Chapter 27: Our family is not poor, why can't we be more particular?

While Chen Chunhua was cooking, Lin Guoqing recounted his experience from last night. When she heard that the snake had been sold for three dollars and sixteen cents, she felt a surge of excitement. She wondered if she could also encounter a snake tonight...

Oh, forget it, this job is not suitable for me. I don’t want to get bitten by a snake today, and Lin Guoqing will marry a new wife tomorrow.

If you have a stepmother, you will have a stepfather. It is not worth it to leave four children helpless.

On the contrary, when she heard Lin Guoqing say that Lao Shi could earn 12 yuan with a bicycle ticket, her heart was not moved at all. She grabbed Lin Guoqing and whispered,

"Those who resell tickets really have their heads hanging on their belts. Don't be greedy for this money! Just make a little money selling vegetables!"

Lin Guoqing knew it, "I think so too. I'm telling you this so you can remember it!"

He even thought that his wife was braver than him. If she hadn't urged him to sell vegetables, he wouldn't have known that there were people who could earn more than ten yuan a night!

Of course, it is because of going there that their family can earn these four dollars and fifty-nine cents, right?

"Even without the snake, I made less than 1.5 yuan just from selling vegetables tonight. If I were to earn that much in a month, wouldn't it be around 40 or so?"

Lin Guoqing was counting the money, spinning excitedly behind his wife. The more he calculated, the brighter his eyes became. Forty-odd, that was the annual work points earned by him and Shen Chunhua combined!

"That's over 500 yuan a year! We can really eat 7 eggs a day! When the third and fourth children grow up, we can even become a millionaire?"

Chen Chunhua was touched by his silly look and scolded him with a smile.

"Look at you, you're such a loser! Are you satisfied with just 7 eggs for every meal? You have to wait until your third and fourth children grow up before you can become a millionaire? Then your sons probably won't even be able to find wives!"

Lin Guoqing was still excited and didn't even think of asking Chen Chunhua why the son of a millionaire couldn't get married. He only knew that tonight's dinner was already in the pot.

In the past, the Lin family would have at most two dishes for a meal, and they were all vegetarian, except during festivals when they would have some oily food. For six or seven people, it would be gone in just a few chopsticks.

Today, Chen Chunhua cooked three dishes at once. One was the seven eggs she promised the children every day, and the other two were the ones she promised Liang Shengdi.

One bowl was scrambled eggs with chives. Lin Guoqing had left over a bunch of chives from selling them in the early morning, so she chopped them up and scrambled them with eggs. The chives were supposed to be the main ingredient, but because of the seven eggs, they were reduced to a side dish.

One bowl was the fried meat with mushrooms that Liang Shengdi specifically requested. There was not much meat to begin with, so Chen Chunhua carefully cut the one pound of pork belly into fat and lean meat. The fat was used to make oil, and the lard residue was mixed with the remaining lean meat, and they were fried with some mushrooms that were a little more intact than those in the egg drop soup.

There is no need to wash the pot that has just been used to boil lard. Just put the mushrooms and meat in directly. The freshness of the mushrooms and the aroma of the meat will hit you in the face.

The last bowl is shiny braised bamboo shoots in oil. After the spring bamboo shoots are peeled and washed, the old roots are cut off. A light tap with the back of a knife will crack the bamboo shoots, and then they are cut into thin strips.

Add the lard you just cooked to the pot—a generous amount, more than you normally use for stir-frying. When the oil is 60% hot, add the bamboo shoots and stir-fry until they're slightly charred. Then, add the seasonings: sugar, rice wine, soy sauce, whatever you like. Finally, once the bamboo shoots are fully colored, cover the pot and simmer until the sauce thickens. Garnish with chopped green onions and serve.

The overbearing aroma of bamboo shoots couldn't even cover up the meat! The old man and four children who had just been kicked out of the kitchen by Lin Guoqing couldn't sit still anymore. They rushed from the room, the chicken coop, and the yard to look at the kitchen door.

"Mom, my brother and I found the eggs."

Lin Shugan had a few excuses, carefully carrying a bag of eggs in his shirt, and went back into the kitchen. Lin Shuchao followed behind him, holding two eggs in his hands, and an unknown liquid leaking from the corner of his mouth. He would occasionally raise his sleeve to wipe it.

Chen Chunhua's eyes twitched as she watched. She asked Lin Guoqing to serve the dishes, then took out a tin box for eggs and put all the eggs that the second and third brothers had brought back today into it.

"The chickens today are pretty good, they laid 10 eggs!" Chen Chunhua was in a good mood. After putting the tin box away, she grabbed the back of the two boys' collars and dragged them to the side of the water tank. She picked up the gourd ladle and scooped out a spoonful of water.

"Wash your hands! Wash them thoroughly before you can eat! Third daughter, stop wiping your mouth with your sleeves. I can see the chicken shit on your sleeves!" He then called his two daughters to wash their hands as well.

"Mom, you should wash yourself too. You've been digging mud in the mountains all day, and your hands are really dirty!"

Liang Shengdi was in a hurry to eat. She had already picked up her own bowl and was just about to serve the rice. But then she was asked by her wife to wash her hands?

"I'm not dirty! I just wiped it!" She meant rubbing it on her clothes.

Chen Chunhua was not willing to let her go so easily. After the children had finished washing, she took the ladle and walked up to the old lady to stop her. "Wash your hands before eating. This is basic personal hygiene!"

The old lady clicked her tongue and looked at the three dishes that were already on the table. She quickly put down her bowl and chopsticks, dipped her hands in the gourd ladle, dipped them in water and hurriedly took them out, but was held down by Chen Chunhua again.

"Hey, are you washing your hands or touching the water? Look at the mud in the cracks of your nails, they are dirtier than the third brother's!" As he said this, he held the ladle in one hand and directly pinched Liang Shengdi's hand with the other hand and rubbed it in the water.

Liang Shengdi was so anxious, but she couldn't let her daughter-in-law off the hook because she had to eat tomorrow!

"That's almost it. Why haven't I seen you ask me to wash my hands before?"

"Your hands used to be so dirty you wouldn't even touch grass, let alone mud. What's there to wash?"

Lin Guoqing reached out and took away the bowl of rice that Liang Shengdi had put aside, and filled her with a full bowl of rice with two small pieces of potatoes in it.

He prepared the rice today, so there is definitely enough of it. Eat it, everyone in his family will have enough to eat from now on.

After finally washing her hands, Liang Shengdi was about to wipe them on her clothes out of habit when she was stopped by Chen Chunhua who said "Hey hey hey". Chen Chunhua pulled a towel over and said, "I'll hang this one over here, specially for wiping your hands. Your clothes have just been rubbed with mud, so it would be a waste if you wipe them again."

Liang Shengdi muttered something about being too picky, and was finally allowed to eat. She ran back to her seat with her bowl in her arms, picked up her chopsticks and took a bite of the bamboo shoots.

This smells so good!!!

Seeing his mother's childish look, Lin Guoqing was convinced and whispered to Chen Chunhua with a smile,

"We are not poor, why can't we be more particular?"
