Chapter 10: Human Life is at Stake

There was a river not far behind their greenhouse, connected to the fields outside. The series of screams were obviously from a group of children, which scared Shen Chunhua so much that she ran out quickly. Aunt Wang hesitated for three seconds, and when she saw Shen Chunhua go out, she gritted her teeth and stomped her feet and ran out after her.

As soon as she stepped out of the door, a spark suddenly flashed in Chen Chunhua's mind. Her hands were faster than her brain. She picked up a long stick placed beside the shed and rushed to the river.

I saw several children around four or five years old crawling inside. One of them was the third child of Chen Chunhua's family, Lin Shuchao.

"Mom... wuwuwu..." Lin Shuchao cried even louder after seeing his biological mother, calling out breathlessly, "Niu Niu... Niu Niu..."

"Niu Niu? Lin Erniu? What happened to him? Tell me quickly!" Chen Chunhua asked anxiously, without stopping, she walked quickly towards the river. Lin Shumei was shaken in the backpack behind her, but she didn't cry.

Lin Shuchao had just run inside, but now he had to follow his mother and run back to the river.

"He fell into the water! Niu Niu fell into the water..."

Chen Chunhua and Aunt Wang were both horrified and ran even faster.

Because the children's shouting was too noisy and chaotic, people in other sheds and fields were also attracted by the shouting.

From the nursery area came the angry shouts of the female tyrant.

"You guys are going to die! You're not working anymore! You're just watching the fun! Whoever leaves will have their work points deducted!"

Chen Chunhua had already spotted the struggling head in the river. She immediately placed the backpack beside the tree and shouted at her two children, "Right here! Don't take a single step out!"

There were still tears on Lin Shuchao's little face. He nodded suddenly when he heard the words. He hugged the not-so-thick tree trunk next to him tightly with one hand, and held the hand of his little sister who was lying in the backpack with the other hand.

Chen Chunhua can't water, and neither can Aunt Wang. In this water town farm, they are both rare landlubbers.

Fortunately, the river wasn't wide and the current wasn't fast, but the problem was that it was too deep for adults, let alone children. Furthermore, the water was freezing cold in early spring, and the cow's strength to struggle upwards was dwindling.

Chen Chunhua made a quick decision and ran down the river bank while shouting to Aunt Wang to grab the cotton jacket on her back and not let go, and then handed over the long stick in her hand.

The stick is used to bolt the door. It is long and strong enough.

Niu Niu is the captain's second son, seven years old this year. He's usually a good swimmer, but he couldn't swim because he was frightened or had a cramp. But now, a long stick was about to be stuck in his mouth, and he instinctively grabbed it tightly.

"Hold on tight! Don't let go!"

When Lin Guoqing and his group of men hurried over, they saw Chen Chunhua and Aunt Wang dragging Lin Erniu out of the river like a tug-of-war.

Winter clothes become heavier once they absorb water. The wooden stick itself is heavy and has been oiled, so it is very slippery when it gets wet. Chen Chunhua felt several times that Erniu was about to slip out of her hands.

The men rushed forward to help, especially Chen Jinshui, who was the first to jump into the water, grabbed the child's cotton coat and pulled him up.

The wooden stick was thrown aside, and Lin Erniu lay on the shore with a bloated belly, feeling that he was breathing out more than breathing in.

How do you do that "something" maneuver? Is it pressing the stomach? Chen Chunhua later recalled the Heimlich maneuver she'd seen on a short video app. She hadn't really paid attention when she watched it, and when the critical moment came, she couldn't remember it at all!

Chen Chunhua gave up on the damn scientific method and finally decided to follow her own folk remedies. Staying alive is the most important thing.

She pulled Lin Erniu up, stood behind him, put her hands around his stomach, lifted him up, and then pressed down hard on his stomach.

After three or five times, Erniu violently vomited out several puddles of water and coughed desperately.

"I survived, I survived..."

Niu Niu's father, team leader Lin Fuqiang's legs went weak and he collapsed to the ground. The man, who was in his early fifties, almost burst into tears.

He had just been in the fields, and when he first heard the children crying, he didn't pay much attention, thinking someone was bullying someone else. He was a little unhappy when the men in the fields rushed out, thinking they were just trying to slack off. It was normal for children to fight and quarrel!

It wasn't until a child came running back crying, shouting that Niu Niu had fallen into the water, that he started to panic. When he ran over, he saw his second cow being dragged ashore and lying motionless on the embankment.

He thought it was over, his only son was gone.

Fortunately... Fortunately...

"You guys are all gathered here putting on a big show! You don't want to work anymore!"

Ma Fengjuan's voice came closer from afar. She was so angry that she didn't even notice her husband and son surrounded by the crowd. She just knew that these lazy men and women were about to rebel.

"Deduct work points! Deduct work points from everyone!" she shouted. "Are Chen Chunhua and Wang Jingui in here too? You two are leading the charge in slacking off, so deduct one point each!"

But for some reason, her words did not attract the usual complaints. Everyone looked at her very quietly, with a hint of strangeness in their eyes.

Ma Fengjuan wasn't very good at reading expressions, and she always thought others looked at her, so she spat again, "What are you looking at? If you look at me again, I'll have your team leader deduct points from you!"

Faintly, she seemed to hear someone say, "...the child fell into the water..."

"A child fell into the water, so what? Is he dead? It's not a big deal if he's not dead. Whose child is so precious? We grow collective food...Ah!!!"

Lin Fuqiang, who had just survived the disaster by holding his son, now struggled to get up, pushed through the crowd and rushed out to slap his wife.

"Your son fell into the water! He almost died, did you know that? How do you even think about your child?"

Lin Fuqiang roared, his head almost smoking with anger. He knew that his wife was a little shrewd outside, but those were trivial matters. He never expected that she could be so cold-blooded and mean in such a matter of life and death.

The main thing is that the life was his own son's, which made him even more angry.

Ma Fengjuan was stunned by the slap. She covered her face and looked at her son who was still sitting crookedly on the ground. There was a hint of crying in her tone.

"I...I don't know...I'm working too..."

Chen Chunhua was now considered the captain's family's savior. She stood very straight, brushed off the water stains on her body, and lightly added some firewood.

"Captain Ma has always been conscientious in his work, and the deductions are all justified. Jingui and I were absent from duty, and I accept the consequences."

Lin Fuqiang got even angrier when he heard this.

"If it weren't for Chen Chunhua and Wang Jingui, you'd be burning paper money for Erniu right now! Deduct points, deduct points! All you do every day is deduct points! You can't even take care of a child, let alone a small team! You'd better not give me this job!"
