On the boundless sea, there was a faint calm before a storm. The usually transparent shallow sea had changed color, turning into a deep, inky black.
Meanwhile, in the middle of the ocean, beneath the storm clouds, a rapidly rotating waterspout was hurtling toward Pearl City at an extremely terrifying speed.
"God of Gourmet Food, this is the first time I've ever seen such a strange waterspout. It moves very fast, but it doesn't seem to be naturally formed. Could it be caused by a sea monster from the deep sea?"
Nanako changed her clothes and stood next to Xu Milu, holding her egg. Her face showed no panic; instead, she comforted Xu Milu.
“Miss Milu, don’t be afraid. Tata is just worried that you’ve never seen a waterspout before, which is why you’re so nervous. There won’t be any storms in Pearl City, let alone waterspouts. They will disappear on their own.”
Xu Milu was slightly embarrassed. She couldn't explain to Nanako that this thing might be a "little cloud" that she had summoned on a whim.
Seeing Nanako's calm demeanor, she could only secretly chant the incantation and control the wisp of air to head into the desolate deep sea.
She never dreamed that a minor spell from the Journey to the West world would be so powerful here. The steps were exactly the same, but the effect was magnified hundreds of times.
"..."
This was Xu Milu's first time controlling such a large air mass, and she soon felt a bit strained. Fortunately, the waterspout changed direction and swirled past Pearl City, thus averting a man-made disaster.
What is that?
Xu Milu was suddenly stunned. When the ball of energy she was controlling passed by Pearl City, it was obvious that it had hit something on the seabed, but when she looked around, there was nothing on the surface of the sea.
Is it a reef?
She calmed herself down, pretending to admire the scenery, and while hooking her arm around the tornado, she took advantage of it to brush past Pearl City again, examining it carefully. As her efforts paid off, she noticed something was wrong when she passed an underwater cliff.
The entire Pearl City is alive!
Or rather, the land beneath Pearl City is alive!
She vaguely sensed that a pair of enormous eyes were staring at "her" from below Pearl City.
The "undersea land" at the foot of Mingzhu City is covered with silt over the years and looks no different from the seabed, but with the help of the tornado, she can vaguely see the whole picture.
Those eyes were deep and bright, the blue of the sea. The owner of those eyes seemed to possess human wisdom, staring helplessly and calmly at the tornado on the sea surface, as if looking at an ignorant child.
It's too big.
So large that just one glance could instill fear, such a behemoth seemed to exist only in legends.
Huge whales and sharks swam past it, looking as small as pebbles. Schools of fish darted around it, and corals grew on its back. It lay there with its eyes closed, alone and quiet on the seabed, its existence unknown to anyone.
"call--"
The waterspout slowly dissipated, and the thunderclouds in the sky gradually dissipated as well. Xu Milu came back to her senses and gently exhaled.
Although it was only for a moment, she still managed to see it thanks to the tornado.
What supports the city of Pearl is not land, nor is it a reef, but a colossal whale-like beast.
It seemed to possess human-like intelligence, lying quietly on the seabed. The sudden dissipation of the tornado was also caused by it opening its mouth to inhale seawater and disperse it.
That enormous beast was much larger than the giant ape Xu Milu had seen in the Forest of Garrison. Even a tornado a hundred meters high looked like a small toy in front of it.
The siren clan living in Pearl City were like ants living on the back of a giant whale, while the giant whale was like a piece of real land, silent and quiet.
Humans are born with a fear of giant objects and the deep sea, and when these two things are combined, even Xu Milu is somewhat apprehensive.
"Look, Miss Milu, the tornado has dissipated!"
Nanako looked exceptionally proud:
"Due to its unique geographical location, Pearl City is never hit by tsunamis or tornadoes, which creates the best environment for raising Lolo Pigs! Therefore, Lolo Pigs from Pearl City are recognized as a delicacy throughout the entire Gourmet Continent!"
Indeed, with such a massive creature around, tsunamis are nothing to worry about.
Xu Milu felt a pang of sympathy and couldn't help but stomp her feet on the sand.
Pearl City has a history of at least several hundred years. Could such a giant beast have remained motionless here for hundreds of years?
Did the siren clan know about this?
Xu Milu seemed to be deep in thought.
...
...
Xu Milu rented a boat and sailed out of Pearl City. Three days later, she returned to the city with a boat full of pearls.
Despite being known as the "Mermaid Capital" of Pearl City, no one could produce so many pearls all at once. Baskets of pearls were laid out on the deck, their dazzling light almost blinding everyone.
"My goodness! Is this a merchant fleet? Where did all these pearls come from?"
"So many precious white pearls!"
"Look! It's that human gourmet hunter!"
"Black hair and golden eyes? I know, it's Lady Milu, the one featured in 'Food Magazine' who discovered the spicy menu!!"
"Milu-sama!?"
"My God, God of Gourmet Food, these pearls are enough to buy the entire Pearl City!!"
Amidst the crowd, some eyes were filled with excitement, others with envy, and still others with greed. Xu Milu's gaze remained unwavering as she pushed herself up with her hands and jumped off the deck.
Pearl City belongs to the territory of the Siren Kingdom. Apart from the mayor, the highest-ranking person in the city is Baron Ahai, who was already waiting with Nanako at the city hall.
