Chapter Fifty-Three: Protect Her Life

"Clang, clang—"

In the middle of the night, a series of piercing sounds of weapons clashing woke Su An.

She rubbed her sleepy eyes and sat up groggily, "Who is it, in the middle of the night..."

"Watch out!"

Fu Zhun's cold voice suddenly rang out, and Su An was pulled back. Immediately afterwards, an arrow narrowly missed her face.

"Hiss! This...?" Su An was instantly wide awake with fright, staring blankly at the arrow as it shot straight into the wall behind him with a "clang".

She turned her head in horror and discovered that several masked men in black had sneaked into the cell and were staring at them with cold, murderous intent in their eyes.

Two men drew their bows again and shot arrows at her and Fu Zhun, while another man was chopping at the iron chains of the prison door, eager to rush in immediately.

call out!

Two sharp arrows shot through the air. Fu Zhun ducked and quickly dodged, then grabbed Su An and rolled nimbly, narrowly avoiding them.

Su An then realized what was happening. The alarm blared, and he quickly lifted a wooden table next to him to block her and Fu Zhun, shouting outside, "Who are you! Coming into the jail to kill someone, do you have a death wish!"

As if to confirm her words, such a commotion alerted the prison, and several footsteps soon echoed from one side.

The leader was Li Daming. He was terrified when he heard the sound of blades coming from Su An's cell, after all, those two officials were the ones he was particularly concerned about!

Upon arriving and seeing two or three assassins, he immediately roared, "Who are these thieves who dare to trespass into the prison! Seize them all!"

He was followed by a group of prisoners, so he was emboldened by the three assassins and brandished his sword, leading his men in a charge.

Just when Su An thought he saw hope, the two archer assassins smiled disdainfully and then fired three arrows at once.

Li Daming and the others were taken aback. By the time they realized what was happening, there was nowhere to hide in the narrow passageway, and they were all struck in vital areas.

"You bunch of thieves... Wait, the arrow is poisoned!"

Li Daming was lucky enough to only be shot in the arm, but soon his face turned purplish-blue, his eyes widened in terror, and his chubby body swayed unsteadily.

The assassin dismissively fired another arrow, striking him squarely in the throat—he died with his eyes wide open.

In a few swift moves, all the prisoners who came were killed!

Su An witnessed this scene firsthand, her hands and feet turned cold, and she couldn't help but tremble. It was only Fu Zhun's suppressed groan behind her that brought her back to her senses.

Turning his head, he realized that Fu Zhun had just pressed down on his legs. Cold sweat dripped down his face, and his veins stood out as he endured the pain.

Before he could speak, Fu Zhun bent over and rolled, taking advantage of the opening to gather strength in his legs again, quickly stood up, pulled out the arrow from the wall, and threw it at an assassin with a backhand thrust.

At the same time, he flicked his hidden arrow, which flew towards another assassin wielding a bow.

call out--

The long arrow pierced the assassin's throat, killing him instantly, but several hidden arrows were nimbly dodged, only piercing the assassin's skin and flesh.

This series of fluid and skillful moves left Su An speechless.

Her lucky charm, even with a limp, can still scale walls and rooftops?

The assassins seemed to take Fu Zhun's attack seriously, their auras becoming heavy. Another assassin stopped attacking, picked up the dead man's bow and arrow, retreated rapidly, and then shot an arrow at Fu Zhun without hesitation.

"Oh no!" Su An panicked.

After retaliating, Fu Zhun could no longer support himself and collapsed to the ground, breathing heavily. Cold sweat seeped into his pale, icy eyes, making it impossible for him to dodge the two arrows.

Besides, the arrow was poisoned!

Without a second thought, Su An gritted her teeth and lunged forward, using the wooden table to block one arrow, but another arrow pierced her shoulder with a "thud".

"Su An!"

Fu Zhun's pupils contracted slightly as he caught her limp body in shock, a look of panic flashing in his eyes. "You..."

"It's nothing, just hide quickly..."

Su An frowned, trying to force a smile, but the sharp pain in her shoulder, mixed with toxins, quickly spread to her internal organs, turning her face pale in the blink of an eye and making it increasingly difficult for her to breathe.

Why does it hurt so damn much?!

Could she have just died like this...?

Before she could even pray to Buddha or beg for help, Su An finally felt dizzy and couldn't hold on any longer, so she closed her eyes.

"master!"

In the nick of time, Jian Yi arrived with his bodyguards and immediately subdued the two assassins. However, when he saw what was happening in the prison, he immediately sensed something was wrong.

He hurriedly knelt down and reported, "Your subordinate is late! Just now, several dozen assassins held me back, but I didn't expect some to slip through the net!"

Fu Zhun's breathing became erratic, and his hands, which were holding Su An, tightened until they turned white. He hissed, "Summon Xie Qingfeng immediately!"

Then, his icy gaze swept over the two assassins, "As for them—"

"Hmph!" However, the two assassins were not afraid at all. They quickly crushed the poison in their teeth and died in the blink of an eye.

"Damn it!" Jian Yi couldn't stop them in time and could only curse under his breath.

Hearing the sounds of swords and spears from inside the prison, he killed all the assassins without thinking twice. Unexpectedly, the two survivors he left behind also committed suicide!

Fu Zhun's face turned faintly ashen. He ignored them and said, "Go find the county magistrate and tell him to vacate a clean room immediately!"

We don't know if there will be any future troubles, but right now the magistrate's house is the safest place!

Xie Qingfeng and Zhou Li arrived at the place quickly, both disheveled.

Seeing Su An lying on the bed, clearly poisoned, both of them looked unwell.

"Don't waste time, save her!"

Fu Zhun stood guard by the bedside in his wheelchair, his command almost icy, making the atmosphere in the room as stagnant as if it had fallen into an ice cellar.

Both of them knew something was wrong. Zhou Li, unusually, didn't say a word, while Xie Qingfeng, with a tense face, quickly stepped forward to examine Su An.

After half an incense stick had burned, his expression grew increasingly solemn as he looked hesitantly at Fu Zhun.

"Your Highness, the poison she was given came from a secret medicine from the imperial palace, and I cannot cure it at present."

"The Imperial Palace!" Zhou Li couldn't help but exclaim, his eyes blazing with fury. "So those assassins must have been sent by the Emperor. How despicable!"

A glint of savage light flashed in Fu Zhun's dark eyes, but he forcibly suppressed his anger, staring intently at the lifeless girl on the bed, and almost gritted his teeth as he spoke: "Is there no other way?"

Xie Qingfeng sighed, "This poison takes effect quickly. She will die in no more than half a cup of tea's time. The only antidote is in the palace."

"I can only help her suppress the poison temporarily. The poison will fully erupt in three months. She must take the antidote before then, otherwise there will be no hope of recovery."

These words struck Fu Zhun like a heavy hammer blow to his heart. He breathed heavily and rubbed his temples, feeling slightly dizzy.

Zhou Li quickly helped him up, "Your Highness, your leg is injured again, you should get it checked quickly!"

"No need!" Fu Zhun waved him away in a huff, his knuckles clenched tightly, and said in a cold voice, "Have someone prepare a carriage. I will return to the palace immediately to retrieve the antidote."

Having said that, his cold, fierce gaze swept over Xie Qingfeng, brooking no argument: "Before I return, I want you to protect her life no matter what!"
