Chapter 50 Border Warfare

Li Ruochen stood atop the city wall, gazing into the distance. The people commanding the troops in the distant military camp were definitely not barbarians.

These barbarians are indeed incredibly fierce, but they have very little experience in siege warfare, even though it's been a year and a half.

Each attack by the enemy lasted only one hour, and then another group of soldiers would launch a continuous attack in the next hour, giving the defenders no chance to catch their breath.

Such a tactic could not possibly have been conceived by barbarians. The border troops were not numerous to begin with, and if they continued to defend like this, even the strongest men would not be able to hold out. With no other option, Li Ruochen had to urgently request reinforcements.

But looking at the reinforcements that had been brought in from the west side of the city wall, Li Ruochen felt no relief whatsoever; these guys were utterly useless.

Fortunately, they were only defending the city. If they were sent out to fight these barbarians, their two thousand men probably wouldn't even make a ripple.

I don't know where they found such a completely useless army, but its biggest advantage is that it can provide support very quickly.

Just as Li Ruochen was observing the battlefield situation, Li Jiangong suddenly ran over and said, "General, barbarian scouts have started appearing on the mountain road to the east. It is estimated that a small unit will infiltrate directly."

Li Ruochen's expression was dark and unreadable. He had known about the mountain road to the east from the beginning, but now he was powerless to control it. If these people managed to get around to his back, even a small force could have a huge impact.

Looking at the soldiers who were struggling to defend the city, Li Ruochen gritted his teeth and said, "Third Uncle, I can only entrust this matter to you. Take your personal guards and make sure to guard the mountain road. Do not let a single soldier pass through."

"Leave this matter to me, but our situation on the front lines is also very bad. If this continues, it will be difficult to resolve."

"The other side has not sent any information, they are just attacking the city. If these barbarians really want to break through the border, they can only send reinforcements. I hope the court can take this seriously."

Li Jiangong said with a wry smile, "General, you should think this through. Given the current situation, it is still unknown whether reinforcements will arrive in the short term. If things are not going well, we should retreat first."

Li Ruochen said decisively, "We know that this time is different from the others. Once the border is lost, we don't know what kind of impact it will have. Moreover, apart from Jiangyang City, no other city can stop these people's attacks. What will happen to the rest of them?"

"Ruochen, I know you care about the people, but sometimes you have to bow your head. Can fighting to the death really change this situation?"

Li Ruochen waved his hand, "Third Uncle, on the battlefield, you should address me as General. I have already given you the orders, so go and carry them out immediately."

Li Jiangong knew that his niece was determined, and could only pray that the border could be defended indefinitely.

Li Jiangong's departure only took away a small part of himself and did not have a significant impact on the overall situation. Li Ruochen, on the other hand, remained steadfast on the city wall. She knew that she had to give these soldiers enough confidence.

Fortunately, thanks to Ning Ye's previous supply of provisions, Li Ruochen no longer has any worries about logistics.

Suddenly, during the next round of the barbarians' attack, a man clad in heavy armor charged up the city wall. Ordinary soldiers couldn't last a single round against him, and his large sword could even cleave a person in two with a single strike.

A centurion immediately charged at the man, but the man easily dodged his spear the moment it was thrust out, and then the broadsword grazed the spear and severed the centurion's hands.

The centurion's head was severed from his body in the next second, while the man roared and charged at the others.

For a moment, the soldiers were so frightened by this guy that they dared not move forward. But this was on the city wall, and even if they retreated, where could they go?

Just as the man was wreaking havoc, he suddenly felt a murderous aura coming from him. He turned around and saw Li Ruochen holding a long sword and heading straight for his back.

But the man was not afraid at all, and instead laughed loudly, "I've always heard that the person guarding this border is a woman, and I didn't expect it to be true. This is not a place for women."

After Qing Songge blocked Li Ruochen's attack, the man said again, "Why is the young lady wearing a veil? Take it off and let me see. If you are pretty, I will take you back to be my concubine."

Li Ruochen remained silent, but the sword in his hand had already formed a continuous sword momentum. He really didn't take this big, clumsy guy seriously; apart from his superior strength, he was probably far inferior in other aspects.

The man quickly realized that his attack was completely useless. No matter how fierce his knife was, it could not touch Li Ruochen at all. On the contrary, Li Ruochen's sword was cutting his limbs along the gaps in the armor.

After only a dozen or so rounds of fighting, the man was already bleeding profusely beneath his heavy armor.

By the time the man realized he was likely to lose, it was too late for regrets.

Li Ruochen leaped into the air, exposing his entire defense to the man, as if he wanted to deliver a fatal blow. Right before the man's eyes, the longsword was thrust directly into his eye.

In his final moments, the man realized that the hand holding the knife had been completely paralyzed, leaving him with no chance of fighting back.

When Li Ruochen beheaded the man, all the soldiers erupted in cheers.

"Gentlemen, they are nothing but barbarians. Do you think we can lose to such people? I don't think so. So fight to the death and show them what real soldiers are."

All the shouts merged into one: "Victory! Victory!"

Inside the barbarian camp, a man dressed in white didn't seem to care much about what was happening on the city wall.

"You think you can win by relying on your individual strength? You're too impatient. It's only been a short time, and you're already trying to take on a tough nut?"

A man exuding a fierce aura said, "It's not your men who died, so you don't care. Do you know how many soldiers I've lost during these days of siege?"

The man in white smiled slightly, "You begged me to come, so you have no choice but to listen to me. If you want to back out, I can leave now."

Zhamut snorted, "It's not far from the time you set. If you can't break through by then, I won't let you off the hook."
