Chapter 262 The Child Ghost
"Sui Sui, can...can we still go back?"
Jia Zhenzhen shrank her neck and clung tightly to Qin Suisui. At this moment, she felt that all her brute strength was useless in this situation. It was the first time she had ever felt so weak, pitiful and helpless.
Qin Suisui was terrified. Captain Li's words kept echoing in her ears: "The elders say that some precious herbs are guarded by mountain spirits or ghosts, or have been cursed by the 'grass witches' of the past, so they cannot be easily picked..."
So, did they really encounter some mountain spirits? Did they anger them because they mistakenly picked the lantern flower...?
As the two shivered, they suddenly heard rustling footsteps coming from the fog. Their hearts jumped, and they clung to each other, afraid to let go.
A small figure walked over; it was a child! The two people's hearts, which had been pounding with anxiety, slowly calmed down.
Qin Suisui suddenly remembered the child who had gone missing from Captain Li's house, and quickly asked, "Little friend, are you Tiedan from Captain Li's house?"
The child, who had been facing away from them, slowly turned around when he heard Qin Suisui's voice. Only then did the two women realize that the child's clothes were all tattered, as if they had been scratched by sharp claws. Moreover, even in such dim light, they could see faint traces of blood seeping through the clothes.
Looking up along the clothes, the child's face was covered in blood! Fresh blood flowed down his cheeks from a large hole in his forehead, smearing his face and looking quite frightening.
The two were startled. Qin Suisui, forgetting her fear, rushed forward and took out disinfectant and cotton swabs from her bag: "Little friend, you're hurt. Come here quickly, let me give you some simple first aid."
Qin Suisui was so focused on rummaging through her bag that she didn't notice Jia Zhenzhen's expression change as she looked at the child turning around.
Jia Zhenzhen swallowed hard, gently tugged at Qin Suisui's sleeve, and whispered, "Suisui... Suisui, this child doesn't seem quite right."
Qin Suisui didn't look up, but answered Jia Zhenzhen's question: "It's a bit abnormal. With such a serious injury, it's probably because he was bitten by a wild animal in the mountains. We need to disinfect it and send him to the hospital immediately."
"No...no..." Jia Zhenzhen's voice trembled more and more.
Sensing the tremor in Jia Zhenzhen's words, Qin Suisui finally realized something was wrong. She suddenly looked up and saw that the child whose face had just been smeared with blood had no eyes! She hadn't paid attention when she saw the child's injury earlier, and because the light was dim, she was so frightened when she saw it that she sat down with a thud.
Who doesn't have eyes?! That's definitely not normal!
Jia Zhenzhen pulled Qin Suisui up: "Suisui, run! This isn't human!"
In the face of crisis, Qin Suisui instinctively unleashed her strength. She rose to her feet with Jia Zhenzhen's help, and the two of them, supporting each other, ran out quickly.
It was like being trapped in a maze; no matter which direction they ran, after only a few steps, the child would inexplicably appear in front of them.
The two immediately turned around and continued running, but after only a couple of steps, the child suddenly appeared in front of them again.
Even though Qin Suisui and Jia Zhenzhen were both in good physical condition, they were exhausted in this situation. The two of them supported each other and stood there panting heavily.
"Sui Sui... Waaah... What do we do? Are we doomed?" Jia Zhenzhen burst into tears. Although she was strong, she wasn't very brave and was terrified of ghosts. She never expected to encounter one as soon as she arrived in Yunnan Province!
Qin Suisui was also terrified, and even considered whether she should take Jia Zhenzhen into the space. It was better to expose the space than to lose her life!
Just then, Qin Suisui, using the light of her flashlight, suddenly discovered a cave not far ahead!
"Zhenzhen! Run! There's a cave over there, let's go in and hide until dawn!" She was still rational and knew that this kind of "dirty thing" only appeared at night and would disappear at dawn.
Jia Zhenzhen obviously saw it too. She grabbed Qin Suisui's hand, and the two of them ran towards the cave with all their might.
Surprisingly, this time the "child ghost" didn't block their way. However, although the cave seemed close, it actually took them seven or eight minutes to run there.
The two stumbled inside and found the cave unusually dry, with a faint herbal scent.
The cave looks like it was inhabited long ago. There are some old household items left inside, and some blurry murals painted with mineral pigments on the cave walls, depicting scenes of ancient people performing sacrifices and collecting herbs.
The two men walked in with flashlights and were surprised to find a small child lying next to a bonfire that had been extinguished!
As the two approached, they realized that this child was none other than the "child ghost" they had just encountered!
No wonder he didn't chase after them when they ran towards this cave. Was he trying to lure them into the cave so he could find his body?
Qin Suisui felt a throbbing pain in her head. The two of them were already on edge, and after running through the mountains for so long, the sight of the corpse in front of them had pushed them to their physical and mental limits.
But she hadn't forgotten the oath she made to the ancestral master when she was learning medicine from her grandmother. She carefully moved over, wanting to see if the child still had any vital signs. If she could save him, she would do her best.
The child was lying face down on the ground, and it was unknown how long he had been lying there; his chances of being alive were extremely slim.
But Qin Suisui suppressed her immense fear and carefully turned his small body over, trying her best to flip him over.
Only then could they see clearly that the child's face was covered in bloody holes! His features were already blurred, especially his eyes, which had been gouged out, leaving two large bloody holes.
The child had clearly been dead for several days; his face was already swollen.
As Qin Suisui moved, pieces of his tattered skin fell off, revealing black pus oozing out.
Qin Suisui suppressed her fear and spoke softly:
“I’m so sorry, little friend. I didn’t mean it. I just wanted to check if you had any vital signs. Now that you’re gone, rest in peace. May you be a happy child in your next life. When I come down the mountain tomorrow, I’ll call the villagers to help carry you back to your ancestral home and bury you. May your spirit in heaven bless us both so that we can leave this world safely. Thank you.”
Qin Suisui didn't believe in these things, but since she had encountered them, she still had to maintain a sense of awe. She said these things not only to appease the spirits of the dead, but also to put her own mind at ease.
But to her surprise, as soon as she finished speaking, a smile slowly appeared on that bloodied and mangled face, on that broken corner of the mouth!
Jia Zhenzhen saw it too.
The two looked at each other and simultaneously screamed in terror, "Aaaaaaah!"
Unable to withstand the immense physical and mental strain, the two of them fainted from fright.
