against everyone who wronged her!

His eyes sharpened again. He swatted a mosquito that had sneaked into the mosquito net, checked it again to make sure the inside of the net was clean, and then tiptoed out of the room.
