Chapter 350 Girl Wheat & Coincidences Within Coincidences

After sampling a few "planetary specialties," Xu Milu followed the instructions and found her accommodation for the night—a mini capsule house located in the engineering institute's staff quarters.

Residents entering the shelter don't need to worry about housing prices at all. The government will allocate housing based on the specific circumstances of each household. After Xu Milu's information was entered into the database by Xiao Qi, the Housing Authority immediately arranged her accommodation.

The apartment building where Xu Milu is resting tonight is over a hundred stories high. The gray elevators go up and down between the floors, and the residents, who have been busy all day, are like weary birds returning to their nests, exchanging greetings with each other.

"Engineer Liu, you're back! How was your day?"

"Hey! It's nothing special, but I heard that the company is giving out employee benefits in a couple of days, and every household will get a bottle of oil—"

"Really? Is this news accurate? I'll ask my brother-in-law tomorrow. He works as a cleaner in the logistics department of the engineering bureau. Maybe he can know some inside information."

"Uncle Ding, have you eaten yet?"

"Xiao Wan went to the hospital to see your dad again? Is your dad feeling better lately?"

Even when Xu Milu was in the elevator, a young woman gave her a kind smile—here, the distance between people seemed to be infinitely shortened.

The residential compound is structured like a "pigeon coop," with rooms divided according to family units and distributed on each floor. The narrow and crowded corridors are enclosed by glass, and each room has a door number and electronic information marked on the door.

Xu Milu's young face naturally attracted a lot of attention. Judging from the room key card, the room to her right was occupied by a white woman with her son, while the room to her left was occupied by a family of three, all of whom were Chinese.

【drop--】

[Hello, Xu Milu, Intermediate Engineering Technician.]

The electronic door opened with a click, revealing a space of only five square meters. The room had no other decorations; a standard-sized bed and a desk were all the furniture. The only advantage it could be called was the floor-to-ceiling window next to the bed, which offered a panoramic view of Shanghai.

Xu Milu closed the door, and the lights inside immediately turned on, displaying a large time reminder on the wall:

【50:08:45】

"This room is way too small."

Xu Milu didn't turn on the lights. Instead, she sat by the floor-to-ceiling window and looked down. The night was deep, and outside the window, she could see wisps of smoke-like clouds drifting between the tall buildings. Dots of orange-yellow lights lit up on the ground, as if the city was breathing.

...

...

"Gurgle—"

She touched her stomach and immediately felt an emptiness inside.

Xu Milu has a big appetite to begin with, and she has been busy with the tour all day, only eating a few skewers of grilled earthworms and fried cicada pupae. So she is naturally feeling hungry now.

Because she wanted to learn more about this world, Xu Milu didn't plan to end her journey. Just a couple of days ago, she steamed several baskets of meat buns in the Journey to the West world, which she had almost forgotten about in her system inventory. Now it was perfect to take them out for a late-night snack.

No matter how long food is stored in the system slot, it will always be in a freshly stored state when taken out. So when the meat bun is taken out, it is still steaming hot and juicy when you take a bite.

The room was only so big, so Xu Milu simply put the steamer on the table and enjoyed the Shanghai night view while munching on the buns—the oily and juicy braised pork buns were large with thin skins, and the meat filling inside was like a large four-happiness meatball. The aroma of wheat and meat soothed her restless stomach.

For some reason, she felt particularly hungry today.

[Ding-dong]

The doorbell suddenly rang. Xu Milu was a little confused. She didn't know anyone here, so why would someone knock on the door so late?

Thinking this, she still opened the door and looked down to see a little girl standing outside who only reached her waist. She was wearing a red cotton-padded jacket, had a bob haircut, and looked very well-behaved.

The little girl looked at Xu Milu with a somewhat timid expression, and she was still clutching a checkered down comforter in her arms.

"Sister, my mom asked me to give this to you. She said you just moved in today, and she saw you in the elevator without any luggage, so she asked me to bring you a quilt. My mom said it's all new and clean."

The little girl seemed a bit shy, spoke incoherently, and kept turning her head to look at the room next door.

Xu Milu immediately guessed that the little girl's mother was probably the young woman she had met in the elevator earlier. The woman was worried that she wouldn't have a blanket to cover herself with at night, so she asked her daughter to bring it over.

It's hard to imagine that the inhabitants of this earth seem so united, like a colony of ants stuck together.

She thought for a moment, then, instead of refusing the other person's kindness, she smiled and took the blanket, patting the little girl's head.

"Thank you so much, little friend! You've really helped me a lot. I was worried I wouldn't have a blanket to cover myself with tonight. What's your name?"

The little girl seemed encouraged; her face flushed red with embarrassment, and she clenched her fists, whispering shyly:

“Wheat, my name is Wheat.”

"Thank you, little wheat. Here, this is for you. Consider it a thank you gift, okay?"

Xu Milu squatted down and, as if by magic, produced a large, bright red apple and placed it in Mai Zi's hand:

"My name is Xu Milu, you can call me Sister Xu. From now on, we'll be friends, okay?"

It's red, smooth, and fragrant—something I've never seen before.

Mai Zi couldn't help but widen her eyes, carefully examining the apple in her hand. Her little mouth moved, and finally, a puzzled expression appeared on her face:

"Sister, what... is this?"

Xu Milu suddenly felt a pang of sadness. At this age, which child on Earth isn't pampered by their parents? Yet Mai Zi didn't even know what an apple was.
