Chapter 64 Eat Radishes in Winter and Ginger in Summer

To avoid alerting the people in the store, Xu Milu went to the restaurant two hours in advance to prepare the goods.

Half of the ingredients needed today were ordered from the market. The butcher delivered the ingredients she ordered to the store around 4 a.m. They were all freshly slaughtered that morning and were still steaming.

Xu Milu carried a pig leg in each hand and easily entered the kitchen's cold storage, leaving the butcher speechless and giving her a thumbs-up.

Holy crap! That's awesome, beautiful lady!

She didn't seem to feel anything.

Old Liu had been so bored at home these past few days that he was practically going crazy. When he heard that they could open for business today, he was overjoyed and wanted to help Xu Milu prepare the goods.

He's been teaching his apprentices at the shop every day lately. Da Liu and Xiao Mo usually cook the dishes, but he won't let anyone else do the cooking for their signature dish, braised pork with yellow wine.

Every day, the old man would put on his chef's hat, grab a plate of peanuts, and sit down in the shop. He couldn't be happier.

When the old man opened the trunk of Xu Milu's "hearse-like" vehicle, he almost screamed in fright:

"What, what is this?! Rice?!"

Xu Milu removed the seats from the back of the black van, partitioned it in front and back, and turned it into a large mobile freezer. Two thick radishes, each as tall as a person, were squeezed inside, their lush green leaves making them look like a large bonsai.

"Grandpa Radish."

Xu Milu ripped off the large radish, revealing mushroom pieces cut into the size of tree stumps inside.

"This is a radish? Don't try to fool me, there's no such thing as a radish this big!!"

Old Liu glared and, with some curiosity, reached out to touch it. It was indeed a radish; when pinched, it oozed water, and a spicy aroma immediately filled the air.

Undeterred, he went back to the kitchen, grabbed a cleaver, and chopped off a section. Inside, the radish flesh was white and juicy, showing no signs of becoming mushy.

"It really is a radish! How come this radish is so long? How did it grow like that? Oh my!"

This head is terrifying! Even two thick radish hands couldn't wrap around it, and the green radish leaves hanging down could almost completely submerge Xu Milu.

"Grandpa, this is a new variety, a giant and delicious radish, and a giant and delicious mushroom. Isn't it said that you should eat radish in winter and ginger in summer? So let's have a radish feast today."

Xu Milu patted the big radish and said with a grin:

"I also brought some really good honey this time. I have some at home. You can drink a little every morning; it'll be good for your health."

The peach-head mica is incredibly thoughtful; its large head is a natural honey storage container, and the honey it produces is fragrant, sweet, and mellow—a sweetness that bees fed with white sugar on Earth cannot produce.

Who knew that as soon as Old Liu saw the mushroom pieces cut into "tree stumps," he smuggled the trunk shut like a thief:

"Are you stupid? Your restaurant thrives on these ingredients. If people find out how special your radish is, it'll be a disaster! Hurry up and get me a knife to cut this radish into pieces, the smaller the better. It'll be too late when Da Liu and Xiao Mo arrive."

Xu Milu was both amused and exasperated, never expecting that Old Liu's first reaction upon seeing these gigantic vegetables would be this.

But she couldn't dissuade the old man, so she resigned herself to taking the knife and cutting the radish into basketball-sized cubes with him. Even so, the radish cubes and mushroom cubes still looked huge.

When Da Liu and Xiao Mo came to work, they naturally saw baskets and baskets of radish and mushroom chunks. Xiao Mo was about to ask something when Old Liu glared at him and shut him up.

"Do you even know what a trade secret is? Hurry up and move these things to the cold storage."

Well, the old man is quite fashionable; he even used the term "trade secret."

...

...

The rice food shop had been closed for nearly a week, and when they heard that it had reopened, their regular customers were almost moved to tears.

I've never seen such a capricious boss.

No sooner had Xiao Tao hung up the menu for the month than Cui Shengguo arrived with his in-law, Uncle Jiang.

"You two have such keen senses! You come knocking as soon as you have a new trick up your sleeve? I was just about to call you!"

Old Liu was sitting at the front desk drinking honey water when he saw the two of them and laughed and scolded them, "Xu Milu was afraid that drinking alcohol would harm his health, so she replaced all the liquor in his thermos with honey water."

There weren't many people in the store at the moment; a few waiters were busy wiping tables, making it look rather deserted.

Cui Shengguo sniffed it, and suddenly his eyes lit up: "This is good stuff! Is this wild honey? Your granddaughter is so filial, she always puts you first when it comes to good things."

"Go away, go away, just say you're trying to scam my honey."

Old Liu pretended to be reluctant as he carefully protected the thermos in his hand, then cheerfully greeted Grandpa Jiang:

"Professor Jiang, you're here for dinner? We have some really good stuff today, stuff you can't get anywhere else, it's incredibly fresh!"

Old Liu has little formal education, but he admires cultured people like Grandpa Jiang.

Grandpa Jiang looked into the kitchen, somewhat puzzled: "Da Mi can cook by herself now?"

Cui Shengguo also looked surprised: "Little brother, you're really at ease with this?"

"What's there to worry about? Dami has been learning from me for so long, who else would I trust if not her? You can eat without worry today, and if you have any problems, just come to me."

Old Liu waved his hand, feeling quite confident.

Just kidding, others might not know his three tricks, but he knows them himself, doesn't he?

His granddaughter's comprehension is as frightening as a radish; if this continues, his old man's resources will be almost completely depleted.

If I were to say this outside, I doubt anyone would believe me.

...

...

Xu Milu was busy in the kitchen. She had ordered today's menu, and Old Man Liu hadn't interfered at all.
