Chapter 107 [Post-Apocalyptic Reconstruction] Mutant Potatoes

The development of G City was proceeding in an orderly manner. Xu Milu also mingled with the reclamation team, sleeping and eating with the others. No one doubted the origins of this "young man" who joined the reclamation team halfway through.

Before she could even find out the news, she was almost driven away by the stench of her roommate's feet.

The pioneering team of a hundred people mostly slept together at night. It was okay when the air was ventilated during the day, but at night, the smell of sweat, body odor, and stinky feet mixed together. The snoring and teeth grinding at night were like firecrackers. If she hadn't been so resilient, she would have fainted on the first day.

Fortunately, Xu Milu was not one to sit idly by. She handed over both crystal cores she had collected, and the next day she was transferred to help out at the temporary dining car as she had hoped.

Xu Milu gripped the kitchen knife, seemingly wanting to say something but then stopping herself.

We're still going around in circles, oh well.

However, the temporary food truck was crowded and noisy, which allowed her to gather a lot of information about this dimension.

It turns out that, under the invasion of the zombie virus, many creatures in this world have undergone some kind of irreversible mutation.

This mutation is particularly rapid in animals and plants. In the decade following the apocalypse, the appearance of some common plants or animals began to change, gradually transforming into other unrecognizable creatures.

For example, even mild and harmless edible plants like corn and potatoes, which were safe and harmless before the apocalypse, have undergone mutations. It seems that these plants, which rely on the earth for survival, have completely abandoned their former gentleness.

"This is... a potato?"

Xu Milu, wearing an apron and holding an iron spoon, sat on a small stool, looking slightly cramped.

She stared in disbelief at the basket of oddly shaped "potatoes" in front of her.

These "potatoes" were different from the yellow rootstocks she remembered. The pink, round lumps were only the size of ping-pong balls, with countless tiny hairy roots splitting out from the dotted bud pits, and tiny peanut-like fruits attached to the hairy roots.

Further up, instead of the pale green, vibrant feathery leaves one might expect, there are deep purple plant stems and leaves that look thin and weak, as if they were malnourished, and seem as if they could be torn apart with the slightest force.

At the end of the stem and leaves is a cluster of leaves resembling a calyx, half-open, wrapping a black and white "eyeball". When the pink tuber is torn off, the plant will make a faint "waa" sound to protest.

"Waaaaaah!"

"Wow wow."

"Wah wah wah".

"Wow wow."

One potato making a fuss isn't scary, but a whole basket of potatoes making a fuss all at once is a bit indescribable.

Especially these flower buds that look exactly like human eyeballs, because they are not edible, are carelessly discarded on the ground. Unsuspecting passersby might even think that some horrific massacre has taken place here.

"yes."

Xiao Ding, the helper in charge of cooking, was a young girl with dimples when she smiled. Hearing this, I couldn't help but look at her strangely:

"Don't all potatoes look the same? What's so strange about this? Oh, what you've seen before might be mutated potatoes that have been domesticated at the base. These are wild potatoes collected from the wild, so they just look a little scary."

Is this what you call a little scary?

The eyeballs on top are moving!

Is this thing really edible?

Xu Milu had a lot of complaints but couldn't express them, so she could only silently use an iron spoon to dig out the "eyeballs" one by one from the center of the mutated potato flower.

These "eyeballs" feel sticky to the touch, and they make a lot of noise when you touch them lightly. The texture is too complicated to describe.

Seeing that she was in low spirits, Xiao Ding misunderstood something and simply moved a stool over to sit down and comfort her:

"Are you complaining that the daily contribution points from the temporary food truck are too low? Originally, everyone's meals were delivered from the base by flying food trucks. Sometimes, encountering mutated animals on the way would delay the delivery, or the food simply couldn't be delivered."

Captain Nalan managed to get permission from the base to set up a temporary food truck for the reclamation team. A special collection team gathers vegetables and meat. Although the taste isn't as good as the improved vegetables at the base, at least they won't go hungry!

"Captain Nalan?"

Xu Milu asked curiously, "Is he the head of the dispatch team responsible for cleaning up G City?"

On her first day in this plane, her unique characteristics attracted a large flock of birds, which almost led to her being mistaken for an infected person and shot. It was only thanks to the dispatch team leader's approval that she was allowed into the pioneering team.

Xiao Ding assumed that:

"Yes, Captain Nalan is exceptionally capable. When Dr. Su was trapped in the A City base due to the zombie horde, it was Captain Nalan who led the dispatch team to rescue him."

As she spoke, she seemed to remember something and added, "Don't worry, we hope that the base has complete infrastructure, sufficient weapons, and a population several times that of the A City base. In addition, with such capable people as Captain Nalan and Dr. Su, we are not afraid of even a zombie horde."

Was the A City base destroyed?

Xu Milu's breath hitched. She remembered that Su He and Li Doudou had gone to the base in City A back then...

Are there any survivors in City A?

Xu Milu frowned, recalling the map she had seen before, and calculating the travel time from G City to A City.

Suhe had already completed her evolution and was among the first batch of "new humans" to evolve. In addition, she left behind a lot of supplies and taught him many ways to survive the apocalypse. Under the protection of the human government, the two children and Li Doudou should not have a bad life.

She wasn't remorseful for her initial decision; for two helpless children, going to the survivor base was the best option for survival. However, her hatred for Lavinia, who brought the zombie virus to this dimension, only intensified.
