☆, Chapter 8 Sorry, I'm just used to being alone

It was a cloudless night with a chilly evening breeze.

The next morning, Wen Yuci was sitting on the sofa reading a newspaper. Not long after, he heard the sound of a door closing upstairs.

He looked towards the stairs to the second floor. The girl had a slender figure and was wearing a simple white dress without any extra accessories.

Shu Wanning happened to look up at him, and their eyes met in mid-air.

Her eyebrows were long and delicate, and the look she gave him was as calm as a pool of still water, without any ripples.

Shu Wanning walked downstairs, sat at a corner of the dining table, and greeted him: "Good morning, Mr. Wen."

She ate very quickly as before, then got up and went upstairs. When she came downstairs, her lips were covered with lipstick that enhanced her complexion.

In the courtyard, Yan Hao, who had been digesting the whole night, opened the car door with a little excitement. Shu Wanning got in the car, tilted his head to look out the window and remained silent.

The car was eerily quiet. Yan Hao turned his head slightly and couldn't help asking, "Ms. Shu, aren't you curious about how we got your ID?"

Shu Wanning finally turned around to look at him, as if she had been paused for a few seconds, and then shook her head: "Not curious."

The words Yan Hao had prepared suddenly retracted into his stomach, and he turned back awkwardly. Wen Yuci in the back seat tilted his head to look at the person next to him.

"Ms. Shu, if you don't want to, it's still not too late to send you back."

Shu Wanning slowly turned her head to look at him. This time the distance was closer, and she leaned against the car window somewhat uncomfortably.

He was still wearing a black suit and leather shoes, with his collar and cuffs buttoned meticulously.

His eyebrows and eyes were very beautiful, with smooth eyebrows, shallow double eyelids, and upward curves at the corners of his eyes. His black eyes under the gold-rimmed glasses were staring at her closely.

His lips were not thick, but they were slightly pursed, showing that he was not very happy at the moment.

Shu Wanning retracted his gaze and explained, "Sorry, I'm just used to being alone."

Hearing this, Wen Yuci said, "After we get the marriage certificate, I'll take you to meet my grandmother. After that, you'll have free time."

"Okay, thank you Mr. Wen."

Wen Yuci: "There's no need to be so distant."

"Okay, Mr. Wen..."

Wen Yuci had made arrangements in advance, and he took his men straight to the Civil Affairs Bureau. When taking pictures, the distance between the two of them seemed to be enough to accommodate Yan Hao.

The staff member pointed to his lips and said, "You two should move a little closer and smile, just for a moment."

Shu Wanning took another step towards Wen Yuci and looked at the camera. The expressions of both of them were colder than the other.

When Shu Wanning got the red book, she glanced at it calmly and handed it to Wen Yuci: "Sorry, I didn't bring my bag."

Wen Yuci put the two marriage certificates into his trouser pockets, then unbuttoned his suit and draped it over Shu Wanning's shoulders.

Shu Wanning was originally daydreaming, but the warmth on her shoulder brought her back to her senses. She turned her head to look at Wen Yuci, who was looking at her sideways.

There was a gentleness in his eyes and every move he made showed his good gentlemanly demeanor.

Wen Yuci: "Let's go, I'll take you back to the old house."

The early autumn wind was chilly and the air conditioner was on in the car. Shu Wanning took off his suit and handed it over.

Wen Yuci didn't answer and said calmly, "It will be cold after you get off the bus."

The old house was located in a remote area, and Shu Wanning was about to fall asleep when she finally felt the car slowly stop.

Shu Wanning's hand was on the door, and Wen Yuci suddenly grabbed her arm and said, "Grandma is the only one in the old house who needs respect. If you meet other people, don't bother."

Shu Wanning nodded, and after getting off the car, Wen Yuci took her slightly cold hand and wrapped it in his palm.

Shu Wanning didn't resist and let him lead her. Her eyes fell on the gravel road under her feet. She felt a little uncomfortable in her high heels.

The person next to her suddenly slowed down and, at a fork in the road, led her to a cobblestone path on the side.

Wen Yuci walked through the corridor and stopped in front of a house. He tilted his head to look at her and whispered, "Grandma has a good temper, don't be afraid."

Shu Wanning nodded: "I'm not afraid."

When the door was opened, the person inside nodded as soon as he saw Wen Yuci. When he saw Shu Wanning beside him, he was about to say something but was interrupted by Wen Yuci shaking his head.

Grandma Wen was sleeping. Perhaps she noticed someone coming into the room. She slowly opened her eyes and cleared her throat: "Who's here?"

"grandmother."

Wen Yuci called out and pulled Shu Wanning into the house. The servant helped Grandma Wen up and placed a pillow behind her.

She looked towards the door and heard Wen Yuci's voice. A kind smile appeared on her old face.

When she saw Wen Yuci come in and holding the girl's hand, Grandma Wen sat up straight.

Shu Wanning looked at Grandma Wen, lowered her head, and said softly, "Hello, Grandma."

"Okay, okay, girl, you and Yu Ci..."

Wen Yuci lowered his head and replied, "Grandma, she is Shu Wanning, your granddaughter-in-law."

"Ahem...granddaughter-in-law?"

Shu Wanning nodded. Afraid that she wouldn't believe him, Wen Yuci took out the marriage certificate from his pocket and placed it in Grandma Wen's palm: "Grandma, it's true."

Grandma Wen opened the marriage certificate half-believingly, and then suddenly picked up the crutch beside the bed and hit Wen Yuci. He didn't dodge and was hit hard.

"Wen Yuci! Have you forgotten all the etiquette grandma taught you? You've already got the marriage certificate, but have you given the betrothal gift? Have you held the wedding yet?"

Wen Yuci lowered his head and replied, "Not yet. I was afraid that he would run away, so I brought him back to show you first."

Grandma Wen gently stroked the marriage certificate and waved to Shu Wanning: "Come here, girl, come to grandma."

Shu Wanning sat next to Grandma Wen. She pulled her hand over and patted it, and she held her hand in return.

Grandma Wen: "Wan Ning, I'm so sorry that you were kidnapped back home by him. Don't worry, you must follow the proper etiquette and don't let him deceive you."

Shu Wanning shook her head: "Grandma, don't worry. I'm not wronged. I don't care about those things."

Grandma Wen looked at Wen Yuci with dissatisfaction: "No wonder you don't like those girls grandma found. It turns out you already have someone in your heart. Why didn't you tell grandma earlier?"

Her eyes kept moving between the two of them. She sighed deeply in her heart and looked at Wen Yuci with increasing dissatisfaction.

"Let's have lunch first," she said.

Shu Wanning looked at Wen Yuci, and when she saw him nod, she said "Okay".

Grandma Wen tilted her head and coughed twice, then said, "Yu Ci, take Wan Ning for a walk around the old house. I'll come over after I take my medicine."

The Wen family's old house is located in a remote area, quiet and peaceful, with many green bamboos planted in the garden.

Shu Wanning followed Wen Yuci. After they walked away, he stopped and turned back to ask, "Are you okay? If you're not feeling well, let's go back first."

"fine."

There was a carp pond in the garden. Wen Yuci took out a box of fish food from a nearby shelf, handed it to Shu Wanning, and asked, "Do you want to feed the fish?"

Shu Wanning took it, lightly twisted the fish food with his fingertips and threw it into the water. The carp didn't seem too hungry, and swam two circles and symbolically ate a few grains.

"elder brother!!!"

The sudden shouting startled Shu Wanning so much that her hand trembled, spilling the fish food into the pond. Feeling somewhat guilty, she looked at Wen Yuci and asked, "Are they going to die of starvation?"

"Probably not. If you die of it... just say Wen Yuming did it."
