"I knew something was off about you. My sister isn't like other women. You'll have to take responsibility for this."
Su Yan winked at her and whispered, "Big sister, I'd reluctantly agree to him becoming my brother-in-law."
Upon hearing this, Su An pretended to hit him. "You little brat, you're even making fun of me now."
"You want a beating, huh? You're asking for trouble!"
She laughed and scolded, watching Su Yan run away with a smirk, leaving only the two of them in the room.
The temperature suddenly rose, and a blush flashed across Su An's fair face as her eyes darted away.
Her breathing was rapid, concealing thoughts she couldn't share, and her voice was shy.
"He's talking nonsense. You should get some rest."
After saying that, she quickly ran out of the house. Once inside, Su An quickly washed up and, exhausted from the day, fell asleep soon after.
In her dream, she seemed to return to the moment when Fu Huai had the accident, his pale face appearing before her.
He lay quietly at the bottom of the water, unresponsive no matter how much they called out. It was Fu Huai who was drowning, but Su An was overwhelmed by the feeling of suffocation.
It felt like someone was choking her, making it hard to breathe. Overwhelmed by panic, Su An suddenly sat up in bed, large beads of sweat dripping down her face.
She woke up from a nightmare and couldn't fall back asleep, so she put on her coat and went to Fu Huai's place.
She only cared about him; she had no other intentions.
The bright moonlight illuminated the heavens and the earth, making everything clearly visible, including the woman standing by the well.
Su An felt a chill run down his spine, thinking he was seeing a ghost.
What kind of wicked thing could you be doing going out in the middle of the night?
Su An approached quietly and, upon recognizing the furtive-looking He Wangshi, immediately shouted, "What are you doing!"
Suddenly, Madam He shuddered, turned around abruptly, and white powder scattered from her bosom.
"Hands behind your head, stand still!"
Su An rushed over, and He Wangshi frantically patted her clothes to destroy the evidence, then covered her face with one hand, not wanting anyone to see her face.
He Wangshi instinctively turned to run away, but she didn't pay attention to her footing. She lost her balance and fell forward. Her ankle twisted, her hands went above her head, and she fell headfirst into the water.
Fortunately, the well opening was large enough, and He Wangshi splashed water haphazardly like a dead pig, swallowing several mouthfuls of water as she went up and down.
"Help! I can't swim, I'm going to die!"
Su An curled her lip in annoyance, "Look at you, sneaking around in the middle of the night, you'll get your comeuppance!"
Despite her scolding, she still went forward and lay down by the well, leaving only He Wangshi's head above the water as she struggled.
The deafening noise attracted the night watchmen, who lit lamps in the backyard, waking everyone up.
"Save her, don't let her die." Su An snorted and gave the order leisurely, adding insult to injury.
Anyway, just leave that wretched old woman a breath of fresh air; she has to suffer a bit.
The waiter waited until He Wangshi had finished struggling before he dragged her up. She knelt on the ground and vomited water.
Li Guihua and several children gathered around, asking worriedly, "What happened? Why did you make such a commotion in the middle of the night?"
Su An crossed his arms and said sharply, "She put some in the well in the middle of the night—"
"This is a life-threatening situation! Even though I'm staying at your house temporarily and my food and lodging are provided by the Su family, you can't take my life!"
He Wangshi looked up to the sky and wailed, interrupting Su An's words, as if she had suffered a great injustice.
Interrupted, Su An laughed in anger, "Trying to turn the tables on me, huh? You know you're staying at my house. Even a dog would loyally protect its owner. You old scoundrel have the nerve to bark like that. You're not even as good as a dog at your age!"
"You—" Madam He's face turned ashen with rage.
"Don't point fingers at my daughter!" Li Guihua realized what was going on and glared angrily at He Wangshi: "My daughter is innocent, how come she's become a murderous monster in your mouth!"
With trembling hands, Madam He swore with conviction: "I was just strolling by the well when she deliberately scared me, causing me to fall in. If the servant hadn't come, she would have just watched me drown. What else could it be but a heartless murderer!"
“Nonsense! I’m warning you, Madam He, my elder sister is not that kind of person.”
He Yan's eyes widened in anger, and he clenched his fists.
Su An sneered at He Wangshi: "You caught the thief red-handed before I even found the well. Did you notify me in advance to come and harm you tonight?"
"She must have planned this beforehand. What good girl would go out in the middle of the night? If she's not here to harm someone, she's probably meeting her lover."
He Wangshi was absolutely certain, but out of consideration for Li Guihua, she held back her words a little.
She believed she had caught a woman red-handed, accusing her of being a shameless woman who went out to have an affair in the middle of the night.
Su An took a deep breath, put one hand on his hip, and raised his voice.
"You have more mouths than other people, don't you? Your little mouth keeps chattering away. Don't you know not to interrupt when others are speaking?"
"You're just trying to smear me. You came to the well in the middle of the night to put poison in it, and when I saw you, you cried 'stop thief!' Why don't you ask someone to come and test what kind of medicine is in the water stains on the ground!"
Su An exhaled a breath of stale air, feeling much better. He hated people who interrupted him.
Not only did He Wangshi interrupt her, but she also muddied the waters.
She's gone mad, spreading rumors about her family.
Unfortunately, she fell into the water, and when she climbed out, she wet a large area of grass, completely destroying the traces of the pesticide.
He Wangshi covered her face with her hands and wailed, "I don't want to live anymore! This whole family is bullying an old woman like me. Is there no justice in this world?"
“My son! Look at the daughter you wanted to marry, she’s driving her former mother-in-law to her death. She might as well be dead.”
He Wangshi slowly got up and was about to run to the well.
Su An crossed her arms in front of her, watching her make a scene with a mocking expression.
If she couldn't answer his questions, she would cry, make a scene, and threaten suicide; a distance of two steps took her the length of an incense stick.
There weren't any nails on the road to her house, so why was she unable to walk?
"Let her jump! No one is allowed to stop her!"
Madam He looked bewildered and stopped awkwardly.
