"Great Sage, are you sober now?"
Sun Wukong pulled a tuft of monkey hair from his nose and grunted twice:
"Even if I'm drunk, the stench of this tofu will wake me up. Only that idiot Pigsy can stand it, going to Master's every day to look for this fried tofu to eat—"
Yin Wenjiao and the monk Sanzang had already sold all the tofu and gone home, leaving only Sun Wukong and the clumsy Ah Chou in the shop.
"I never expected Sister Yin to be so good at making tofu."
Xu Milu opened the oil paper package, revealing the still-warm vegetarian steamed buns inside:
"Great Sage, try this! I just bought these auspicious steamed buns on the street. They're filled with red bean paste. Eating them will bring you good fortune and cure all your illnesses for the whole year to come!"
In the Tang Dynasty, "mantou" was a type of steamed bun filled with various fillings. Meat buns were called meat mantou, and vegetarian buns were called vegetarian mantou. They were large and delicious, with a soft, wheaty aroma in every bite.

Sun Wukong took a bite of the plain steamed bun and looked at her with his eyes: "You weren't in the shop, and that fire spirit doesn't listen to me. It won't even boil water. Go pour me a cup of hot tea, and I'll explain everything to you in detail."
Xu Milu obediently boiled water and poured tea, even placing two dried dates in the teacup:
"Great Sage, tell me, why would this Fairy of Gusha be willing to give me these two treasures for no reason?"
"Let's put everything else aside for now and get down to business."
Sun Wukong squinted, picked up the two dates with his hairy hands, ate them, and spat them out with a "poof," which landed right on Xu Milu's knee.
Xu Milu felt a numbness in her knees, and she fell forward with a "thud," giving Sun Wukong a solid kowtow.
"The Great Sage?"
Something seemed to descend from the heavens, but it only lasted for a moment. Xu Milu looked up blankly, not knowing what had happened.
But look at the Monkey King sitting on the stool, beaming with joy:
"Oh, my good disciple, my good disciple!"
? ? ? ?
Xu Milu looked up, completely stunned.
Is this how apprenticeship is done?
Did happiness come so suddenly?
