The doctor carefully examined Zhou Rui's ears and even had him take an X-ray. Zhou Rui couldn't hear what they were saying very clearly.
He Muchen escorted Zhou Rui back to his ward and went to the doctor's office. He Muchen asked the doctor about Zhou Rui's condition, "Doctor, what happened to his ear?"
"His left ear was likely hit by a heavy object, causing temporary hearing loss in his left ear."
"What do you mean by temporary hearing loss?" He Muchen asked with a gloomy expression.
"It's possible that he'll be able to hear again in his left ear after a while, or it's possible that he'll never hear again in his left ear," the doctor explained to him.
Standing outside the door, Zhou Rui covered his left ear and heard the doctor say this through his right ear. Tears instantly streamed down his face.
"Doctor, could you please help me think of a way to cure him?"
"I will definitely treat it, but I can't guarantee whether it will be cured or not."
Zhou Rui stumbled back to the ward, hid under the covers, bit her lip, and held back her tears.
He didn't want He Muchen to see him like this; he didn't want He Muchen to worry about him. He couldn't cry; he had to smile.
When He Muchen returned from the doctor's office, he saw Zhou Rui huddled in the blankets, trembling.
Fighting back tears, she pulled back the covers and lay down beside Zhou Rui, wrapping her arms around him from behind. She whispered in his right ear, "I'm sorry, wife, it's all my fault."
Zhou Rui bit her lip hard to stop her tears from falling, then smiled and turned to hide in He Muchen's arms, feeling the warmth of his body.
"Honey, why are you apologizing to me? I'm fine."
He Muchen gently touched his left ear, unable to hold back his tears any longer, and sobbed, "I'm sorry, wife, if it weren't for me, you wouldn't have been hurt."
Zhou Rui looked up and kissed He Muchen, "Husband, don't cry, don't feel guilty. As long as you're okay, that's more important than anything else."
"If you really feel guilty, then go and earn some money tomorrow to get your ears treated."
Zhou Rui used his hospital gown to wipe away the tears on his face and said with a smile, "It would be great if you couldn't be cured, then I could rely on you for the rest of my life."
"Don't talk nonsense, it will definitely be cured."
"What, you don't want me to rely on you for the rest of my life?" Zhou Rui pouted.
"No... I wish you would stay with me and never leave me."
"But I want you to be well even more."
"Wife, I love you."
Zhou Rui smiled in agreement, though he hadn't clearly heard what He Muchen said; his left ear seemed to be able to hear at times and not at others.
Zhou Rui yawned, "Honey, I'm sleepy, coax me to sleep."
"good..."
He Muchen gently stroked his hair, and soon Zhou Rui's breathing, which sounded as he fell asleep, brushed against his neck.
Seeing that he was asleep, He Muchen slowly got up, went out and called his older brother, asking him to find the best doctor to treat Zhou Rui.
The next morning, Zhou Rui woke up in He Muchen's warm embrace. He rubbed his eyes, stretched, and said, "Honey, why aren't you going to make money yet?"
"I asked the director for half a day off so I could spend more time with you."
Zhou Rui exclaimed, "Husband, speak in my right ear."
"I want to spend more time with you," He Muchen whispered gently into his right ear.
He Muchen spent half the day with him, and reluctantly went to film in the afternoon. He even considered not filming the movie at all.
After He Muchen left, Zhou Rui went to the hospital office to ask the doctor about his ear. The doctor told him that he couldn't guarantee his ear could be cured, but could only try his best to treat it.
Zhou Rui returned to his ward dejectedly, staring blankly at He Muchen's photo until sunset. He then texted his father, asking him to come pick him up the next day.
When his father learned that his precious son was hospitalized, he drove over overnight to find him. Zhou Rui's parents did not arrive at the hospital until the next morning.
When Zhou Rui's parents arrived, He Muchen had already been sent to the film set by Zhou Rui to film a movie.
Zhou Rui's mother hugged Zhou Rui and said, "Baby, why didn't you tell us you were hospitalized right away?"
Zhou Rui smiled and said to his mother, "Mom, can you talk to me in my right ear? My left ear is injured and I can't hear very well."
Zhou Rui's father frowned and said, "Honey, what did you say? Your ears..."
"Sometimes I can hear it and sometimes I can't. The doctor said it will get better in a while."
"Dad, I want to go home. Can you take me home?"
Zhou Rui forced a smile. This was the first time he had spoken to his father like this. Although this was the father he had stolen, he just wanted to lean on his father's broad arms.
He had never met his parents since he was a child, and his memories were only of his grandparents. Since coming here, he has finally experienced what it feels like to have a father's or mother's love.
He's like a wounded little bird now, wanting to hide in the embrace of a big bird.
"Okay, Dad will take you home."
Zhou Rui packed his clothes while his father went to handle his discharge procedures.
Zhou Rui's mother held Zhou Rui's hand, "Sweetie, where's Xiao He?"
"He's filming a movie," Zhou Rui said with a smile.
"Does he know that your ears are like this?"
"I know, Mom, but I don't think I'm really suited to stay by his side anymore. I don't want to hold him back." A tear rolled down Zhou Rui's cheek.
Zhou Rui's mother hugged her son and said, "Okay, baby, let's go home."
After Zhou Rui left the hospital, his father, driving the car, said, "Honey, shall we go abroad for treatment when we get back?"
"good..."
Zhou Rui stared blankly out the car window. His beautiful dream with He Muchen had ended, but he was thankful that at least his loving parents were still in his dream.
He Muchen rushed to the hospital after finishing filming that night, without even removing his makeup.
When he arrived at the hospital ward, he saw the empty bed with its neatly made blankets, but Zhou Rui was nowhere to be seen.
He rushed to the nurses' station and asked the nurse: Where is the patient in room 303?
The nurse replied, "The patient in room 303 was picked up by his family early this morning."
"Family?" He Muchen asked, puzzled.
He dialed Zhou Rui's cell phone, but the message came through: "The number you dialed is currently switched off. Please try again later."
He frantically kept dialing, but the same voice kept coming through the phone.
He called Zhou Rui's mother, but no one answered.
Zhou Rui looked at his mother's phone and stopped her, "Mom, can't you not answer it?"
Mrs. Zhou sighed helplessly as she watched her phone ring incessantly.
"Honey, put your phone on silent, it's annoying to hear it."
This time, Zhou's mother didn't scold her husband. Looking at her son beside her, she carefully muted her phone.
He Muchen made many phone calls and sent many messages to Zhou Rui, but received no response, as if Zhou Rui had truly disappeared.
He then sent a message to Zhou Rui's mother.
[Aunt Zhou, is Rui Rui with you?]
